1 Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,	1 Sofar di Naamà prese a dire:
2 Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?	2 «A tante parole non si dovrà forse dare risposta? O il loquace dovrà avere ragione?
3 Should thy lies make men hold their peace? and when thou mockest, shall no man make thee ashamed?	3 I tuoi sproloqui faranno tacere la gente? Ti farai beffe, senza che alcuno ti svergogni?
4 For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in thine eyes.	4 Tu dici: “Pura è la mia condotta, io sono irreprensibile agli occhi tuoi”.
5 But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against thee;	5 Tuttavia, volesse Dio parlare e aprire le labbra contro di te,
6 And that he would shew thee the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.	6 per manifestarti i segreti della sapienza, che sono così difficili all’intelletto, allora sapresti che Dio ti condona parte della tua colpa.
7 Canst thou by searching find out God? canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection?	7 Credi tu di poter scrutare l’intimo di Dio o penetrare la perfezione dell’Onnipotente?
8 It is as high as heaven; what canst thou do? deeper than hell; what canst thou know?	8 È più alta del cielo: che cosa puoi fare? È più profonda del regno dei morti: che cosa ne sai?
9 The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.	9 Più lunga della terra ne è la dimensione, più vasta del mare.
10 If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?	10 Se egli assale e imprigiona e chiama in giudizio, chi glielo può impedire?
11 For he knoweth vain men: he seeth wickedness also; will he not then consider it?	11 Egli conosce gli uomini fallaci; quando scorge l’iniquità, non dovrebbe tenerne conto?
12 For vain man would be wise, though man be born like a wild ass's colt.	12 L’uomo stolto diventerà giudizioso? E un puledro di asino selvatico sarà generato uomo?
13 If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;	13 Ora, se tu a Dio dirigerai il cuore e tenderai a lui le tue palme,
14 If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.	14 se allontanerai l’iniquità che è nella tua mano e non farai abitare l’ingiustizia nelle tue tende,
15 For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:	15 allora potrai alzare il capo senza macchia, sarai saldo e non avrai timori,
16 Because thou shalt forget thy misery, and remember it as waters that pass away:	16 perché dimenticherai l’affanno e te ne ricorderai come di acqua passata.
17 And thine age shall be clearer than the noonday; thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.	17 Più del sole meridiano splenderà la tua vita, l’oscurità sarà per te come l’aurora.
18 And thou shalt be secure, because there is hope; yea, thou shalt dig about thee, and thou shalt take thy rest in safety.	18 Avrai fiducia perché c’è speranza e, guardandoti attorno, riposerai tranquillo.
19 Also thou shalt lie down, and none shall make thee afraid; yea, many shall make suit unto thee.	19 Ti coricherai e nessuno ti metterà paura; anzi, molti cercheranno i tuoi favori.
20 But the eyes of the wicked shall fail, and they shall not escape, and their hope shall be as the giving up of the ghost.	20 Ma gli occhi dei malvagi languiranno, ogni scampo è loro precluso, unica loro speranza è l’ultimo respiro!».
