Deuteronomio 21

1 Se nel paese di cui il Signore tuo Dio sta per darti il possesso, si troverà un uomo ucciso, disteso nella campagna, senza che si sappia chi l'abbia ucciso,	1 “When there will have been found in the land, which the Lord your God will give to you, the corpse of a man who has been killed, and it is not known who is guilty of the murder,
2 i tuoi anziani e i tuoi giudici usciranno e misureranno la distanza fra l'ucciso e le città dei dintorni.	2 your judges and those greater by birth shall go out and measure, from the place of the corpse, the distance to each of the surrounding cities.
3 Allora gli anziani della città più vicina all'ucciso prenderanno una giovenca che non abbia ancora lavorato né portato il giogo;	3 And in whichever one they perceive to be closer than the others, the elders shall take a calf from the herd, one which has not pulled with a yoke, nor tilled with a plow.
4 gli anziani di quella città faranno scendere la giovenca presso un corso di acqua corrente, in luogo dove non si lavora e non si semina e là spezzeranno la nuca alla giovenca.	4 And they shall lead it into a rough and stony valley, one which has never been tilled or sown. And in that place, they shall cut the neck of the calf.
5 Si avvicineranno poi i sacerdoti, figli di Levi, poiché il Signore tuo Dio li ha scelti per servirlo e per dare la benedizione nel nome del Signore e la loro parola dovrà decidere ogni controversia e ogni caso di lesione.	5 And the priests the sons of Levi shall approach, those whom the Lord your God has chosen to minister to him, and to bless in his name, and to decide every controversy by their word, and to judge which things are clean and which are unclean.
6 Allora tutti gli anziani di quella città che sono più vicini al cadavere, si laveranno le mani sulla giovenca a cui sarà stata spezzata la nuca nel torrente;	6 And those greater by birth of that city, nearest to the one who was slain, shall go and shall wash their hands over the calf that was killed in the valley.
7 prendendo la parola diranno: Le nostre mani non hanno sparso questo sangue e i nostri occhi non l'hanno visto spargere.	7 And they shall say: ‘Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it.
8 Signore, perdona al tuo popolo Israele, che tu hai redento, e non lasciar sussistere un sangue innocente in mezzo al tuo popolo Israele! Quel sangue sparso resterà per essi espiato.	8 Be merciful to your people Israel, whom you have redeemed, O Lord, and do not charge them with innocent blood in the midst of your people Israel.’ And so the guilt of the blood will be taken away from them.
9 Così tu toglierai da te il sangue innocente, perché avrai fatto ciò che è retto agli occhi del Signore.	9 Then you will be free from the blood that was shed against the innocent, when you will have done as the Lord has instructed you.
10 Se andrai in guerra contro i tuoi nemici e il Signore tuo Dio te li avrà messi nelle mani e tu avrai fatto prigionieri,	10 If you have gone out to fight against your enemies, and the Lord your God has delivered them into your hand, and if, as you are leading away the captives,
11 se vedrai tra i prigionieri una donna bella d'aspetto e ti sentirai legato a lei tanto da volerla prendere in moglie, te la condurrai a casa.	11 you see among the number of the captives a beautiful woman, and you love her, and you are willing to have her as a wife:
12 Essa si raderà il capo, si taglierà le unghie,	12 then you shall lead her into your house. And she shall shave off her hair, and cut her nails short,
13 si leverà la veste che portava quando fu presa, dimorerà in casa tua e piangerà suo padre e sua madre per un mese intero; dopo, potrai accostarti a lei e comportarti da marito verso di lei e sarà tua moglie.	13 and remove the garment in which she was captured. And she shall sit in your house and weep for her father and mother, for one month. And after that, you shall enter to her and sleep with her, and she shall be your wife.
14 Se in seguito non ti sentissi più di amarla, la lascerai andare a suo piacere, ma non potrai assolutamente venderla per denaro né trattarla come una schiava, per il fatto che tu l'hai disonorata.	14 But if afterwards she does not sit well in your mind, you shall set her free. You cannot sell her for money, nor can you oppress her by force. For you have humiliated her.
15 Se un uomo avrà due mogli, l'una amata e l'altra odiosa, e tanto l'amata quanto l'odiosa gli avranno procreato figli, se il primogenito è il figlio dell'odiosa,	15 If a man has two wives, one beloved and the other hated, and they have produced children by him, and if the son of the hated wife is the firstborn,
16 quando dividerà tra i suoi figli i beni che possiede, non potrà dare il diritto di primogenito al figlio dell'amata, preferendolo al figlio dell'odiosa, che è il primogenito;	16 and if he wishes to divide his substance among his sons: he cannot make the son of the beloved wife the firstborn, and so prefer him before the son of the hated wife.
17 ma riconoscerà come primogenito il figlio dell'odiosa, dandogli il doppio di quello che possiede; poiché egli è la primizia del suo vigore e a lui appartiene il diritto di primogenitura.	17 Instead, he shall acknowledge the son of the hated wife as the firstborn, and he shall give to him a double portion of all that he has. For he is the first among his children, and the rights of the firstborn are owed to him.
18 Se un uomo avrà un figlio testardo e ribelle che non obbedisce alla voce né di suo padre né di sua madre e, benché l'abbiano castigato, non dà loro retta,	18 If a man produces a disobedient and reckless son, who will not listen to the orders of his father or mother, and, having been corrected, shows contempt for obedience:
19 suo padre e sua madre lo prenderanno e lo condurranno dagli anziani della città, alla porta del luogo dove abita,	19 they shall take him and lead him to the elders of the city and to the gate of judgment.
20 e diranno agli anziani della città: Questo nostro figlio è testardo e ribelle; non vuole obbedire alla nostra voce, è uno sfrenato e un bevitore.	20 And they shall say to them: ‘This our son is reckless and disobedient. He shows contempt when listening to our admonitions. He occupies himself with carousing, and self-indulgence, and feasting.’
21 Allora tutti gli uomini della sua città lo lapideranno ed egli morirà; così estirperai da te il male e tutto Israele lo saprà e avrà timore.	21 Then the people of the city shall stone him to death. And he shall die, so that you may take away the evil from your midst. And so may all of Israel, upon hearing it, be very afraid.
22 Se un uomo avrà commesso un delitto degno di morte e tu l'avrai messo a morte e appeso a un albero,	22 When a man will have sinned in a matter which is punished by death, and, having been judged unto death, he has been hanged on a gallows:
23 il suo cadavere non dovrà rimanere tutta la notte sull'albero, ma lo seppellirai lo stesso giorno, perché l'appeso è una maledizione di Dio e tu non contaminerai il paese che il Signore tuo Dio ti dà in eredità.	23 his corpse shall not remain on the tree. Instead, he shall be buried on the same day. For he who hangs from a tree has been cursed by God, and you shall not defile your land, which the Lord your God will give to you as a possession.”
