LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Il primo giorno della settimana, di buon mattino, si recarono al sepolcro, portando gli aromi che avevano preparato.	1 On the first day of the week, at the first sign of dawn, they went to the tomb with the spices they hadprepared.
2 Trovarono che la pietra che chiudeva il sepolcro era stata rimossa,	2 They found that the stone had been rol ed away from the tomb,
3 ma, entrate, non trovarono il corpo del Signore Gesù.	3 but on entering they could not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 Se ne stavano lì senza sapere che cosa fare, quando apparvero loro due uomini, con vesti splendenti.	4 As they stood there puzzled about this, two men in bril iant clothes suddenly appeared at their side.
5 Le donne, impaurite, tenevano il volto chinato a terra. Ma i due uomini dissero loro: "Perché cercate tra i morti il vivente?	5 Terrified, the women bowed their heads to the ground. But the two said to them, 'Why look among thedead for someone who is alive?
6 Non è qui, ma è risuscitato. Ricordatevi come vi ha parlato quando era ancora in Galilea,	6 He is not here; he has risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee:
7 quando diceva che era necessario che il Figlio dell'uomo fosse consegnato in mano ai peccatori, che fosse crocifisso e il terzo giorno risuscitasse".	7 that the Son of man was destined to be handed over into the power of sinful men and be crucified, andrise again on the third day.'
8 E si ricordarono delle sue parole.	8 And they remembered his words.
9 Tornate dal sepolcro, raccontarono tutto questo agli Undici e a tutti gli altri.	9 And they returned from the tomb and told al this to the Eleven and to al the others.
10 Erano Maria di Màgdala, Giovanna e Maria di Giacomo. Anche le altre donne che erano insieme lo raccontarono agli apostoli.	10 The women were Mary of Magdala, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. And the other womenwith them also told the apostles,
11 Ma queste parole parvero ad essi come un'allucinazione e non credettero alle donne.	11 but this story of theirs seemed pure nonsense, and they did not believe them.
12 Pietro, però, alzatosi, corse al sepolcro. Guardò dentro e vide solo le bende. E se ne tornò indietro meravigliato di quanto era avvenuto.	12 Peter, however, went off to the tomb, running. He bent down and looked in and saw the linen clothsbut nothing else; he then went back home, amazed at what had happened.
13 In quel medesimo giorno, due dei discepoli si trovavano in cammino verso un villaggio, detto Emmaus, distante circa sette miglia da Gerusalemme,	13 Now that very same day, two of them were on their way to a vil age cal ed Emmaus, seven miles fromJerusalem,
14 e discorrevano fra loro di tutto quello che era accaduto.	14 and they were talking together about al that had happened.
15 Mentre discorrevano e discutevano, Gesù si avvicinò e si mise a camminare con loro.	15 And it happened that as they were talking together and discussing it, Jesus himself came up andwalked by their side;
16 Ma i loro occhi erano impediti dal riconoscerlo.	16 but their eyes were prevented from recognising him.
17 Ed egli disse loro: "Che discorsi sono questi che vi scambiate l'un l'altro, cammin facendo?". Si fermarono, tristi.	17 He said to them, 'What are all these things that you are discussing as you walk along?' They stopped,their faces downcast.
18 Uno di loro, di nome Cleopa, gli disse: "Tu solo sei così straniero in Gerusalemme da non sapere ciò che vi è accaduto in questi giorni?".	18 Then one of them, called Cleopas, answered him, 'You must be the only person staying in Jerusalemwho does not know the things that have been happening there these last few days.'
19 Domandò: "Che cosa?". Gli risposero: "Il caso di Gesù, il Nazareno, che era un profeta potente in opere e in parole, davanti a Dio e a tutto il popolo;	19 He asked, 'What things?' They answered, 'Al about Jesus of Nazareth, who showed himself aprophet powerful in action and speech before God and the whole people;
20 come i gran sacerdoti e i nostri capi lo hanno consegnato per essere condannato a morte e lo hanno crocifisso.	20 and how our chief priests and our leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death, and had himcrucified.
21 Noi speravamo che fosse lui quello che avrebbe liberato Israele. Ma siamo già al terzo giorno da quando sono accaduti questi fatti.	21 Our own hope had been that he would be the one to set Israel free. And this is not al : two whole dayshave now gone by since it al happened;
22 Tuttavia alcune donne tra noi ci hanno sconvolti. Esse si sono recate di buon mattino al sepolcro,	22 and some women from our group have astounded us: they went to the tomb in the early morning,
23 ma non hanno trovato il suo corpo. Sono tornate a dirci di aver avuto una visione di angeli, i quali affermano che egli è vivo.	23 and when they could not find the body, they came back to tel us they had seen a vision of angelswho declared he was alive.
24 Alcuni dei nostri sono andati al sepolcro e hanno trovato tutto come avevano detto le donne, ma lui non l'hanno visto".	24 Some of our friends went to the tomb and found everything exactly as the women had reported, but ofhim they saw nothing.'
25 Allora egli disse loro: "O stolti e tardi di cuore a credere a quello che hanno detto i profeti!	25 Then he said to them, 'You foolish men! So slow to believe al that the prophets have said!
26 Non doveva forse il Cristo patire tutto questo ed entrare nella sua gloria?".	26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer before entering into his glory?'
27 E cominciando da Mosè e da tutti i profeti, spiegò loro quanto lo riguardava in tutte le Scritture.	27 Then, starting with Moses and going through al the prophets, he explained to them the passagesthroughout the scriptures that were about himself.
28 Quando furono vicini al villaggio dove erano diretti, egli fece finta di proseguire.	28 When they drew near to the vil age to which they were going, he made as if to go on;
29 Ma essi lo costrinsero a fermarsi, dicendo: "Resta con noi, perché si fa sera ed il sole ormai tramonta". Egli entrò per rimanere con loro.	29 but they pressed him to stay with them saying, 'It is nearly evening, and the day is almost over.' So hewent in to stay with them.
30 Or avvenne che mentre si trovava a tavola con loro prese il pane, pronunciò la benedizione, lo spezzò e lo distribuì loro.	30 Now while he was with them at table, he took the bread and said the blessing; then he broke it andhanded it to them.
31 Allora si aprirono i loro occhi e lo riconobbero. Ma egli disparve ai loro sguardi.	31 And their eyes were opened and they recognised him; but he had vanished from their sight.
32 Si dissero allora l'un l'altro: "Non ardeva forse il nostro cuore quando egli, lungo la via, ci parlava e ci spiegava le Scritture?".	32 Then they said to each other, 'Did not our hearts burn within us as he talked to us on the road andexplained the scriptures to us?'
33 Quindi si alzarono e ritornarono subito a Gerusalemme, dove trovarono gli Undici riuniti e quelli che erano con loro.	33 They set out that instant and returned to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven assembled togetherwith their companions,
34 Costoro dicevano: "Il Signore è veramente risorto ed è apparso a Simone".	34 who said to them, 'The Lord has indeed risen and has appeared to Simon.'
35 Ed essi raccontarono ciò che era accaduto lungo il cammino e come l'avevano riconosciuto allo spezzare del pane.	35 Then they told their story of what had happened on the road and how they had recognised him at thebreaking of bread.
36 Mentre parlavano di queste cose, Gesù stette in mezzo a loro e disse: "Pace a voi!".	36 They were still talking about al this when he himself stood among them and said to them, 'Peace bewith you!'
37 Sconvolti e pieni di paura, credevano di vedere un fantasma.	37 In a state of alarm and fright, they thought they were seeing a ghost.
38 Ma egli disse loro: "Perché siete turbati? E perché sorgono dubbi nei vostri cuori?	38 But he said, 'Why are you so agitated, and why are these doubts stirring in your hearts?
39 Guardate le mie mani e i miei piedi: sono proprio io! Toccatemi ed osservate: un fantasma non ha carne ed ossa come vedete che io ho".	39 See by my hands and my feet that it is I myself. Touch me and see for yourselves; a ghost has noflesh and bones as you can see I have.'
40 E mentre diceva queste cose, mostrava loro le mani e i piedi.	40 And as he said this he showed them his hands and his feet.
41 Ma poiché per la gioia non riuscivano a crederci ed erano pieni di stupore, egli disse loro: "Avete qualcosa da mangiare?".	41 Their joy was so great that they stil could not believe it, as they were dumbfounded; so he said tothem, 'Have you anything here to eat?'
42 Gli diedero un po' di pesce arrostito.	42 And they offered him a piece of gril ed fish,
43 Egli lo prese e lo mangiò davanti a loro.	43 which he took and ate before their eyes.
44 Poi disse: "Era proprio questo che vi dicevo quando ero ancora con voi: bisogna che si adempia tutto ciò che di me sta scritto nella legge di Mosè, nei Profeti e nei Salmi".	44 Then he told them, 'This is what I meant when I said, while I was stil with you, that everything writtenabout me in the Law of Moses, in the Prophets and in the Psalms, was destined to be fulfilled.'
45 Allora aprì loro la mente all'intelligenza delle Scritture.	45 He then opened their minds to understand the scriptures,
46 Ed aggiunse: "Così sta scritto: il Cristo doveva patire e il terzo giorno risuscitare dai morti;	46 and he said to them, 'So it is written that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from thedead,
47 nel suo nome saranno predicati a tutte le genti la conversione e il perdono dei peccati.	47 and that, in his name, repentance for the forgiveness of sins would be preached to al nations,beginning from Jerusalem.
48 Voi sarete testimoni di tutto questo, cominciando da Gerusalemme.	48 You are witnesses to this.
49 Ed ecco che io manderò su di voi quello che il Padre mio ha promesso. Voi però restate in città, fino a quando non sarete rivestiti di potenza dall'alto".	49 'And now I am sending upon you what the Father has promised. Stay in the city, then, until you areclothed with the power from on high.'
50 Poi li condusse fuori, verso Betània e, alzate le mani, li benedì.	50 Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and raising his hands he blessed them.
51 Mentre li benediceva, si separò da loro e veniva portato nel cielo.	51 Now as he blessed them, he withdrew from them and was carried up to heaven.
52 Essi, dopo averlo adorato, se ne tornarono a Gerusalemme con grande gioia.	52 They worshipped him and then went back to Jerusalem ful of joy;
53 E stavano sempre nel tempio lodando e ringraziando Dio.	53 and they were continually in the Temple praising God.
