1 Ó morte, como tua lembrança é amarga para o homem que vive em paz no meio de seus bens,	1 O death! how bitter the thought of you for the man at peace amid his possessions, For the man unruffled and always successful, who still can enjoy life's pleasures.
2 para o homem tranqüilo e afortunado em tudo, e que ainda se encontra em condição de saborear o alimento!	2 O death! how welcome your sentence to the weak man of failing strength, Tottering and always rebuffed, with no more sight, with vanished hope.
3 Ó morte, tua sentença é suave para o indigente, cujas forças se esgotam,	3 Fear not death's decree for you; remember, it embraces those before you, and those after.
4 para quem está no declínio da idade, carregado de cuidados, para quem não tem mais confiança e perde a paciência.	4 Thus God has ordained for all flesh; why then should you reject the will of the Most High? Whether one has lived a thousand years, a hundred, or ten, in the nether world he has no claim on life.
5 Não temas a sentença da morte; lembra-te dos que te precederam, e de todos os que virão depois de ti: é a sentença pronunciada pelo Senhor sobre todo ser vivo.	5 A reprobate line are the children of sinners, and witless offspring are in the homes of the wicked.
6 Que te sobrevirá por vontade do Altíssimo? Dez anos, cem anos, mil anos...	6 Their dominion is lost to sinners' children, and reproach abides with their descendants.
7 Na habitação dos mortos não se tomam em consideração os anos de vida.	7 Children curse their wicked father, for they suffer disgrace through him.
8 Os filhos dos pecadores tornam-se objeto de abominação, assim como os que freqüentam as casas dos ímpios.	8 Woe to you, O sinful men, who forsake the law of the Most High.
9 A herança dos filhos dos pecadores perecerá. O opróbrio prende-se à sua posteridade.	9 If you have children, calamity will seize them; you will beget them only for groaning. When you stumble, there is lasting joy; at death, you become a curse.
10 Os filhos de um homem ímpio queixam-se de seu pai porque é por sua culpa que estão envergonhados.	10 Whatever is of nought returns to nought, so too the godless from void to void.
11 Desgraçados de vós, homens ímpios, que abandonastes a lei do Senhor, o Altíssimo!	11 Man's body is a fleeting thing, but a virtuous name will never be annihilated.
12 Se nasceis, é na maldição, e quando morrerdes, tereis a maldição como herança.	12 Have a care for your name, for it will stand by you better than precious treasures in the thousands;
13 Tudo o que vem da terra voltará à terra. Assim os ímpios passam da maldição à ruína.	13 The boon of life is for limited days, but a good name, for days without number.
14 Os homens se entristecem com (a perda) de seu corpo; porém, até o nome dos ímpios será aniquilado.	14 My children, heed my instruction about shame; judge of disgrace only according to my rules, For it is not always well to be ashamed, nor is it always the proper thing to blush:
15 Cuida em procurar para ti uma boa reputação, pois esse bem ser-te-á mais estável que mil tesouros grandes e preciosos.	15 Before father and mother be ashamed of immorality, before master and mistress, of falsehood;
16 A vida honesta só tem um número de dias; a boa fama, porém, permanece para sempre.	16 Before prince and ruler, of flattery; before the public assembly, of crime;
17 Meus filhos, guardai em paz meu ensinamento: pois uma sabedoria oculta e um tesouro invisível, para que servem essas duas coisas?	17 Before friend and companion, of disloyalty, and of breaking an oath or agreement.
18 Mais vale um homem que dissimula a sua ignorância, que um homem que oculta a sua sabedoria.	18 Be ashamed of theft from the people where you settle, and of stretching out your elbow when you dine;
19 Tende, pois, vergonha do que vou dizer,	19 Of refusing to give when asked, of defrauding another of his appointed share,
20 porque não é bom ter vergonha de tudo, e nem todas as co isas agradam, na verdade, a todos.	20 Of failing to return a greeting, and of rebuffing a friend;
21 Envergonhai-vos da fornicação, diante de vosso pai e de vossa mãe; e da mentira, diante do que governa e do poderoso;	21 Of gazing at a married woman, and of entertaining thoughts about another's wife; Of trifling with a servant girl you have, and of violating her couch;
22 de um delito, diante do príncipe e do juiz; da iniqüidade, diante da assembléia e do povo;	22 Of using harsh words with friends, and of following up your gifts with insults;
23 da injustiça, diante de teu companheiro e de teu amigo;	23 Of repeating what you hear, and of betraying secrets--
24 de cometeres um roubo no lugar onde moras, por causa da verdade de Deus e de sua aliança. Envergonha-te de pôr os cotovelos sobre a mesa, de usar de fraude no dar e no receber,	24 These are the things you should rightly avoid as shameful if you would be looked upon by everyone with favor.
25 de não responder àqueles que te saúdam, de lançar os olhos para uma prostituta,
26 de desviar os olhos de teu próximo, de tirar o que a ele pertence, sem devolver-lho.
27 Não olhes para a mulher de outrem; não tenhas intimidades com tua criada, e não te ponhas junto do seu leito.
28 Envergonha-te diante de teus amigos de dizer palavras ofensivas; não censures o que deste.
