1 At this my heart trembles and leaps out of its place,	1 « Per questo il mio cuore tremò e balzò fuori dal suo posto.
2 To hear his angry voice as it rumbles forth from his mouth!	2 Udite, udite tra lo spavento la sua voce, e il rombo che vien fuori dalla sua bocca!
3 Everywhere under the heavens he sends it, with his lightning, to the ends of the earth.	3 Egli gira il suo sguardo sotto tutti i cieli, e la sua luce va fino all'estremità della terra.
4 Again his voice roars-- the majestic sound of his thunder.	4 Dietro di lui rugge il suono, egli tuona colla voce della sua grandezza; e udita la sua voce, non si potrà seguirne la traccia.
5 He does great things beyond our knowing; wonders past our searching out.	5 Dio tonerà mirabilmente colla sua voce. Egli fa grandi e imperscrutabili cose.
6 For he says to the snow, "Fall to the earth"; likewise to his heavy, drenching rain.	6 Egli comanda alla neve di cadere sulla terra, alle piogge invernali, alle impetuose procelle.
7 He shuts up all mankind indoors;	7 Egli mette un sigillo sulla mano d'ogni uomo, affinchè ciascuno conosca le sue opere.
8 the wild beasts take to cover and remain quietly in their dens.	8 La fiera si ritira nella sua tana, e sta ferma nel suo covile.
9 Out of its chamber comes forth the tempest; from the north winds, the cold.	9 La tempesta esce dai recessi, il freddo dal settentrione.
10 With his breath God brings the frost, and the broad waters become congealed.	10 Al soffio di Dio il ghiaccio s'indurisce, e di nuovo si sciolgono in abbondanza le nevi,
11 With hail, also, the clouds are laden, as they scatter their flashes of light.	11 il frumento brama le nuvole, e le nuvole spandono la loro luce.
12 He it is who changes their rounds, according to his plans, in their task upon the surface of the earth,	12 ESse vanno errando all'intorno, dovunque le guidi il volere di Colui che le governa, per eseguire i suoi ordini sulla superficie della terra,
13 whether for punishment or mercy, as he commands.	13 sia in una tribù, sia nella sua terra, sia in qualche altro luogo in cui la sua misericordia avrà loro ordinato di trovarsi.
14 Hearken to this, O Job! Stand and consider the wondrous works of God!	14 Ascolta, o Giobbe, queste cose, fermati a considerare le maraviglie di Dio.
15 Do you know how God lays his commands upon them, and makes the light shine forth from his clouds?	15 Sai forse quando Dio abbia comandato alle piogge di far apparire la luce delle sue nuvole?
16 Do you know how the clouds are banked, the wondrous work of him who is perfect in knowledge?	16 Hai tu conosciute le grandi vie delle nubi e le scienze perfette?
17 You, whom the streams of water fail when a calm from the south comes over the land,	17 Non sono forse calde le tue vesti quando l'austro soffia sopra la terra?
18 Do you spread out with him the firmament of the skies, hard as a brazen mirror?	18 Hai forse con lui fabbricati i cieli, che sono saldissimi come se fossero gettati in bronzo?
19 Teach us then what we shall say to him; we cannot, for the darkness, make our plea.	19 Insegnaci quello che potremo dirgli, giacché noi siamo involti nelle tenebre.
20 Will he be told about it when I speak, or when a man says he is being destroyed?	20 Chi gli racconterà quello che dico io? Se un uomo ardirà parlargli, resterà annientato.
21 Nay, rather, it is as the light which men see not while it is obscured among the clouds, till the wind comes by and sweeps the clouds away.	21 Ma ora gli uomini non vedono la luce; l'aria all'improvviso s'addensa di nubi: il vento che passa le dissiperà.
22 From the North the splendor comes, surrounding God's awesome majesty!	22 L'oro viene dal settentrione, e a Dio si rende lode con timore.
23 The Almighty! we cannot discover him, pre-eminent in power and judgment; his great justice owes no one an accounting.	23 Noi non possiamo degnamente arrivare a lui. Egli è grande nella potenza, nel giudizio e nella giustizia, ed è ineffabile.
24 Therefore men revere him, though none can see him, however wise their hearts.	24 Per questo gli uomini lo temeranno, e nessuno di quelli che si credono saggi ardirà contemplarlo ».
