SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Oh! quanto melhor é admoestar que irritar-se, e não impedir de falar aquele que quer confessar a sua falta!	1 There is the rebuke that is untimely, and there is the person who keeps quiet, and he is the shrewd one.
2 Como o eunuco que anseia por violentar uma donzela,	2 But how much better to rebuke than to fume!
3 assim é o que, por violência, faz um julgamento iníquo.	3 The person who acknowledges a fault wards off punishment.
4 Como é bom que o corrigido manifeste o seu arrependimento! Pois assim se evita um pecado voluntário.	4 Like a eunuch trying to take a girl's virginity is someone who tries to impose justice by force.
5 Há quem se cale e é considerado sábio, e quem se torne odioso pela intemperança no falar.	5 There is the person who keeps quiet and is considered wise, another incurs hatred for talking too much.
6 Há quem se cale por não saber falar, e há quem se cale porque reconhece quando é tempo (de falar).	6 There is the person who keeps quiet, not knowing how to answer, another keeps quiet, knowing whento speak.
7 O sábio permanece calado até o momento (oportuno), mas o leviano e imprudente não espera a ocasião.	7 The wise wil keep quiet til the right moment, but a garrulous fool wil always misjudge it.
8 Aquele que se expande em palavras, prejudica-se a si mesmo; quem se permite todo o desregramento torna-se odioso.	8 Someone who talks too much wil earn dislike, and someone who usurps authority wil earn hatred.
9 Para o homem desprovido de instrução há proveito na infelicidade, mas há certas descobertas que lhe acarretam a ruína.	9 There is the person who finds misfortune a boon, and the piece of luck that turns to loss.
10 Há dom que não é útil. e há dom que é duplamente recompensado.	10 There is the gift that affords you no profit, and the gift that repays you double.
11 Há quem ache a sua perda na própria glória, e há quem levantará a cabeça após uma humilhação.	11 There is the honour that leads to humiliation, and there are people in a low state who raise theirheads.
12 Há quem compre muito por um preço módico, mas que (de fato) o paga pelo sétuplo do seu valor.	12 There is the person who buys much for little, yet pays for it seven times over.
13 O sábio torna-se amável por suas palavras, enquanto que os encantos do insensato desaparecem.	13 The wise wins love with words, while fools may shower favours in vain.
14 O donativo do insensato não te trará proveito, pois ele te fixa com sete olhos.	14 The gift of the stupid wil bring you no advantage, his eyes look for seven times as much in return.
15 Ele dá pouco e censura muitas vezes; quando abre a sua boca é como uma fogueira.	15 He gives little and reviles much, he opens his mouth like the town crier, he lends today and demandspayment tomorrow; he is a detestable fellow.
16 Há quem empresta hoje e amanhã o reclama. Tal homem é odioso.	16 The fool will say, 'I have no friends, I get no gratitude for my good deeds;
17 O insensato não tem amigos, e pelo bem que faz não será bem acatado,	17 those who eat my bread have malicious tongues.' How often he wil be laughed at, and by how many!
18 porque os que comem o seu pão têm línguas falsas; quantas e quantas vezes não zombarão dele?	18 Better a slip on the pavement than a slip of the tongue; this is how ruin takes the wicked by surprise.
19 Pois não agiu com bom senso, distribuindo o que devia guardar e o que não devia guardar.	19 A coarse-grained person is like an indiscreet story endlessly retold by the ignorant.
20 A queda de uma língua mentirosa é como uma queda na laje; assim a ruína dos maus virá de repente.	20 A maxim is rejected when coming from a fool, since the fool does not utter it on the apt occasion.
21 Um homem desagradável é como uma história ruim, que se acha continuamente na boca das pessoas mal-educadas.	21 There is a person who is prevented from sinning by poverty; no qualms of conscience disturb thatperson's rest.
22 Será mal recebida a máxima que sair da boca do insensato, pois que ele a diz fora de tempo.	22 There is a person who courts destruction out of false shame, courts destruction for the sake of a fool'sopinion.
23 Há quem se abstenha de pecar por falta de meios, mas ressente o aguilhão do pecado até em seu repouso.	23 There is a person who out of false shame makes promises to a friend, and so makes an enemy fornothing.
24 Há quem perca a sua alma por causa do respeito humano; perde-a, cedendo a uma pessoa imprudente; perde-se por atender demasiadamente a uma pessoa.	24 Lying is an ugly blot on anyone, and ever on the lips of the undisciplined.
25 Há quem, por falsa vergonha, faça uma promessa a um amigo, e dele se faça gratuitamente um inimigo.	25 A thief is preferable to an inveterate liar, but both are heading for ruin.
26 A mentira é no homem uma vergonhosa mancha: não deixa os lábios das pessoas mal-educadas.	26 Lying is an abominable habit, the liar's disgrace lasts for ever.
27 Mais vale um ladrão do que um mentiroso contumaz, mas ambos terão a ruína como partilha.	27 The wise gains advancement by words, the shrewd wins favour from the great.
28 O comportamento dos mentirosos é aviltante, sua vergonha jamais os abandonará.	28 Whoever til s the soil wil have a full harvest, whoever wins favour from the great wil secure pardon foroffences.
29 O sábio atrai a si a estima por suas palavras; o homem prudente agradará aos poderosos.	29 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of the wise and stifle rebukes like a muzzle on the mouth.
30 Quem cultiva sua terra colherá montes de frutos; quem cultiva a justiça será ele próprio elevado; quem agrada aos poderosos fugirá da iniqüidade.	30 Wisdom concealed, and treasure undiscovered, what use is either of these?
31 Os presentes e as dádivas cegam os olhos dos juízes. São em sua boca como um freio que os torna mudos e os impede de castigar.	31 Better one who conceals his fol y than one who conceals his wisdom.
32 Sabedoria escondida é tesouro invisível. Para que serve uma e outro?
33 Mais vale aquele que dissimula sua insipiência, do que aquele que esconde sua sabedoria.
