1 A wise magistrate lends stability to his people, and the government of a prudent man is well ordered.	1 A bölcs uralkodó igazságot tesz népének, s az értelmes ember uralma tartós.
2 As the people's judge, so are his ministers; as the head of a city, its inhabitants.	2 Amilyen a nép fejedelme, olyanok tanácsosai, s amilyen a város feje, olyanok a lakói is.
3 A wanton king destroys his people, but a city grows through the wisdom of its princes.	3 A balga király tönkreteszi népét, de népessé lesznek a városok nagyjaik okossága folytán.
4 Sovereignty over the earth is in the hand of God, who raises up on it the man of the hour;	4 Isten kezében van a földkerekség uralma, és rátermett uralkodót rendel fölé idejében.
5 Sovereignty over every man is in the hand of God, who imparts his majesty to the ruler.	5 Az ember sikere Isten kezében van, s a főemberre ő ruházza tekintélyét.
6 No matter the wrong, do no violence to your neighbor, and do not walk the path of arrogance.	6 Ne tartsd eszedben társad semmiféle jogsértését, és ne kövess el semmilyen erőszakot!
7 Odious to the LORD and to men is arrogance, and the sin of oppression they both hate.	7 Isten és emberek előtt gyűlöletes a kevélység, és utálatos a nemzetek minden erőszakossága.
8 Dominion is transferred from one people to another because of the violence of the arrogant.	8 Egyik nemzetről a másikra száll az uralom, igaztalanság, jogsértés, gyalázás és különféle cselvetés miatt.
9 Why are dust and ashes proud? even during life man's body decays;	9 Semmi sem gonoszabb a fukarnál, mert az ilyen még lelkét is áruba bocsátja,
10 A slight illness--the doctor jests, a king today--tomorrow he is dead.	10 Mit kevélykedik a por és hamu? Még életében kihányja belső részeit.
11 When a man dies, he inherits corruption; worms and gnats and maggots.	11 A hosszú betegség terhes az orvosnak, a rövid betegség pedig megvidámítja.
12 The beginning of pride is man's stubbornness in withdrawing his heart from his Maker;	12 Minden hatalmasság rövid életű, s a király, aki ma még van, holnap már halott.
13 For pride is the reservoir of sin, a source which runs over with vice; Because of it God sends unheard-of afflictions and brings men to utter ruin.	13 Ha az ember meghal, csúszó-mászó, rovar és féreg az örökrésze!
14 The thrones of the arrogant God overturns and establishes the lowly in their stead.	14 Az ember gőgjének kezdete az elpártolás Istentől,
15 The roots of the proud God plucks up, to plant the humble in their place:	15 amikor a szíve elfordul Alkotójától. Minden bűn kezdete ugyanis a kevélység, aki ragaszkodik hozzá, betelik átokkal, végül pedig elvész általa.
16 He breaks down their stem to the level of the ground, then digs their roots from the earth.	16 Ezért tette Isten becstelenné a gonoszok gyülekezetét, és rontotta meg őket végképpen.
17 The traces of the proud God sweeps away and effaces the memory of them from the earth.	17 Felforgatta Isten a dölyfös fejedelmek trónját, s a megalázottakat ültette helyükre.
18 Insolence is not allotted to a man, nor stubborn anger to one born of woman.	18 Kiszárította Isten a dölyfös nemzetek gyökerét, s a népek közül a megalázottakat plántálta helyükbe.
19 Whose offspring can be in honor? Those of men. Which offspring are in honor? Those who fear God. Whose offspring can be in disgrace? Those of men. Which offspring are in disgrace? Those who transgress the commandments.	19 Felforgatta az Úr a nemzetek országait, s elpusztította őket fenekestől.
20 Among brethren their leader is in honor; he who fears God is in honor among his people.	20 Némelyeket elsenyvedni engedett, szétszórta őket, és kiirtotta emléküket a földről.
21 Be it tenant or wayfarer, alien or pauper, his glory is the fear of the LORD.	21 Eltörölte Isten a dölyfösök emlékét, de meghagyta az alázatos szívűek emlékezetét.
22 It is not just to despise a man who is wise but poor, nor proper to honor any sinner.	22 Nem született együtt a gőg az emberekkel, sem a harag az asszonyok szülötteivel.
23 The prince, the ruler, the judge are in honor; but none is greater than he who fears God.	23 Becsben áll az istenfélők ivadéka, de gyalázat vár a sarjra, amely megszegi az Úr parancsait.
24 When free men serve a prudent slave, the wise man does not complain.	24 A testvérek közt becsben áll vezérük, s akik félik az Urat, szeme előtt vannak.
25 Flaunt not your wisdom in managing your affairs, and boast not in your time of need.	25 Legyen valaki gazdag, megbecsült vagy szegény, az Úr félelme dicsőségére válik.
26 Better the worker who has plenty of everything than the boaster who is without bread.	26 Ne nézd le az igaz embert, mert szegény, és ne dicsérd a bűnös férfit, mert gazdag!
27 My son, with humility have self-esteem; prize yourself as you deserve.	27 Becsülik az előkelőt, a bírót, a hatalmon levőt, de nincs nagyobb az istenfélőnél.
28 Who will acquit him who condemns himself? who will honor him who discredits himself?	28 Az értelmes szolgának szabadok szolgálnak, az okos, fegyelmezett férfi nem morog, ha megfeddik, a tudatlannak azonban nincs becsülete.
29 The poor man is honored for his wisdom as the rich man is honored for his wealth;	29 Ne fontoskodj, amikor munkádat végzed, és ne nagyzolj nélkülözés közepette!
30 Honored in poverty, how much more so in wealth! Dishonored in wealth, in poverty how much the more!	30 Többet ér, aki dolgozik és bővelkedik mindenben, mint a nagyzoló, akinek még kenyere sincsen.
	31 Tartsd, fiam, lelkedet szerénységben, de becsüld meg érdeme szerint! Ki tartaná igaznak a maga ellen vétőt, és ki becsülné meg azt, aki önmagát gyalázza? A szegényt ügyessége s istenfélelme miatt tisztelik, másokat pedig vagyonukért becsülnek; akit megbecsülnek szegénységében, mennyivel inkább becsülik, ha gazdag! Akit csak a gazdagságáért dicsérnek, az félhet ám a szegénységtől!
