Sirach 10

1 A wise magistrate lends stability to his people, and the government of a prudent man is well ordered.	1 Il giudice saggio disciplina il suo popolo, il governo d'un saggio sarà ordinato.
2 As the people's judge, so are his ministers; as the head of a city, its inhabitants.	2 Quale il giudice del popolo tali i suoi ministri, gli abitanti della città somigliano a chi la governa.
3 A wanton king destroys his people, but a city grows through the wisdom of its princes.	3 Il re sregolato rovina il suo popolo, e la saggezza dei potenti edifica la città.
4 Sovereignty over the earth is in the hand of God, who raises up on it the man of the hour;	4 Il governo del mondo è in mano al Signore, ad esso destina, a suo tempo, l'uomo adatto.
5 Sovereignty over every man is in the hand of God, who imparts his majesty to the ruler.	5 Nella mano del Signore è il successo dell'uomo, è lui che dona allo scriba la sua gloria.
6 No matter the wrong, do no violence to your neighbor, and do not walk the path of arrogance.	6 Non sdegnarti col prossimo nei suoi errori, e non agire mai con tracotanza.
7 Odious to the LORD and to men is arrogance, and the sin of oppression they both hate.	7 L'arroganza spiace a Dio e agli uomini, entrambi odiano l'ingiustizia.
8 Dominion is transferred from one people to another because of the violence of the arrogant.	8 L'impero passa da una nazione all'altra con l'inganno, l'ambizione e la cupidigia.
9 Why are dust and ashes proud? even during life man's body decays;	9 Perché si esalta chi è terra e cenere? Ancora in vita vomita gli intestini.
10 A slight illness--the doctor jests, a king today--tomorrow he is dead.	10 La grave malattia si burla del medico, chi oggi è re domani muore.
11 When a man dies, he inherits corruption; worms and gnats and maggots.	11 Questa è la sorte dell'uomo che muore: serpenti, bestie feroci e vermi.
12 The beginning of pride is man's stubbornness in withdrawing his heart from his Maker;	12 Chi s'allontana da Dio è sulla via dell'arroganza, egli distoglie il cuore dal creatore.
13 For pride is the reservoir of sin, a source which runs over with vice; Because of it God sends unheard-of afflictions and brings men to utter ruin.	13 Perché l'arroganza comincia col peccato, chi n'è colpito emana cose abominevoli; perciò il Signore li punisce con portenti, li sconvolge fino ad annientarli.
14 The thrones of the arrogant God overturns and establishes the lowly in their stead.	14 Il Signore abbatte i prìncipi dai troni per farvi sedere gli uomini miti.
15 The roots of the proud God plucks up, to plant the humble in their place:	15 Il Signore svelle le radici delle nazioni e pianta gli umili al loro posto.
16 He breaks down their stem to the level of the ground, then digs their roots from the earth.	16 Il Signore devasta le terre dei popoli e le distrugge sino alle fondamenta;
17 The traces of the proud God sweeps away and effaces the memory of them from the earth.	17 colpisce certi uomini e li annienta, cancella dalla terra la loro memoria.
18 Insolence is not allotted to a man, nor stubborn anger to one born of woman.	18 L'arroganza non fu creata per gli uomini, né l'ira per i nati di donna.
19 Whose offspring can be in honor? Those of men. Which offspring are in honor? Those who fear God. Whose offspring can be in disgrace? Those of men. Which offspring are in disgrace? Those who transgress the commandments.	19 C'è una specie che merita onore? Gli uomini; c'è una specie che merita onore? Quanti temono il Signore.
20 Among brethren their leader is in honor; he who fears God is in honor among his people.	20 C'è una specie che merita disprezzo? Gli uomini; c'è una specie che merita disprezzo? Quanti vìolano la legge.
21 Be it tenant or wayfarer, alien or pauper, his glory is the fear of the LORD.	21 Tra fratelli ha onore chi comanda, ma agli occhi del Signore quanti lo temono.
22 It is not just to despise a man who is wise but poor, nor proper to honor any sinner.	22 Sia un ricco e un nobile che un povero può vantarsi del timore del Signore.
23 The prince, the ruler, the judge are in honor; but none is greater than he who fears God.	23 Non è giusto disprezzare il povero che ha senno, né conveniente onorare il peccatore.
24 When free men serve a prudent slave, the wise man does not complain.	24 Principe, giudice, potente: anche se onorati, son meno di chi teme il Signore.
25 Flaunt not your wisdom in managing your affairs, and boast not in your time of need.	25 Gli uomini liberi serviranno lo schiavo saggio, e chi ha senno non protesterà.
26 Better the worker who has plenty of everything than the boaster who is without bread.	26 Non far sfoggio di saggezza quando attendi al tuo mestiere, e non sentirti grande quando sei nel bisogno.
27 My son, with humility have self-esteem; prize yourself as you deserve.	27 Val più lavorare e abbondare in tutto che passeggiare con boria e senza pane.
28 Who will acquit him who condemns himself? who will honor him who discredits himself?	28 Figlio, sii modesto ma pensa al tuo onore, fatti valere secondo il tuo merito.
29 The poor man is honored for his wisdom as the rich man is honored for his wealth;	29 Chi riparerà al male che uno fa a se stesso, e chi l'onorerà se egli si disonora?
30 Honored in poverty, how much more so in wealth! Dishonored in wealth, in poverty how much the more!	30 Il povero si farà onore con la saggezza, e il ricco si farà onore con la ricchezza.
	31 L'onore del povero crescerà con la ricchezza, ma il disprezzo del ricco crescerà con la povertà.
