NEW AMERICAN BIBLEDOUAI-RHEIMS
He who does so grows no richer; he who wastes the little he has will be stripped bare.1 Hast thou heard a word against thy neighbour? let it die within thee, trusting that it will not burst thee.
Wine and women make the mind giddy, and the companion of harlots becomes reckless.2 dummy verses inserted by amos
Rottenness and worms will possess him, for contumacious desire destroys its owner.3 dummy verses inserted by amos
He who lightly trusts in them has no sense, and he who strays after them sins against his own life.4 dummy verses inserted by amos
He who gloats over evil will meet with evil, and he who repeats an evil report has no sense.5 dummy verses inserted by amos
Never repeat gossip, and you will not be reviled.6 dummy verses inserted by amos
Tell nothing to friend or foe; if you have a fault, reveal it not,7 dummy verses inserted by amos
For he who hears it will hold it against you, and in time become your enemy.8 dummy verses inserted by amos
Let anything you hear die within you; be assured it will not make you burst.9 dummy verses inserted by amos
When a fool hears something, he is in labor, like a woman giving birth to a child.10 dummy verses inserted by amos
Like an arrow lodged in a man's thigh is gossip in the breast of a fool.11 At the hearing of a word the fool is in travail, as a woman groaning. in the bringing forth a child.
Admonish your friend--he may not have done it; and if he did, that he may not do it again.12 As an arrow that sticketh in a man's thigh: so is a word in the heart of a fool.
Admonish your neighbor--he may not have said it; and if he did, that he may not say it again.13 Reprove a friend, lest he may not have understood, and say : f did it not: or if he did it, that he may do it no more.
Admonish your friend--often it may be slander; every story you must not believe.14 Reprove thy neighbour, for it may be he hath not said it: and if he hath said it, that he may not say it again.
Then, too, a man can slip and not mean it; who has not sinned with his tongue?15 Admonish thy friend: for there is often a fault committed.
Admonish your neighbor before you break with him; thus will you fulfill the law of the Most High.16 And believe not every word. There is one, that slippeth with the tongue, but not from his heart.
All wisdom is fear of the LORD; perfect wisdom is the fulfillment of the law.17 For who is there that hath not offended with his tongue? Admonish thy neighbour before thou threaten him.
The knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom, nor is there prudence in the counsel of sinners.18 And give place to the fear of the most High: for the fear of God is all wisdom, and therein is to fear God, and the disposition of the law is in all wisdom.
There is a shrewdness that is detestable, while the simple man may be free from sin.19 But the learning of wickedness is not wisdom: and the device of sinners is not prudence.
There are those with little understanding who fear God, and those of great intelligence who violate the law.20 There is a subtle wickedness, and the same is detestable: and there is a man that is foolish, wanting in wisdom.
There is a shrewdness keen but dishonest, which by duplicity wins a judgment.21 Better is a man that hath less wisdom, and wanteth understanding, with the fear of God, than he that aboundeth in understanding, and transgresseth the law of the most High.
There is the wicked man who is bowed in grief, but is full of guile within;22 There is an exquisite subtilty, and the same is unjust.
He bows his head and feigns not to hear, but when not observed, he will take advantage of you:23 And there is one that uttereth an exact word telling the truth. There is one that humbleth himself wickedly, and his interior is full of deceit:
Even though his lack of strength keeps him from sinning, when he finds the opportunity, he will do harm.24 And there is one that submitteth himself exceedingly with a great lowliness: and there is one that casteth down his countenance, and maketh as if he did not see that which is unknown:
One can tell a man by his appearance; a wise man is known as such when first met.25 And if he be hindered from sinning for want of power, if he shall find opportunity to do evil, he will do it.
A man's attire, his hearty laughter and his gait, proclaim him for what he is.26 A man is known by his look, and a wise man, when thou meetest him, is known by his countenance.
The attire of the body, and the laughter of the teeth, and the gait of the man, shew what he is.
There is a lying rebuke in the anger of an injurious man: and there is a judgment that is not allowed to be good: and there is one that holdeth his peace, he is wise.
