1 After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.	1 Dopo di ciò, ricorreva una festa dei Giudei, e Gesù salì a Gerusalemme.
2 Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches.	2 Ora, a Gerusalemme, presso la porta delle Pecore, c’è una piscina chiamata in ebraico Bethesda, che ha cinque portici.
3 In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered; waiting for the moving of the water.	3 In questi, giaceva una moltitudine di ciechi, zoppi, paralitici, in attesa che l’acqua si muovesse.
4 And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water, was made whole, of whatsoever infirmity he lay under.	4 Poiché un angelo ogni tanto discendeva nella piscina e agitava l’acqua; Perciò chi vi entrava per primo, dopo che l’acqua era stata agitata, era guarito dalla sua malattia, qualunque essa fosse.
5 And there was a certain man there, that had been eight and thirty years under his infirmity.	5 C'era là un uomo, ammalato da trentotto anni.
6 Him when Jesus had seen lying, and knew that he had been now a long time, he saith to him: Wilt thou be made whole?	6 Gesù, vedendolo disteso e saputo che già da molto tempo era in quello stato, gli dice: «Vuoi guarire?»
7 The infirm man answered him: Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pond. For whilst I am coming, another goeth down before me.	7 Gli rispose l’infermo: «Signore, non ho nessuno che, quando l’acqua è agitata, mi cali nella piscina; e così, mentre vado, un altro scende prima di me.
8 Jesus saith to him: Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.	8 Gli dice Gesù: «Lèvati, prendi il tuo giaciglio e cammina».
9 And immediately the man was made whole: and he took up his bed, and walked. And it was the sabbath that day.	9 All’istante, quello guarì, prese il suo giaciglio e camminava. Quel giorno, però, era un sabato.
10 The Jews therefore said to him that was healed: It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed.	10 Dicevano, perciò, i Giudei al guarito: «È sabato, e non ti è lecito portar via il giaciglio».
11 He answered them: He that made me whole, he said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk.	11 Ma quegli rispose loro: «Chi mi ha guarito, mi ha detto: Prendi il tuo giaciglio e cammina»
12 They asked him therefore: Who is that man who said to thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?	12 Gli domandarono: «Chi è l’uomo che ti ha detto: Prendi e cammina?»
13 But he who was healed, knew not who it was; for Jesus went aside from the multitude standing in the place.	13 E il guarito non sapeva chi fosse; Gesù, infatti, era scomparso perché là c’era folla.
14 Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and saith to him: Behold thou art made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee.	14 Dopo di ciò, Gesù lo incontrò nel tempio e gli disse: «Ecco, sei guarito; non peccare più, affinché non ti succeda di peggio».
15 The man went his way, and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had made him whole.	15 L’uomo se ne andò a dire ai Giudei che era Gesù che l’aveva guarito.
16 Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath.	16 E perciò i Giudei perseguitavano Gesù, perché faceva queste cose di sabato.
17 But Jesus answered them: My Father worketh until now; and I work.	17 Ma egli rispose loro: «Il Padre mio continua ad agire ed anch'io agisco».
18 Hereupon therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he did not only break the sabbath, but also said God was his Father, making himself equal to God.	18 Per questo, a maggior ragione, i Giudei cercavano di ucciderlo, perché non solo violava il. sabato, ma chiamava Dio suo proprio Padre, facendosi uguale a Dio.
19 Then Jesus answered, and said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you, the Son cannot do any thing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doth, these the Son also doth in like manner.	19 Allora Gesù prese a dire loro così: «In verità, in verità vi dico: il Figlio da sé non può fare nulla, ma soltanto ciò che vede fare al Padre; poiché quanto questi fa, il Figlio similmente lo fa.
20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things which himself doth: and greater works than these will he shew him, that you may wonder.	20 Il Padre, infatti, ama il Figlio e gli mostra tutto ciò che egli fa; e gli mostrerà opere maggiori di queste, affinché ne siate meravigliati.
21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and giveth life: so the Son also giveth life to whom he will.	21 Come, infatti, il Padre risuscita i morti e li fa vivere, così anche il Figlio fa vivere chi vuole.
22 For neither doth the Father judge any man, but hath given all judgment to the Son.	22 Poiché il Padre non giudica nessuno, ma ha rimesso al Figlio ogni giudizio,
23 That all men may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father, who hath sent him.	23 affinché tutti onorino il Figlio come onorano il Padre. Chi non onora il Figlio non onora il Padre che lo ha mandato.
24 Amen, amen I say unto you, that he who heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath life everlasting; and cometh not into judgment, but is passed from death to life.	24 In verità, in verità vi dico: chi ascolta la mia parola e crede a colui che mi ha mandato ha la vita eterna e non è sottomesso a condanna, ma è passato dalla morte alla vita.
25 Amen, amen I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live.	25 In verità, in verità vi dico: viene l’ora, ed è adesso, che i morti udranno la voce del Figlio di Dio, e quelli che l’avranno ascoltata vivranno.
26 For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given the Son also to have life in himself:	26 Come, infatti, il Padre ha in se stesso la vita, così ha dato al Figlio d’aver la vita in se stesso;
27 And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of man.	27 e gli ha dato il potere di giudicare, perché è figlio d’uomo.
28 Wonder not at this; for the hour cometh, wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God.	28 Non vi meravigli questo, perché viene l’ora in cui tutti quelli che sono nei sepolcri udranno la sua voce
29 And they that have done good things, shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.	29 e ne usciranno: quelli che bene operarono per una risurrezione di vita, quelli che male operarono per una risurrezione di condanna.
30 I cannot of myself do any thing. As I hear, so I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me.	30 Da me, io non posso far nulla; giudico secondo che ascolto, e il mio giudizio è giusto, perché non cerco la mia volontà ma la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato.
31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.	31 Se io do testimonianza a me stesso, la mia testimonianza non è vera:
32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.	32 è un altro che mi dà testimonianza, ed io so che la testimonianza che egli mi dà è vera.
33 You sent to John, and he gave testimony to the truth.	33 Voi avete mandato da Giovanni ed egli ha dato testimonianza alla verità;
34 But I receive not testimony from man: but I say these things, that you may be saved.	34 non che io riceva testimonianza da un uomo, ma dico questo perché siate salvi.
35 He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.	35 Quegli era la lucerna che arde e risplende, e voi per un momento avete voluto esultare alla sua luce.
36 But I have a greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to perfect; the works themselves, which I do, give testimony of me, that the Father hath sent me.	36 Ma io ho una testimonianza maggiore di quella di Giovanni, perché le opere che il Padre mi ha dato da compiere, queste opere che io faccio, mi danno testimonianza che è stato il Padre a mandarmi.
37 And the Father himself who hath sent me, hath given testimony of me: neither have you heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.	37 E il Padre stesso, che mi ha mandato, mi ha dato testimonianza. Ma voi non avete mai udito la sua voce né avete veduto il suo volto,
38 And you have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him you believe not.	38 e non avete la sua parola che dimora in voi, perché non credete a colui che egli ha mandato.
39 Search the scriptures, for you think in them to have life everlasting; and the same are they that give testimony of me.	39 Voi indagate le Scritture, perché pensate di avere in esse la vita eterna: e sono quelle che danno testimonianza a me;
40 And you will not come to me that you may have life.	40 eppure, voi non volete venire a me per avere la vita.
41 I receive glory not from men.	41 Io non accetto gloria dagli uomini,
42 But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you.	42 ma so che non avete in voi l’amore di Dio.
43 I am come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive.	43 Io son venuto nel nome del Padre mio e voi non mi accogliete; che un altro venga in nome proprio, quello lo riceverete!
44 How can you believe, who receive glory one from another: and the glory which is from God alone, you do not seek?	44 Come potete credere, voi che prendete gloria gli uni dagli altri, e non cercate la gloria che viene dall’unico Dio?
45 Think not that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one that accuseth you, Moses, in whom you trust.	45 Non crediate che io vi accuserò al cospetto del Padre; c’è chi vi accusa: Mosè, nel quale voi avete sperato.
46 For if you did believe Moses, you would perhaps believe me also; for he wrote of me.	46 Se, infatti, credeste a Mosè, credereste a me, poiché di me egli ha scritto.
47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?	47 Ma se non credete agli scritti di lui, come crederete alle mie parole?»
