Sirach 19

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	NOVA VULGATA
1 He who does so grows no richer; he who wastes the little he has will be stripped bare.	1 Operarius ebriosus non locupletabitur; et, qui spernit modica, paulatim decidet.
2 Wine and women make the mind giddy, and the companion of harlots becomes reckless.	2 Vinum et mulieres apostatare faciunt sensatos; et, qui se iungit fornicariis, peribit: putredo et vermes hereditabunt illum.
3 Rottenness and worms will possess him, for contumacious desire destroys its owner.	3 Anima audax perdet dominum suum; et tolletur de numero anima eius, et extolletur in exemplum maius.
4 He who lightly trusts in them has no sense, and he who strays after them sins against his own life.	4 Qui credit cito, levis corde est et minorabitur; et, qui delinquit in animam suam, quis innoxium faciet?
5 He who gloats over evil will meet with evil, and he who repeats an evil report has no sense.	5 Qui gaudet iniquitate, denotabitur, et, qui odit correptionem, minuetur vita, et, qui odit loquacitatem, exstinguit malitiam.
6 Never repeat gossip, and you will not be reviled.	6
7 Tell nothing to friend or foe; if you have a fault, reveal it not,	7 Ne umquam iteres verbum nequam et durum et prorsus non minoraberis.
8 For he who hears it will hold it against you, and in time become your enemy.	8 De amico et inimico noli narrare et, si notum est tibi delictum, noli denudare:
9 Let anything you hear die within you; be assured it will not make you burst.	9 audiet enim te et cavebit te et quasi defendens peccatum odiet te.
10 When a fool hears something, he is in labor, like a woman giving birth to a child.	10 Audisti verbum adversus proximum tuum? Commoriatur in te fidens quoniam non te dirumpet.
11 Like an arrow lodged in a man's thigh is gossip in the breast of a fool.	11 A facie verbi parturiet fatuus tamquam parturiens a facie infantis;
12 Admonish your friend--he may not have done it; and if he did, that he may not do it again.	12 sagitta infixa femori carnis, sic verbum in corde stulti.
13 Admonish your neighbor--he may not have said it; and if he did, that he may not say it again.	13 Corripe amicum, ne forte fecerit malum et ipse dicat: “ Non feci ”; aut, si fecerit, ne iterum addat facere.
14 Admonish your friend--often it may be slander; every story you must not believe.	14 Corripe proximum, ne forte dixerit et, si dixerit, ne forte iteret.
15 Then, too, a man can slip and not mean it; who has not sinned with his tongue?	15 Corripe amicum, saepe enim fit criminatio,
16 Admonish your neighbor before you break with him; thus will you fulfill the law of the Most High.	16 et non omni verbo credas. Est qui labitur lingua sed non ex animo;
17 All wisdom is fear of the LORD; perfect wisdom is the fulfillment of the law.	17 quis est enim qui non deliquerit in lingua sua? Corripe proximum, antequam commineris,
18 The knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom, nor is there prudence in the counsel of sinners.	18 et da locum legi Altissimi. Quia omnis sapientia timor Dei et in illa timere Deum, et in omni sapientia dispositio legis.
19 There is a shrewdness that is detestable, while the simple man may be free from sin.	19 Et non est sapientia nequitiae scientia, et non est consilium peccatorum prudentia.
20 There are those with little understanding who fear God, and those of great intelligence who violate the law.	20 Est astutia et ipsa exsecratio, et est insipiens, qui minuitur sapientia.
21 There is a shrewdness keen but dishonest, which by duplicity wins a judgment.	21 Melior est homo, qui minuitur sapientia et deficiens sensu in timore, quam qui abundat sensu et transgreditur legem Altissimi.
22 There is the wicked man who is bowed in grief, but is full of guile within;	22 Est solertia certa et ipsa iniqua.
23 He bows his head and feigns not to hear, but when not observed, he will take advantage of you:	23 Et est qui pervertit gratiam, ut proferat iudicium; est qui videtur oppressus et fractus animo, et interiora eius plena sunt dolo.
24 Even though his lack of strength keeps him from sinning, when he finds the opportunity, he will do harm.	24 Et est qui se nimium submittit a multa humilitate; et est qui inclinat faciem suam et fingit se non audire: ubi ignoratus est, praeveniet te.
25 One can tell a man by his appearance; a wise man is known as such when first met.	25 Et, si ab imbecillitate virium vetetur peccare, si invenerit tempus malefaciendi, malefaciet.
26 A man's attire, his hearty laughter and his gait, proclaim him for what he is.	26 Ex visu cognoscitur vir, et ab occursu faciei cognoscitur sensatus:
	27 amictus corporis et risus dentium et gressus hominis enuntiant de illo.
	28 Est correptio inopportuna, et est indicium, quod non probatur esse bonum; et est tacens, et ipse est prudens.
