Sirach 17

1 The LORD from the earth created man, and in his own image he made him.	1 Il Signore creò l'uomo dalla terra e ad essa lo fa tornare di nuovo.
2 Limited days of life he gives him and makes him return to earth again.	2 Egli assegnò agli uomini giorni contati e un tempo fissato, diede loro il dominio di quanto è sulla terra.
3 He endows man with a strength of his own, and with power over all things else on earth.	3 Secondo la sua natura li rivestì di forza, e a sua immagine li formò.
4 He puts the fear of him in all flesh, and gives him rule over beasts and birds.	4 Egli infuse in ogni essere vivente il timore dell'uomo, perché l'uomo dominasse sulle bestie e sugli uccelli.
5 He forms men's tongues and eyes and ears, and imparts to them an understanding heart.	5 Discernimento, lingua, occhi, orecchi e cuore diede loro perché ragionassero.
6 With wisdom and knowledge he fills them; good and evil he shows them.	6 Li riempì di dottrina e d'intelligenza, e indicò loro anche il bene e il male.
7 He looks with favor upon their hearts, and shows them his glorious works,	7 Pose lo sguardo nei loro cuori per mostrar loro la grandezza delle sue opere.
8 That they may describe the wonders of his deeds and praise his holy name.	8 Loderanno il suo santo nome per narrare la grandezza delle sue opere.
9 He has set before them knowledge, a law of life as their inheritance;	9 Inoltre pose davanti a loro la scienza e diede loro in eredità la legge della vita.
10 An everlasting covenant he has made with them, his commandments he has revealed to them.	10 Stabilì con loro un'alleanza eterna e fece loro conoscere i suoi decreti.
11 His majestic glory their eyes beheld, his glorious voice their ears heard.	11 I loro occhi contemplarono la grandezza della sua gloria, i loro orecchi sentirono la magnificenza della sua voce.
12 He says to them, "Avoid all evil"; each of them he gives precepts about his fellow men.	12 Disse loro: "Guardatevi da ogni ingiustizia!" e diede a ciascuno precetti verso il prossimo.
13 Their ways are ever known to him, they cannot be hidden from his eyes.	13 Le loro vie sono sempre davanti a lui, non restano nascoste ai suoi occhi.
14 Over every nation he places a ruler, but the LORD'S own portion is Israel.	14 Su ogni popolo mise un capo, ma Israele è la porzione del Signore.
15 All their actions are clear as the sun to him, his eyes are ever upon their ways.	15 Tutte le loro opere sono davanti a lui come il sole, i suoi occhi osservano sempre la loro condotta.
16 Their wickedness cannot be hidden from him; all of their sins are before the LORD.	16 A lui non sono nascoste le loro ingiustizie, tutti i loro peccati sono davanti al Signore.
17 A man's goodness God cherishes like a signet ring, a man's virtue, like the apple of his eye.	17 La beneficenza dell'uomo è per lui come un sigillo, egli serberà la generosità come la propria pupilla.
18 Later he will rise up and repay them, and requite each one of them as they deserve.	18 Alla fine si leverà e renderà loro la ricompensa, riverserà su di loro il contraccambio.
19 But to the penitent he provides a way back, he encourages those who are losing hope!	19 Ma a chi si pente egli offre il ritorno, consola quanti vengono meno nella pazienza.
20 Return to the LORD and give up sin, pray to him and make your offenses few.	20 Ritorna al Signore e cessa di peccare, prega davanti a lui e cessa di offendere.
21 Turn again to the Most High and away from sin, hate intensely what he loathes;	21 Fa' ritorno all'Altissimo e volta le spalle all'ingiustizia; detesta interamente l'iniquità.
22 Who in the nether world can glorify the Most High in place of the living who offer their praise?	22 Negli inferi infatti chi loderà l'Altissimo, al posto dei viventi e di quanti gli rendono lode?
23 No more can the dead give praise than those who have never lived; they glorify the LORD who are alive and well.	23 Da un morto, che non è più, la riconoscenza si perde, chi è vivo e sano loda il Signore.
24 How great the mercy of the LORD, his forgiveness of those who return to him!	24 Quanto è grande la misericordia del Signore, il suo perdono per quanti si convertono a lui!
25 The like cannot be found in men, for not immortal is any son of man.	25 L'uomo non può avere tutto, poiché un figlio dell'uomo non è immortale.
26 Is anything brighter than the sun? Yet it can be eclipsed. How obscure then the thoughts of flesh and blood!	26 Che c'è di più luminoso del sole? Anch'esso scompare. Così carne e sangue pensano al male.
27 God watches over the hosts of highest heaven, while all men are dust and ashes.	27 Esso sorveglia le schiere dell'alto cielo, ma gli uomini sono tutti terra e cenere.
