Sirach 10

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 A wise magistrate lends stability to his people, and the government of a prudent man is well ordered.	1 Le sage gouvernant tient son peuple dans la discipline et l'autorité d'un homme sensé estbien établie.
2 As the people's judge, so are his ministers; as the head of a city, its inhabitants.	2 Tel le gouvernant et tels ses subordonnés, tel celui qui régit la ville et tels les habitants.
3 A wanton king destroys his people, but a city grows through the wisdom of its princes.	3 Un roi sans instruction est la ruine de son peuple, une ville doit sa prospérité à l'intelligencedes chefs.
4 Sovereignty over the earth is in the hand of God, who raises up on it the man of the hour;	4 Aux mains du Seigneur est le gouvernement du monde; il suscite au bon moment le chef quiconvient.
5 Sovereignty over every man is in the hand of God, who imparts his majesty to the ruler.	5 Le succès d'un homme est dans la main du Seigneur; c'est lui qui donne au scribe sa gloire.
6 No matter the wrong, do no violence to your neighbor, and do not walk the path of arrogance.	6 Ne garde jamais rancune au prochain, quels que soient ses torts, et ne fais rien dans unmouvement de passion.
7 Odious to the LORD and to men is arrogance, and the sin of oppression they both hate.	7 L'orgueil déplaît à Dieu comme à l'homme et tous deux ont l'injustice en horreur.
8 Dominion is transferred from one people to another because of the violence of the arrogant.	8 La souveraineté passe d'une nation à une autre par l'injustice, la violence et l'argent.
9 Why are dust and ashes proud? even during life man's body decays;	9 Pourquoi tant d'orgueil pour qui est terre et cendre, un être qui, vivant, a déjà les tripesdégoûtantes?
10 A slight illness--the doctor jests, a king today--tomorrow he is dead.	10 Une longue maladie se moque du médecin, qui est roi aujourd'hui demain mourra.
11 When a man dies, he inherits corruption; worms and gnats and maggots.	11 Quand un homme meurt, il reçoit en partage les insectes, les fauves et les vers.
12 The beginning of pride is man's stubbornness in withdrawing his heart from his Maker;	12 Le principe de l'orgueil, c'est d'abandonner le Seigneur et de tenir son coeur éloigné duCréateur.
13 For pride is the reservoir of sin, a source which runs over with vice; Because of it God sends unheard-of afflictions and brings men to utter ruin.	13 Car le principe de l'orgueil c'est le péché, celui qui s'y adonne répand l'abomination. C'estpourquoi le Seigneur lui a infligé d'étranges châtiments et l'a réduit à néant.
14 The thrones of the arrogant God overturns and establishes the lowly in their stead.	14 Le Seigneur a renversé le trône des puissants et fait asseoir à leur place les doux.
15 The roots of the proud God plucks up, to plant the humble in their place:	15 Le Seigneur a déraciné les orgueilleux et planté à leur place les humbles.
16 He breaks down their stem to the level of the ground, then digs their roots from the earth.	16 Le Seigneur a bouleversé le territoire des nations et les a anéanties jusqu'aux fondementsde la terre.
17 The traces of the proud God sweeps away and effaces the memory of them from the earth.	17 Il les a quelquefois enlevées et détruites et a effacé du monde leur souvenir.
18 Insolence is not allotted to a man, nor stubborn anger to one born of woman.	18 L'orgueil n'est pas fait pour l'homme ni la violente colère pour la race de la femme.
19 Whose offspring can be in honor? Those of men. Which offspring are in honor? Those who fear God. Whose offspring can be in disgrace? Those of men. Which offspring are in disgrace? Those who transgress the commandments.	19 Quelle race est digne d'honneur? La race de l'homme. Quelle race est digne d'honneur?Ceux qui craignent le Seigneur. Quelle race est digne de mépris? La race de l'homme. Quelle race est digne demépris? Ceux qui violent la loi.
20 Among brethren their leader is in honor; he who fears God is in honor among his people.	20 Le chef est honoré parmi ses frères, ceux qui craignent le Seigneur sont honorés de lui.
21 Be it tenant or wayfarer, alien or pauper, his glory is the fear of the LORD.
22 It is not just to despise a man who is wise but poor, nor proper to honor any sinner.	22 Riche, chargé d'honneurs ou pauvre, qu'il mette sa fierté dans la crainte du Seigneur.
23 The prince, the ruler, the judge are in honor; but none is greater than he who fears God.	23 Ce n'est pas bien de mépriser un pauvre intelligent, il ne convient pas d'honorer unpécheur.
24 When free men serve a prudent slave, the wise man does not complain.	24 Grand, magistrat, puissant sont dignes d'honneur, mais nul n'est plus grand que celui quicraint le Seigneur.
25 Flaunt not your wisdom in managing your affairs, and boast not in your time of need.	25 L'esclave sage a les hommes libres comme serviteurs et l'homme instruit ne se plaint pas.
26 Better the worker who has plenty of everything than the boaster who is without bread.	26 Ne fais pas le malin quand tu accomplis ta besogne, ne fais pas le glorieux quand tu esdans la gêne.
27 My son, with humility have self-esteem; prize yourself as you deserve.	27 Mieux vaut l'homme qui travaille et vit dans l'abondance que celui qui va se glorifiant etn'a pas de quoi vivre.
28 Who will acquit him who condemns himself? who will honor him who discredits himself?	28 Mon fils, glorifie-toi modestement et apprécie-toi à ta juste valeur.
29 The poor man is honored for his wisdom as the rich man is honored for his wealth;	29 Qui oserait justifier celui qui se fait tort à soi-même et estimer celui qui se méprise?
30 Honored in poverty, how much more so in wealth! Dishonored in wealth, in poverty how much the more!	30 On honore le pauvre pour son savoir et le riche pour ses richesses.
