Proverbs 4

1 Hear, O children, a father's instruction, be attentive, that you may gain understanding!	1 - Ascoltate, o figliuoli, l'esortazione paterna, state attenti se volete imparare prudenza;
2 Yes, excellent advice I give you; my teaching do not forsake.	2 vi voglio dare un bel regalo, il mio insegnamento non l'abbandonate.
3 When I was my father's child, frail, yet the darling of my mother,	3 Perchè anch'io sono stato di mio padre, tenero ed unico figlio, sotto gli occhi di mia madre;
4 He taught me, and said to me: "Let your heart hold fast my words: keep my commands, that you may live!	4 ed egli mi ammaestrava e mi diceva: «Il tuo cuore accolga le mie parole, conserva i miei precetti e vivrai.
5 "Get wisdom, get understanding! Do not forget or turn aside from the words I utter.	5 Acquista sapienza, acquista prudenza non dimenticarlo e non scostarti dai detti della mia bocca.
6 Forsake her not, and she will preserve you; love her, and she will safeguard you;	6 Non l'abbandonare e ti custodirà, amala e ti conserverà.
7 The beginning of wisdom is: get wisdom; at the cost of all you have, get understanding.	7 Primo principio di sapienza: acquista sapienza, a tutti i costi acquista prudenza.
8 Extol her, and she will exalt you; she will bring you honors if you embrace her;	8 Afferrati a lei e ti solleverà, ne sarai onorato se l'avrai abbracciata.
9 She will put on your head a graceful diadem; a glorious crown will she bestow on you."	9 Accrescerà grazia al tuo capo, di una splendida corona ti cingerà».
10 Hear, my son, and receive my words, and the years of your life shall be many.	10 Ascolta, figliuolo mio, e apprendi le mie parole, affinchè ti si moltiplichino gli anni della vita.
11 On the way of wisdom I direct you, I lead you on straightforward paths.	11 Ti additerò la via della sapienza, ti avvierò sui sentieri della rettitudine,
12 When you walk, your step will not be impeded, and should you run, you will not stumble.	12 nei quali entrato, non ti sentirai impedito i passi, e se corri non avrai inciampo.
13 Hold fast to instruction, never let her go; keep her, for she is your life.	13 Tienti alla regola e non abbandonarla, osservala perchè essa è la tua vita.
14 The path of the wicked enter not, walk not on the way of evil men;	14 Non lasciarti attirare sulla strada degli empi, e non prendere amore per la via dei cattivi,
15 Shun it, cross it not, turn aside from it, and pass on.	15 fuggila, non passar per essa, scansala e abbandonala.
16 For they cannot rest unless they have done evil; to have made no one stumble steals away their sleep.	16 Perchè essi non dormono se non hanno fatto del male, il sonno loro s'invola se non hanno rovinato qualcuno.
17 For they eat the bread of wickedness and drink the wine of violence.	17 Mangiano il pane del delitto e bevono il vino dell'iniquità.
18 But the path of the just is like shining light, that grows in brilliance till perfect day.	18 Il sentiero dei giusti è come la luce che spunta, s'avanza, cresce, finchè è giorno fatto.
19 The way of the wicked is like darkness; they know not on what they stumble.	19 La strada dei tristi è tenebrosa, non sanno dove vanno a cascare.
20 My son, to my words be attentive, to my sayings incline your ear;	20 Figliolo mio, ascolta le mie parole, porgi orecchio ai detti miei;
21 Let them not slip out of your sight, keep them within your heart;	21 non perderli mai di vista, serbali in fondo al cuore;
22 For they are life to those who find them, to man's whole being they are health.	22 perchè sono la vita di chi li trova e la salute di tutto il suo corpo.
23 With closest custody, guard your heart, for in it are the sources of life.	23 Con ogni cautela custodisci il tuo cuore, perchè da esso deriva la vita.
24 Put away from you dishonest talk, deceitful speech put far from you.	24 Bandisci da te il parlar perverso e stia lungi dal tuo labbro la detrazione.
25 Let your eyes look straight ahead and your glance be directly forward.	25 I tuoi occhi guardino dritto e il tuo sguardo preceda i passi tuoi.
26 Survey the path for your feet, and let all your ways be sure.	26 Reggi sul buon sentiero i piedi tuoie avrai accertato il tuo cammino;
27 Turn neither to right nor to left, keep your foot far from evil.	27 Non piegar nè a destra nè a sinistra, ritira il piede dal male. Perchè il Signore conosce le vie che sono a destra, quelle di sinistra sono perverse; egli ti guiderà diritto al tuo cammino e condurrà in pace il tuo viaggio.
