1 At this my heart trembles and leaps out of its place,	1 - Di ciò s'atterrisce il mio cuore, e balza fuor dal suo posto:
2 To hear his angry voice as it rumbles forth from his mouth!	2 udite, udite il rombo della sua voce, e il suono che parte dalla bocca di lui;
3 Everywhere under the heavens he sends it, with his lightning, to the ends of the earth.	3 sotto tutti i cieli ei lo sprigiona, e la sua folgore verso gli estremi della terra:
4 Again his voice roars-- the majestic sound of his thunder.	4 dietro ad essa ruggisce un fragore, tuona [Dio] con la sua voce maestosa, nè s'investiga allorchè s'ascolta la sua voce.
5 He does great things beyond our knowing; wonders past our searching out.	5 Tuona Dio con la sua voce mirabilmente, egli che opera cose grandi e imperscrutabili.
6 For he says to the snow, "Fall to the earth"; likewise to his heavy, drenching rain.	6 Comanda egli alla neve che cada sulla terra, e alle piogge invernali e ai suoi violenti acquazzoni;
7 He shuts up all mankind indoors;	7 le mani di ogni uomo ei chiude in un sigillo, affinchè riconosca ciascuno le opere sue:
8 the wild beasts take to cover and remain quietly in their dens.	8 allor la fiera entra nella tana, e dentro la sua grotta dimora.
9 Out of its chamber comes forth the tempest; from the north winds, the cold.	9 Dai luoghi reconditi vien fuori la tempesta, e da Arturo il freddo;
10 With his breath God brings the frost, and the broad waters become congealed.	10 al soffiar di Dio si forma il ghiaccio, e di nuovo s'espandono abbondantissime acque.
11 With hail, also, the clouds are laden, as they scatter their flashes of light.	11 Il frumento desidera le nubi, e le nubi lanciano la loro folgore:
12 He it is who changes their rounds, according to his plans, in their task upon the surface of the earth,	12 esse s'aggirano all'intorno, ovunque le meni la volontà di chi le governa, per compiere tutto ciò ch'ei loro comandasulla superficie dell'orbe della terra,
13 whether for punishment or mercy, as he commands.	13 sia in una sola tribù, sia nella sua terra, sia ovunque la sua bontà vuol che si trovino.
14 Hearken to this, O Job! Stand and consider the wondrous works of God!	14 Presta a ciò orecchio, o Giobbe, férmati, e considera le meraviglie di Dio.
15 Do you know how God lays his commands upon them, and makes the light shine forth from his clouds?	15 capisci tu forse quando Dio abbia comandato alle pioggedi mostrar la folgore delle sue nubi?
16 Do you know how the clouds are banked, the wondrous work of him who is perfect in knowledge?	16 capisci tu forse le vie delle nubi, per cognizioni grandi e perfette?
17 You, whom the streams of water fail when a calm from the south comes over the land,	17 Non s'infocano forse le tue vesti, allorchè la terra è invasa dal vento del sud?
18 Do you spread out with him the firmament of the skies, hard as a brazen mirror?	18 Forse hai tu fabbricato insiem con Lui i cieliche sono saldissimi come se di bronzo fuso?
19 Teach us then what we shall say to him; we cannot, for the darkness, make our plea.	19 Facci sapere che cosa potremo dire a Lui, perchè noi siamo involti nelle tenebre.
20 Will he be told about it when I speak, or when a man says he is being destroyed?	20 Chi riferirà a Lui ciò che io dico? sol che l'uomo ne parli, sarà annientato.
21 Nay, rather, it is as the light which men see not while it is obscured among the clouds, till the wind comes by and sweeps the clouds away.	21 Ed or non si vede la luce, [impedita dall']aere addensatosi a un tratto in nuvole; ma un vento passa e le disperde,
22 From the North the splendor comes, surrounding God's awesome majesty!	22 dal settentrione un aureo [fulgore] s'avanza. A Dio [si deve] lode con tremore:
23 The Almighty! we cannot discover him, pre-eminent in power and judgment; his great justice owes no one an accounting.	23 degnamente non possiamo ritrovarlo; egli è grande per fortezza, giudizio e giustizia, nè si può enarrare.
24 Therefore men revere him, though none can see him, however wise their hearts.	24 Perciò gli uomini devono temerlo, nè ardiranno contemplarlo tutti coloro che si ritengono sapienti.»
