1 My son, when you come to serve the LORD, prepare yourself for trials.	1 Figlio, se ti accosti al servizio del Signore disponi la tua anima alla prova;
2 Be sincere of heart and steadfast, undisturbed in time of adversity.	2 abbi un cuore retto, sii costante e non turbarti sotto la prova.
3 Cling to him, forsake him not; thus will your future be great.	3 Tieniti unito a lui intimamente e non separartene, perché tu ne resti avvantaggiato in seguito.
4 Accept whatever befalls you, in crushing misfortune be patient;	4 Ricevi quanto ti invierà e sii longanime nelle vicissitudini delle tue afflizioni,
5 For in fire gold is tested, and worthy men in the crucible of humiliation.	5 poiché l’oro viene provato con il fuoco, e gli uomini graditi nella fornace della umiliazione.
6 Trust God and he will help you; make straight your ways and hope in him.	6 Affidati a lui e ti prenderà in tutela, segui la retta via e spera in lui,
7 You who fear the LORD, wait for his mercy, turn not away lest you fall.	7 Voi che temete il Signore, aspettate la misericordia, non venite meno se non volete cadere.
8 You who fear the LORD, trust him, and your reward will not be lost.	8 Voi che temete il Signore, abbiate fiducia in lui e la vostra ricompensa non verrà meno,
9 You who fear the LORD, hope for good things, for lasting joy and mercy.	9 Voi che temete il Signore, sperate cose migliori: l’interminabile gioia e la misericordia,
10 Study the generations long past and understand; has anyone hoped in the LORD and been disappointed? Has anyone persevered in his fear and been forsaken? has anyone called upon him and been rebuffed?	10 Osservate le generazioni passate e fate attenzione: chi si è affidato al Signore e ne è rimasto deluso? chi ha perseverato nel timore di lui ed è stato abbandonato? chi lo ha invocato ed è stato da lui ignorato?
11 Compassionate and merciful is the LORD; he forgives sins, he saves in time of trouble.	11 Perché il Signore è pietoso e misericordioso; rimette i peccati e salva in tempo di sventura!
12 Woe to craven hearts and drooping hands, to the sinner who treads a double path!	12 Guai ai cuori codardi e alle mani inerti e al peccatore che cammina su due sentieri!
13 Woe to the faint of heart who trust not, who therefore will have no shelter!	13 Guai al cuore abbattuto perché non crede: perciò sarà privo di protezione!
14 Woe to you who have lost hope! what will you do at the visitation of the LORD?	14 Guai a voi che avete perduto la pazienza; che farete quando il Signore vi visiterà?
15 Those who fear the LORD disobey not his words; those who love him keep his ways.	15 Chi teme il Signore non diffida delle sue parole; chi lo ama ne segue il cammino.
16 Those who fear the LORD seek to please him, those who love him are filled with his law.	16 Chi teme il Signore si sforza di piacergli e chi lo ama si sazia della legge.
17 Those who fear the LORD prepare their hearts and humble themselves before him.	17 Chi teme il Signore dispone il cuore e umilia la sua anima innanzi a lui.
18 Let us fall into the hands of the LORD and not into the hands of men, For equal to his majesty is the mercy that he shows.	18 Gettiamoci nelle braccia del Signore e non nelle braccia degli uomini, poiché come è la sua grandezza così anche è la sua misericordia.
