Sirach 19

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 He who does so grows no richer; he who wastes the little he has will be stripped bare.	1 Un ouvrier buveur ne sera jamais riche, qui méprise les riens peu à peu s'appauvrit.
2 Wine and women make the mind giddy, and the companion of harlots becomes reckless.	2 Le vin et les femmes pervertissent les hommes sensés, qui fréquente les prostituées perdtoute pudeur.
3 Rottenness and worms will possess him, for contumacious desire destroys its owner.	3 Des larves et des vers il sera la proie et l'homme téméraire y perdra la vie.
4 He who lightly trusts in them has no sense, and he who strays after them sins against his own life.	4 Celui qui a la confiance facile montre sa légèreté, celui qui pèche se fait tort à soi-même.
5 He who gloats over evil will meet with evil, and he who repeats an evil report has no sense.	5 Celui qui prend plaisir au mal sera condamné,
6 Never repeat gossip, and you will not be reviled.	6 celui qui hait le bavardage échappe au mal.
7 Tell nothing to friend or foe; if you have a fault, reveal it not,	7 Ne rapporte jamais ce qu'on t'a dit et jamais on ne te nuira;
8 For he who hears it will hold it against you, and in time become your enemy.	8 à ton ami comme à ton ennemi ne raconte rien, à moins qu'il n'y ait faute pour toi, ne lerévèle pas;
9 Let anything you hear die within you; be assured it will not make you burst.	9 on t'écouterait, on se méfierait de toi et à l'occasion on te haïrait.
10 When a fool hears something, he is in labor, like a woman giving birth to a child.	10 As-tu entendu quelque chose? Sois un tombeau. Courage! tu n'en éclateras pas!
11 Like an arrow lodged in a man's thigh is gossip in the breast of a fool.	11 Une parole entendue, et voilà le sot en travail comme la femme en mal d'enfant.
12 Admonish your friend--he may not have done it; and if he did, that he may not do it again.	12 Une flèche plantée dans la cuisse, telle est une parole dans le ventre du sot.
13 Admonish your neighbor--he may not have said it; and if he did, that he may not say it again.	13 Va trouver ton ami: peut-être n'a-t-il rien fait, et s'il a fait quelque chose il nerecommencera pas.
14 Admonish your friend--often it may be slander; every story you must not believe.	14 Va trouver ton voisin: peut-être n'a-t-il rien dit, et s'il a dit quelque chose il ne le redira pas.
15 Then, too, a man can slip and not mean it; who has not sinned with his tongue?	15 Va trouver ton ami, car on calomnie souvent, ne crois pas tout ce qu'on te dit.
16 Admonish your neighbor before you break with him; thus will you fulfill the law of the Most High.	16 Souvent on glisse sans mauvaise intention; qui n'a jamais péché en parole?
17 All wisdom is fear of the LORD; perfect wisdom is the fulfillment of the law.	17 Va trouver ton voisin avant d'en venir aux menaces, obéis à la loi du Très-Haut.
18 The knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom, nor is there prudence in the counsel of sinners.
19 There is a shrewdness that is detestable, while the simple man may be free from sin.
20 There are those with little understanding who fear God, and those of great intelligence who violate the law.	20 Toute sagesse est crainte du Seigneur et en toute sagesse il y a l'accomplissement de la loi.
21 There is a shrewdness keen but dishonest, which by duplicity wins a judgment.
22 There is the wicked man who is bowed in grief, but is full of guile within;	22 Mais connaître le mal n'est pas la sagesse et le conseil des pécheurs n'est pas la prudence.
23 He bows his head and feigns not to hear, but when not observed, he will take advantage of you:	23 Il y a un savoir-faire qui est abominable; est insensé celui à qui manque la sagesse.
24 Even though his lack of strength keeps him from sinning, when he finds the opportunity, he will do harm.	24 Mieux vaut être pauvre d'intelligence avec la crainte que surabonder de prudence et violerla loi.
25 One can tell a man by his appearance; a wise man is known as such when first met.	25 Il y a un habile savoir-faire au service de l'injustice et tel pour établir son droit use defourberie.
26 A man's attire, his hearty laughter and his gait, proclaim him for what he is.	26 Tel marche courbé sous le chagrin mais au fond de lui ce n'est que ruse:
	27 baissant la tête et faisant le sourd, s'il n'est pas démasqué il prend l'avantage sur toi.
