| 1 Unto the end, destroy not, for David for an inscription of It title, when Saul sent and watched his house to kill him. | 1 To the choirmaster: according to Do Not Destroy. A Miktam of David, when Saul sent men to watch his house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O my God, protect me from those who rise up against me, |
| 2 Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; and defend me from them that rise up against me. | 2 deliver me from those who work evil, and save me from bloodthirsty men. |
| 3 Deliver me from them that work iniquity, and save me from bloody men. | 3 For, lo, they lie in wait for my life; fierce men band themselves against me. For no transgression or sin of mine, O LORD, |
| 4 For behold they have caught my soul: the mighty have rushed in upon me: | 4 for no fault of mine, they run and make ready. Rouse thyself, come to my help, and see! |
| 5 Neither is it my iniquity, nor my sin, O Lord: without iniquity have I run, and directed my steps. | 5 Thou, LORD God of hosts, art God of Israel. Awake to punish all the nations; spare none of those who treacherously plot evil. [Selah] |
| 6 Rise up thou to meet me, and behold: even thou, O Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel. Attend to visit all the nations: have no mercy on all them that work iniquity. | 6 Each evening they come back, howling like dogs and prowling about the city. |
| 7 They shall return at evening, and shall suffer hunger like dogs: and shall go round about the city. | 7 There they are, bellowing with their mouths, and snarling with their lips-- for "Who," they think, "will hear us?" |
| 8 Behold they shall speak with their mouth, and a sword is in their lips: for who, say they, hath heard us ? | 8 But thou, O LORD, dost laugh at them; thou dost hold all the nations in derision. |
| 9 But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them: thou shalt bring all the nations to nothing. | 9 O my Strength, I will sing praises to thee; for thou, O God, art my fortress. |
| 10 I will keep my strength to thee: for thou art my protector: | 10 My God in his steadfast love will meet me; my God will let me look in triumph on my enemies. |
| 11 my God, his mercy shall prevent me. | 11 Slay them not, lest my people forget; make them totter by thy power, and bring them down, O Lord, our shield! |
| 12 God shall let me see over my enemies: slay them not, lest at any time my people forget. Scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord, my protector: | 12 For the sin of their mouths, the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride. For the cursing and lies which they utter, |
| 13 For the sin of their mouth, and the word of their lips: and let them be taken in their pride. And for their cursing and lying they shall be talked of, | 13 consume them in wrath, consume them till they are no more, that men may know that God rules over Jacob to the ends of the earth. [Selah] |
| 14 when they are consumed: when they are consumed by thy wrath, and they shall be no more. And they shall know that God will rule Jacob, and all the ends of the earth. | 14 Each evening they come back, howling like dogs and prowling about the city. |
| 15 They shall return at evening and shall suffer hunger like dogs: and shall go round about the city. | 15 They roam about for food, and growl if they do not get their fill. |
| 16 They shall be scattered abroad to eat, and shall murmur if they be not filled. | 16 But I will sing of thy might; I will sing aloud of thy steadfast love in the morning. For thou hast been to me a fortress and a refuge in the day of my distress. |
| 17 But I will sing thy strength: and will extol thy mercy in the morning. For thou art become my support, and my refuge, in the day of my trouble. | 17 O my Strength, I will sing praises to thee, for thou, O God, art my fortress, the God who shows me steadfast love. |
| 18 Unto thee, O my helper, will I sing, for thou art God my defence: my God my mercy. |
