VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Videns autem Jesus turbas, ascendit in montem, et cum sedisset, accesserunt ad eum discipuli ejus,1 Seeing the crowds, he went onto the mountain. And when he was seated his disciples came to him.
et aperiens os suum docebat eos dicens :2 Then he began to speak. This is what he taught them:
Beati pauperes spiritu : quoniam ipsorum est regnum cælorum.3 How blessed are the poor in spirit: the kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
Beati mites : quoniam ipsi possidebunt terram.4 Blessed are the gentle: they shal have the earth as inheritance.
Beati qui lugent : quoniam ipsi consolabuntur.5 Blessed are those who mourn: they shal be comforted.
Beati qui esuriunt et sitiunt justitiam : quoniam ipsi saturabuntur.6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for uprightness: they shal have their fil .
Beati misericordes : quoniam ipsi misericordiam consequentur.7 Blessed are the merciful: they shal have mercy shown them.
Beati mundo corde : quoniam ipsi Deum videbunt.8 Blessed are the pure in heart: they shal see God.
Beati pacifici : quoniam filii Dei vocabuntur.9 Blessed are the peacemakers: they shal be recognised as children of God.
Beati qui persecutionem patiuntur propter justitiam : quoniam ipsorum est regnum cælorum.10 Blessed are those who are persecuted in the cause of uprightness: the kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
Beati estis cum maledixerint vobis, et persecuti vos fuerint, et dixerint omne malum adversum vos mentientes, propter me :11 'Blessed are you when people abuse you and persecute you and speak al kinds of calumny againstyou falsely on my account.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven; this is how they persecuted the prophetsbefore you.
Vos estis sal terræ. Quod si sal evanuerit, in quo salietur ? ad nihilum valet ultra, nisi ut mittatur foras, et conculcetur ab hominibus.13 'You are salt for the earth. But if salt loses its taste, what can make it salty again? It is good fornothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled under people's feet.
Vos estis lux mundi. Non potest civitas abscondi supra montem posita,14 'You are light for the world. A city built on a hil -top cannot be hidden.
No one lights a lamp to put it under a tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone inthe house.
In the same way your light must shine in people's sight, so that, seeing your good works, they maygive praise to your Father in heaven.
Nolite putare quoniam veni solvere legem aut prophetas : non veni solvere, sed adimplere.17 'Do not imagine that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets. I have come not to abolish but tocomplete them.
Amen quippe dico vobis, donec transeat cælum et terra, jota unum aut unus apex non præteribit a lege, donec omnia fiant.18 In truth I tell you, till heaven and earth disappear, not one dot, not one little stroke, is to disappear fromthe Law until al its purpose is achieved.
Therefore, anyone who infringes even one of the least of these commandments and teaches others todo the same wil be considered the least in the kingdom of Heaven; but the person who keeps them and teachesthem wil be considered great in the kingdom of Heaven.
'For I tell you, if your uprightness does not surpass that of the scribes and Pharisees, you wil neverget into the kingdom of Heaven.
You have heard how it was said to our ancestors, You shal not kil ; and if anyone does kil he mustanswer for it before the court.
Qui autem dixerit, fatue : reus erit gehennæ ignis.22 But I say this to you, anyone who is angry with a brother wil answer for it before the court; anyone whocal s a brother "Fool" wil answer for it before the Sanhedrin; and anyone who cal s him "Traitor" wil answer for it in hel fire.
Si ergo offers munus tuum ad altare, et ibi recordatus fueris quia frater tuus habet aliquid adversum te :23 So then, if you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother hassomething against you,
relinque ibi munus tuum ante altare, et vade prius reconciliari fratri tuo : et tunc veniens offeres munus tuum.24 leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then comeback and present your offering.
Esto consentiens adversario tuo cito dum es in via cum eo : ne forte tradat te adversarius judici, et judex tradat te ministro : et in carcerem mittaris.25 Come to terms with your opponent in good time while you are stil on the way to the court with him, orhe may hand you over to the judge and the judge to the officer, and you wil be thrown into prison.
Amen dico tibi, non exies inde, donec reddas novissimum quadrantem.
In truth I tell you, you wil not get out til you have paid the last penny.
Audistis quia dictum est antiquis : Non mœchaberis.27 'You have heard how it was said, You shall not commit adultery.
But I say this to you, if a man looks at a woman lustfully, he has already committed adultery with her inhis heart.
If your right eye should be your downfal , tear it out and throw it away; for it wil do you less harm tolose one part of yourself than to have your whole body thrown into hell.
And if your right hand should be your downfall, cut it off and throw it away; for it wil do you less harmto lose one part of yourself than to have your whole body go to hel .
It has also been said, Anyone who divorces his wife must give her a writ of dismissal.
But I say this to you, everyone who divorces his wife, except for the case of an il icit marriage, makesher an adulteress; and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
Iterum audistis quia dictum est antiquis : Non perjurabis : reddes autem Domino juramenta tua.33 'Again, you have heard how it was said to our ancestors, You must not break your oath, but must fulfilyour oaths to the Lord.
Ego autem dico vobis, non jurare omnino, neque per cælum, quia thronus Dei est :34 But I say this to you, do not swear at al , either by heaven, since that is God's throne;
neque per terram, quia scabellum est pedum ejus : neque per Jerosolymam, quia civitas est magni regis :35 or by earth, since that is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, since that is the city of the great King.
neque per caput tuum juraveris, quia non potes unum capillum album facere, aut nigrum.36 Do not swear by your own head either, since you cannot turn a single hair white or black.
All you need say is "Yes" if you mean yes, "No" if you mean no; anything more than this comes from the Evil One.
Audistis quia dictum est : Oculum pro oculo, et dentem pro dente.38 'You have heard how it was said: Eye for eye and tooth for tooth.
Ego autem dico vobis, non resistere malo : sed si quis te percusserit in dexteram maxillam tuam, præbe illi et alteram :39 But I say this to you: offer no resistance to the wicked. On the contrary, if anyone hits you on the rightcheek, offer him the other as wel ;
et ei, qui vult tecum judicio contendere, et tunicam tuam tollere, dimitte ei et pallium :40 if someone wishes to go to law with you to get your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.
et quicumque te angariaverit mille passus, vade cum illo et alia duo.41 And if anyone requires you to go one mile, go two miles with him.
Give to anyone who asks you, and if anyone wants to borrow, do not turn away.
Audistis quia dictum est : Diliges proximum tuum, et odio habebis inimicum tuum.43 'You have heard how it was said, You wil love your neighbour and hate your enemy.
Ego autem dico vobis : diligite inimicos vestros, benefacite his qui oderunt vos, et orate pro persequentibus et calumniantibus vos :44 But I say this to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you;
ut sitis filii Patris vestri, qui in cælis est : qui solem suum oriri facit super bonos et malos : et pluit super justos et injustos.45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven, for he causes his sun to rise on the bad as wellas the good, and sends down rain to fal on the upright and the wicked alike.
For if you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Do not even the tax col ectors do asmuch?
Et si salutaveritis fratres vestros tantum, quid amplius facitis ? nonne et ethnici hoc faciunt ?47 And if you save your greetings for your brothers, are you doing anything exceptional?
Estote ergo vos perfecti, sicut et Pater vester cælestis perfectus est.48 Do not even the gentiles do as much? You must therefore be perfect, just as your heavenly Father isperfect.'
