1 - | 1 Better the poor living an honest life than the adept at double-talk who is a fool. |
2 - | 2 Where knowledge is wanting, zeal is not good; whoever goes too quickly stumbles. |
3 αφροσυνη ανδρος λυμαινεται τας οδους αυτου τον δε θεον αιτιαται τη καρδια αυτου | 3 Folly leads conduct astray, yet it is against Yahweh that the heart rages. |
4 πλουτος προστιθησιν φιλους πολλους ο δε πτωχος και απο του υπαρχοντος φιλου λειπεται | 4 Wealth multiplies friends, but the one friend the poor has is taken away. |
5 μαρτυς ψευδης ουκ ατιμωρητος εσται ο δε εγκαλων αδικως ου διαφευξεται | 5 The false witness wil not go unpunished, no one who utters lies wil go free. |
6 πολλοι θεραπευουσιν προσωπα βασιλεων πας δε ο κακος γινεται ονειδος ανδρι | 6 The nobleman has many to court his favour, to a giver of gifts, everyone is friend. |
7 πας ος αδελφον πτωχον μισει και φιλιας μακραν εσται εννοια αγαθη τοις ειδοσιν αυτην εγγιει ανηρ δε φρονιμος ευρησει αυτην ο πολλα κακοποιων τελεσιουργει κακιαν ος δε ερεθιζει λογους ου σωθησεται | 7 The poor man's brothers hate him, every one; his friends -- how much the more do these desert him!He goes in search of words, but there are none to be had. |
8 ο κτωμενος φρονησιν αγαπα εαυτον ος δε φυλασσει φρονησιν ευρησει αγαθα | 8 Whoever acquires sense wins profit from it, whoever treasures understanding finds happiness. |
9 μαρτυς ψευδης ουκ ατιμωρητος εσται ος δ' αν εκκαυση κακιαν απολειται υπ' αυτης | 9 The false witness wil not go unpunished, whoever utters lies wil be destroyed. |
10 ου συμφερει αφρονι τρυφη και εαν οικετης αρξηται μεθ' υβρεως δυναστευειν | 10 It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury, stil less for a slave to govern princes. |
11 ελεημων ανηρ μακροθυμει το δε καυχημα αυτου επερχεται παρανομοις | 11 Good sense makes for self-control, and for pride in overlooking an offence. |
12 βασιλεως απειλη ομοια βρυγμω λεοντος ωσπερ δε δροσος επι χορτω ουτως το ιλαρον αυτου | 12 Like the roaring of a lion, the anger of a king, but like dew on the grass his favour. |
13 αισχυνη πατρι υιος αφρων και ουχ αγναι ευχαι απο μισθωματος εταιρας | 13 A foolish child is a disaster for the father, the bickerings of a wife are like an ever-dripping gutter. |
14 οικον και υπαρξιν μεριζουσιν πατερες παισιν παρα δε θεου αρμοζεται γυνη ανδρι | 14 From fathers comes inheritance of house and wealth, from Yahweh a wife who is discreet. |
15 δειλια κατεχει ανδρογυναιον ψυχη δε αεργου πεινασει | 15 Idleness lul s to sleep, the feckless soul wil go hungry. |
16 ος φυλασσει εντολην τηρει την εαυτου ψυχην ο δε καταφρονων των εαυτου οδων απολειται | 16 Keeping the commandment is self-preservation, but whoever despises these ways wil die. |
17 δανιζει θεω ο ελεων πτωχον κατα δε το δομα αυτου ανταποδωσει αυτω | 17 Whoever is kind to the poor is lending to Yahweh who wil repay him the kindness done. |
18 παιδευε υιον σου ουτως γαρ εσται ευελπις εις δε υβριν μη επαιρου τη ψυχη σου | 18 While there is hope for him, chastise your child, but do not get so angry as to kill him. |
19 κακοφρων ανηρ πολλα ζημιωθησεται εαν δε λοιμευηται και την ψυχην αυτου προσθησει | 19 The violent lays himself open to a penalty; spare him, and you aggravate his crime. |
20 ακουε υιε παιδειαν πατρος σου ινα σοφος γενη επ' εσχατων σου | 20 Listen to advice, accept correction, to be the wiser in the time to come. |
21 πολλοι λογισμοι εν καρδια ανδρος η δε βουλη του κυριου εις τον αιωνα μενει | 21 Many are the plans in the human heart, but the purpose of Yahweh -- that stands firm. |
22 καρπος ανδρι ελεημοσυνη κρεισσων δε πτωχος δικαιος η πλουσιος ψευστης | 22 Faithful love is what people look for in a person; they prefer the poor to a liar. |
23 φοβος κυριου εις ζωην ανδρι ο δε αφοβος αυλισθησεται εν τοποις ου ουκ επισκοπειται γνωσις | 23 The fear of Yahweh leads to life, it brings food and shelter, without fear of evil. |
24 ο εγκρυπτων εις τον κολπον αυτου χειρας αδικως ουδε τω στοματι ου μη προσαγαγη αυτας | 24 Into the dish the idler dips his hand, but bring it back to his mouth he cannot. |
25 λοιμου μαστιγουμενου αφρων πανουργοτερος γινεται εαν δε ελεγχης ανδρα φρονιμον νοησει αισθησιν | 25 Strike a cynic, and simpletons wil be more wary; reprove the intel igent and he wil understand yourmeaning. |
26 ο ατιμαζων πατερα και απωθουμενος μητερα αυτου καταισχυνθησεται και επονειδιστος εσται | 26 He who il -treats his father and drives out his mother is a child both worthless and depraved. |
27 υιος απολειπομενος φυλαξαι παιδειαν πατρος μελετησει ρησεις κακας | 27 Give up listening to instruction, my child, if you mean to stray from words of knowledge. |
28 ο εγγυωμενος παιδα αφρονα καθυβριζει δικαιωμα στομα δε ασεβων καταπιεται κρισεις | 28 A perjured witness holds the law in scorn; the mouth of the wicked feasts on evil-doing. |
29 ετοιμαζονται ακολαστοις μαστιγες και τιμωριαι ωμοις αφρονων | 29 Punishments were made for mockers, and beating for the backs of fools. |
