LXXNEW JERUSALEM
-1 Better the poor living an honest life than the adept at double-talk who is a fool.
-2 Where knowledge is wanting, zeal is not good; whoever goes too quickly stumbles.
αφροσυνη ανδρος λυμαινεται τας οδους αυτου τον δε θεον αιτιαται τη καρδια αυτου3 Folly leads conduct astray, yet it is against Yahweh that the heart rages.
πλουτος προστιθησιν φιλους πολλους ο δε πτωχος και απο του υπαρχοντος φιλου λειπεται4 Wealth multiplies friends, but the one friend the poor has is taken away.
μαρτυς ψευδης ουκ ατιμωρητος εσται ο δε εγκαλων αδικως ου διαφευξεται5 The false witness wil not go unpunished, no one who utters lies wil go free.
πολλοι θεραπευουσιν προσωπα βασιλεων πας δε ο κακος γινεται ονειδος ανδρι6 The nobleman has many to court his favour, to a giver of gifts, everyone is friend.
πας ος αδελφον πτωχον μισει και φιλιας μακραν εσται εννοια αγαθη τοις ειδοσιν αυτην εγγιει ανηρ δε φρονιμος ευρησει αυτην ο πολλα κακοποιων τελεσιουργει κακιαν ος δε ερεθιζει λογους ου σωθησεται7 The poor man's brothers hate him, every one; his friends -- how much the more do these desert him!He goes in search of words, but there are none to be had.
ο κτωμενος φρονησιν αγαπα εαυτον ος δε φυλασσει φρονησιν ευρησει αγαθα8 Whoever acquires sense wins profit from it, whoever treasures understanding finds happiness.
μαρτυς ψευδης ουκ ατιμωρητος εσται ος δ' αν εκκαυση κακιαν απολειται υπ' αυτης9 The false witness wil not go unpunished, whoever utters lies wil be destroyed.
ου συμφερει αφρονι τρυφη και εαν οικετης αρξηται μεθ' υβρεως δυναστευειν10 It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury, stil less for a slave to govern princes.
ελεημων ανηρ μακροθυμει το δε καυχημα αυτου επερχεται παρανομοις11 Good sense makes for self-control, and for pride in overlooking an offence.
βασιλεως απειλη ομοια βρυγμω λεοντος ωσπερ δε δροσος επι χορτω ουτως το ιλαρον αυτου12 Like the roaring of a lion, the anger of a king, but like dew on the grass his favour.
αισχυνη πατρι υιος αφρων και ουχ αγναι ευχαι απο μισθωματος εταιρας13 A foolish child is a disaster for the father, the bickerings of a wife are like an ever-dripping gutter.
οικον και υπαρξιν μεριζουσιν πατερες παισιν παρα δε θεου αρμοζεται γυνη ανδρι14 From fathers comes inheritance of house and wealth, from Yahweh a wife who is discreet.
δειλια κατεχει ανδρογυναιον ψυχη δε αεργου πεινασει15 Idleness lul s to sleep, the feckless soul wil go hungry.
ος φυλασσει εντολην τηρει την εαυτου ψυχην ο δε καταφρονων των εαυτου οδων απολειται16 Keeping the commandment is self-preservation, but whoever despises these ways wil die.
δανιζει θεω ο ελεων πτωχον κατα δε το δομα αυτου ανταποδωσει αυτω17 Whoever is kind to the poor is lending to Yahweh who wil repay him the kindness done.
παιδευε υιον σου ουτως γαρ εσται ευελπις εις δε υβριν μη επαιρου τη ψυχη σου18 While there is hope for him, chastise your child, but do not get so angry as to kill him.
κακοφρων ανηρ πολλα ζημιωθησεται εαν δε λοιμευηται και την ψυχην αυτου προσθησει19 The violent lays himself open to a penalty; spare him, and you aggravate his crime.
ακουε υιε παιδειαν πατρος σου ινα σοφος γενη επ' εσχατων σου20 Listen to advice, accept correction, to be the wiser in the time to come.
πολλοι λογισμοι εν καρδια ανδρος η δε βουλη του κυριου εις τον αιωνα μενει21 Many are the plans in the human heart, but the purpose of Yahweh -- that stands firm.
καρπος ανδρι ελεημοσυνη κρεισσων δε πτωχος δικαιος η πλουσιος ψευστης22 Faithful love is what people look for in a person; they prefer the poor to a liar.
φοβος κυριου εις ζωην ανδρι ο δε αφοβος αυλισθησεται εν τοποις ου ουκ επισκοπειται γνωσις23 The fear of Yahweh leads to life, it brings food and shelter, without fear of evil.
ο εγκρυπτων εις τον κολπον αυτου χειρας αδικως ουδε τω στοματι ου μη προσαγαγη αυτας24 Into the dish the idler dips his hand, but bring it back to his mouth he cannot.
λοιμου μαστιγουμενου αφρων πανουργοτερος γινεται εαν δε ελεγχης ανδρα φρονιμον νοησει αισθησιν25 Strike a cynic, and simpletons wil be more wary; reprove the intel igent and he wil understand yourmeaning.
ο ατιμαζων πατερα και απωθουμενος μητερα αυτου καταισχυνθησεται και επονειδιστος εσται26 He who il -treats his father and drives out his mother is a child both worthless and depraved.
υιος απολειπομενος φυλαξαι παιδειαν πατρος μελετησει ρησεις κακας27 Give up listening to instruction, my child, if you mean to stray from words of knowledge.
ο εγγυωμενος παιδα αφρονα καθυβριζει δικαιωμα στομα δε ασεβων καταπιεται κρισεις28 A perjured witness holds the law in scorn; the mouth of the wicked feasts on evil-doing.
ετοιμαζονται ακολαστοις μαστιγες και τιμωριαι ωμοις αφρονων29 Punishments were made for mockers, and beating for the backs of fools.
