DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.1 After this there was a Jewish festival, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches.2 Now in Jerusalem next to the Sheep Pool there is a pool called Bethesda in Hebrew, which has fiveporticos;
In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered; waiting for the moving of the water.3 and under these were crowds of sick people, blind, lame, paralysed.
And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water, was made whole, of whatsoever infirmity he lay under.4
And there was a certain man there, that had been eight and thirty years under his infirmity.5 One man there had an il ness which had lasted thirty-eight years,
Him when Jesus had seen lying, and knew that he had been now a long time, he saith to him: Wilt thou be made whole?6 and when Jesus saw him lying there and knew he had been in that condition for a long time, he said,'Do you want to be wel again?'
The infirm man answered him: Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pond. For whilst I am coming, another goeth down before me.7 'Sir,' replied the sick man, 'I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is disturbed; and while Iam stil on the way, someone else gets down there before me.'
Jesus saith to him: Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.8 Jesus said, 'Get up, pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around.'
And immediately the man was made whole: and he took up his bed, and walked. And it was the sabbath that day.9 The man was cured at once, and he picked up his mat and started to walk around. Now that dayhappened to be the Sabbath,
The Jews therefore said to him that was healed: It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed.10 so the Jews said to the man who had been cured, 'It is the Sabbath; you are not al owed to carry yoursleeping-mat.'
He answered them: He that made me whole, he said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk.11 He replied, 'But the man who cured me told me, "Pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around." '
They asked him therefore: Who is that man who said to thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?12 They asked, 'Who is the man who said to you, "Pick up your sleeping-mat and walk around"? '
But he who was healed, knew not who it was; for Jesus went aside from the multitude standing in the place.13 The man had no idea who it was, since Jesus had disappeared, as the place was crowded.
Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and saith to him: Behold thou art made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee.14 After a while Jesus met him in the Temple and said, 'Now you are wel again, do not sin any more, orsomething worse may happen to you.'
The man went his way, and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had made him whole.15 The man went back and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had cured him.
Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath.16 It was because he did things like this on the Sabbath that the Jews began to harass Jesus.
But Jesus answered them: My Father worketh until now; and I work.17 His answer to them was, 'My Father stil goes on working, and I am at work, too.'
Hereupon therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he did not only break the sabbath, but also said God was his Father, making himself equal to God.18 But that only made the Jews even more intent on kil ing him, because not only was he breaking theSabbath, but he spoke of God as his own Father and so made himself God's equal.
Then Jesus answered, and said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you, the Son cannot do any thing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doth, these the Son also doth in like manner.19 To this Jesus replied: In al truth I tel you, by himself the Son can do nothing; he can do only what hesees the Father doing: and whatever the Father does the Son does too.
For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things which himself doth: and greater works than these will he shew him, that you may wonder.20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he himself does, and he wil show him evengreater things than these, works that will astonish you.
For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and giveth life: so the Son also giveth life to whom he will.21 Thus, as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so the Son gives life to anyone he chooses;
For neither doth the Father judge any man, but hath given all judgment to the Son.22 for the Father judges no one; he has entrusted all judgement to the Son,
That all men may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father, who hath sent him.23 so that al may honour the Son as they honour the Father. Whoever refuses honour to the Son refuseshonour to the Father who sent him.
Amen, amen I say unto you, that he who heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath life everlasting; and cometh not into judgment, but is passed from death to life.24 In al truth I tel you, whoever listens to my words, and believes in the one who sent me, has eternallife; without being brought to judgement such a person has passed from death to life.
Amen, amen I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live.25 In al truth I tel you, the hour is coming -- indeed it is already here -- when the dead wil hear the voiceof the Son of God, and al who hear it wil live.
For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given the Son also to have life in himself:26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself;
And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of man.27 and, because he is the Son of man, has granted him power to give judgement.
Wonder not at this; for the hour cometh, wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God.28 Do not be surprised at this, for the hour is coming when the dead wil leave their graves at the sound ofhis voice:
And they that have done good things, shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.29 those who did good will come forth to life; and those who did evil will come forth to judgement.
I cannot of myself do any thing. As I hear, so I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me.30 By myself I can do nothing; I can judge only as I am told to judge, and my judging is just, because Iseek to do not my own wil but the wil of him who sent me.
If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.31 Were I to testify on my own behalf, my testimony would not be true;
There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.32 but there is another witness who speaks on my behalf, and I know that his testimony is true.
You sent to John, and he gave testimony to the truth.33 You sent messengers to John, and he gave his testimony to the truth-
But I receive not testimony from man: but I say these things, that you may be saved.34 not that I depend on human testimony; no, it is for your salvation that I mention it.
He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.35 John was a lamp lit and shining and for a time you were content to enjoy the light that he gave.
But I have a greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to perfect; the works themselves, which I do, give testimony of me, that the Father hath sent me.36 But my testimony is greater than John's: the deeds my Father has given me to perform, these samedeeds of mine testify that the Father has sent me.
And the Father himself who hath sent me, hath given testimony of me: neither have you heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.37 Besides, the Father who sent me bears witness to me himself. You have never heard his voice, youhave never seen his shape,
And you have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him you believe not.38 and his word finds no home in you because you do not believe in the one whom he has sent.
Search the scriptures, for you think in them to have life everlasting; and the same are they that give testimony of me.39 You pore over the scriptures, believing that in them you can find eternal life; it is these scriptures thattestify to me,
And you will not come to me that you may have life.40 and yet you refuse to come to me to receive life!
I receive glory not from men.41 Human glory means nothing to me.
But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you.42 Besides, I know you too well: you have no love of God in you.
I am come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive.43 I have come in the name of my Father and you refuse to accept me; if someone else should come inhis own name you would accept him.
How can you believe, who receive glory one from another: and the glory which is from God alone, you do not seek?44 How can you believe, since you look to each other for glory and are not concerned with the glory thatcomes from the one God?
Think not that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one that accuseth you, Moses, in whom you trust.45 Do not imagine that I am going to accuse you before the Father: you have placed your hopes onMoses, and Moses wil be the one who accuses you.
For if you did believe Moses, you would perhaps believe me also; for he wrote of me.46 If you real y believed him you would believe me too, since it was about me that he was writing;
But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?47 but if you wil not believe what he wrote, how can you believe what I say?
