DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW AMERICAN BIBLE
After these things was a festival day of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.1 After this, there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.
Now there is at Jerusalem a pond, called Probatica, which in Hebrew is named Bethsaida, having five porches.2 Now there is in Jerusalem at the Sheep (Gate) a pool called in Hebrew Bethesda, with five porticoes.
In these lay a great multitude of sick, of blind, of lame, of withered; waiting for the moving of the water.3 In these lay a large number of ill, blind, lame, and crippled.
And an angel of the Lord descended at certain times into the pond; and the water was moved. And he that went down first into the pond after the motion of the water, was made whole, of whatsoever infirmity he lay under.4
And there was a certain man there, that had been eight and thirty years under his infirmity.5 One man was there who had been ill for thirty-eight years.
Him when Jesus had seen lying, and knew that he had been now a long time, he saith to him: Wilt thou be made whole?6 When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been ill for a long time, he said to him, "Do you want to be well?"
The infirm man answered him: Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pond. For whilst I am coming, another goeth down before me.7 The sick man answered him, "Sir, I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up; while I am on my way, someone else gets down there before me."
Jesus saith to him: Arise, take up thy bed, and walk.8 Jesus said to him, "Rise, take up your mat, and walk."
And immediately the man was made whole: and he took up his bed, and walked. And it was the sabbath that day.9 Immediately the man became well, took up his mat, and walked. Now that day was a sabbath.
The Jews therefore said to him that was healed: It is the sabbath; it is not lawful for thee to take up thy bed.10 So the Jews said to the man who was cured, "It is the sabbath, and it is not lawful for you to carry your mat."
He answered them: He that made me whole, he said to me, Take up thy bed, and walk.11 He answered them, "The man who made me well told me, 'Take up your mat and walk.'"
They asked him therefore: Who is that man who said to thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?12 They asked him, "Who is the man who told you, 'Take it up and walk'?"
But he who was healed, knew not who it was; for Jesus went aside from the multitude standing in the place.13 The man who was healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had slipped away, since there was a crowd there.
Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and saith to him: Behold thou art made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee.14 After this Jesus found him in the temple area and said to him, "Look, you are well; do not sin any more, so that nothing worse may happen to you."
The man went his way, and told the Jews, that it was Jesus who had made him whole.15 The man went and told the Jews that Jesus was the one who had made him well.
Therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, because he did these things on the sabbath.16 Therefore, the Jews began to persecute Jesus because he did this on a sabbath.
But Jesus answered them: My Father worketh until now; and I work.17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father is at work until now, so I am at work."
Hereupon therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he did not only break the sabbath, but also said God was his Father, making himself equal to God.18 For this reason the Jews tried all the more to kill him, because he not only broke the sabbath but he also called God his own father, making himself equal to God.
Then Jesus answered, and said to them: Amen, amen, I say unto you, the Son cannot do any thing of himself, but what he seeth the Father doing: for what things soever he doth, these the Son also doth in like manner.19 Jesus answered and said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, a son cannot do anything on his own, but only what he sees his father doing; for what he does, his son will do also.
For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things which himself doth: and greater works than these will he shew him, that you may wonder.20 For the Father loves his Son and shows him everything that he himself does, and he will show him greater works than these, so that you may be amazed.
For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and giveth life: so the Son also giveth life to whom he will.21 For just as the Father raises the dead and gives life, so also does the Son give life to whomever he wishes.
For neither doth the Father judge any man, but hath given all judgment to the Son.22 Nor does the Father judge anyone, but he has given all judgment to his Son,
That all men may honour the Son, as they honour the Father. He who honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father, who hath sent him.23 so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.
Amen, amen I say unto you, that he who heareth my word, and believeth him that sent me, hath life everlasting; and cometh not into judgment, but is passed from death to life.24 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life and will not come to condemnation, but has passed from death to life.
Amen, amen I say unto you, that the hour cometh, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live.25 Amen, amen, I say to you, the hour is coming and is now here when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.
For as the Father hath life in himself, so he hath given the Son also to have life in himself:26 For just as the Father has life in himself, so also he gave to his Son the possession of life in himself.
And he hath given him power to do judgment, because he is the Son of man.27 And he gave him power to exercise judgment, because he is the Son of Man.
Wonder not at this; for the hour cometh, wherein all that are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God.28 Do not be amazed at this, because the hour is coming in which all who are in the tombs will hear his voice
And they that have done good things, shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.29 and will come out, those who have done good deeds to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked deeds to the resurrection of condemnation.
I cannot of myself do any thing. As I hear, so I judge: and my judgment is just; because I seek not my own will, but the will of him that sent me.30 "I cannot do anything on my own; I judge as I hear, and my judgment is just, because I do not seek my own will but the will of the one who sent me.
If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.31 "If I testify on my own behalf, my testimony cannot be verified.
There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.32 But there is another who testifies on my behalf, and I know that the testimony he gives on my behalf is true.
You sent to John, and he gave testimony to the truth.33 You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth.
But I receive not testimony from man: but I say these things, that you may be saved.34 I do not accept testimony from a human being, but I say this so that you may be saved.
He was a burning and a shining light: and you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light.35 He was a burning and shining lamp, and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light.
But I have a greater testimony than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to perfect; the works themselves, which I do, give testimony of me, that the Father hath sent me.36 But I have testimony greater than John's. The works that the Father gave me to accomplish, these works that I perform testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me.
And the Father himself who hath sent me, hath given testimony of me: neither have you heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.37 Moreover, the Father who sent me has testified on my behalf. But you have never heard his voice nor seen his form,
And you have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him you believe not.38 and you do not have his word remaining in you, because you do not believe in the one whom he has sent.
Search the scriptures, for you think in them to have life everlasting; and the same are they that give testimony of me.39 You search the scriptures, because you think you have eternal life through them; even they testify on my behalf.
And you will not come to me that you may have life.40 But you do not want to come to me to have life.
I receive glory not from men.41 "I do not accept human praise;
But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you.42 moreover, I know that you do not have the love of God in you.
I am come in the name of my Father, and you receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him you will receive.43 I came in the name of my Father, but you do not accept me; yet if another comes in his own name, you will accept him.
How can you believe, who receive glory one from another: and the glory which is from God alone, you do not seek?44 How can you believe, when you accept praise from one another and do not seek the praise that comes from the only God?
Think not that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one that accuseth you, Moses, in whom you trust.45 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father: the one who will accuse you is Moses, in whom you have placed your hope.
For if you did believe Moses, you would perhaps believe me also; for he wrote of me.46 For if you had believed Moses, you would have believed me, because he wrote about me.
But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?47 But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"
