Sirach 19

1 He who does so grows no richer; he who wastes the little he has will be stripped bare.	1 Chi sgobba ma s'ubriaca non arricchisce, e chi disprezza le piccole perdite presto va in rovina.
2 Wine and women make the mind giddy, and the companion of harlots becomes reckless.	2 Il vino e le donne fanno perdere il senno, ma è più pericoloso bazzicare le prostitute.
3 Rottenness and worms will possess him, for contumacious desire destroys its owner.	3 Putredine e vermi saranno la sua sorte, l'uomo senza scrupoli sarà spiantato.
4 He who lightly trusts in them has no sense, and he who strays after them sins against his own life.	4 Chi si fida troppo presto è di cuore leggero, e chi fa il peccato sbaglia a suo danno.
5 He who gloats over evil will meet with evil, and he who repeats an evil report has no sense.	5 Chi si rallegra nel male sarà condannato,
6 Never repeat gossip, and you will not be reviled.	6 e chi odia le chiacchiere evita tanti guai.
7 Tell nothing to friend or foe; if you have a fault, reveal it not,	7 Non ripetere la parola udita, così non avrai mai danno.
8 For he who hears it will hold it against you, and in time become your enemy.	8 Non propagare le cose dell'amico o del nemico, parla solo se il silenzio diventa complicità.
9 Let anything you hear die within you; be assured it will not make you burst.	9 Venutolo a sapere, l'altro starà guardingo con te, e quando avrà l'occasione te la farà pagare.
10 When a fool hears something, he is in labor, like a woman giving birth to a child.	10 Se hai sentito una parola, essa muoia con te; sta' tranquillo che non ti scoppierà dentro.
11 Like an arrow lodged in a man's thigh is gossip in the breast of a fool.	11 Di fronte a un segreto lo stolto ha le doglie, come una donna al momento del parto.
12 Admonish your friend--he may not have done it; and if he did, that he may not do it again.	12 Come freccia conficcata nella carne è il segreto nel petto dello stolto.
13 Admonish your neighbor--he may not have said it; and if he did, that he may not say it again.	13 Con l'amico, verifica la dicerìa sul suo conto, se fosse vera, non continuerà a sbagliare.
14 Admonish your friend--often it may be slander; every story you must not believe.	14 Tratta con l'interessato quanto gli si attribuisce, così, se l'ha detto, non lo ripeterà.
15 Then, too, a man can slip and not mean it; who has not sinned with his tongue?	15 Appura con l'amico quello che spesso è una calunnia, e non credere a tutto quello che senti.
16 Admonish your neighbor before you break with him; thus will you fulfill the law of the Most High.	16 Si può scivolare, ma senza volerlo, e chi non ha sbagliato con la lingua?
17 All wisdom is fear of the LORD; perfect wisdom is the fulfillment of the law.	17 Richiama il tuo vicino, prima di minacciarlo, così osserverai la legge dell'Altissimo.
18 The knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom, nor is there prudence in the counsel of sinners.	18 Tutta la sapienza è timore del Signore, e in ogni sapienza c'è la pratica della legge.
19 There is a shrewdness that is detestable, while the simple man may be free from sin.	19 La conoscenza del male non è sapienza, e non c'è senno nel consiglio dei peccatori.
20 There are those with little understanding who fear God, and those of great intelligence who violate the law.	20 C'è un'astuzia che è abominevole e chi manca di sapienza è un dissennato.
21 There is a shrewdness keen but dishonest, which by duplicity wins a judgment.	21 E' meglio il timore del Signore con poca intelligenza che l'eccellere della mente con l'offesa della legge.
22 There is the wicked man who is bowed in grief, but is full of guile within;	22 C'è un'astuzia cavillosa e quindi ingiusta, e c'è chi imbroglia ma per ottenere la sentenza giusta.
23 He bows his head and feigns not to hear, but when not observed, he will take advantage of you:	23 C'è il malvagio che si mostra piegato dall'afflizione mentre dentro è pieno di menzogna;
24 Even though his lack of strength keeps him from sinning, when he finds the opportunity, he will do harm.	24 fingendosi sordo e con la testa bassa, quando non è visto ti scavalcherà;
25 One can tell a man by his appearance; a wise man is known as such when first met.	25 se non ti nuoce per mancanza di forza, alla prima occasione ti farà del male.
26 A man's attire, his hearty laughter and his gait, proclaim him for what he is.	26 L'uomo si può riconoscere a prima vista, e chi è saggio da come si presenta.
	27 L'abbigliamento, il sorriso dei denti, il modo d'incedere rivelano il suo tipo.
