1 Allora cambiammo direzione e partimmo per il deserto verso il Mare Rosso, come il Signore mi aveva detto, e girammo intorno al monte Seir per lungo tempo.	1 "When we did turn and proceed into the desert on the Red Sea road, as the LORD had commanded me, we circled around the highlands of Seir for a long time.
2 Il Signore mi disse:	2 Finally the LORD said to me,
3 Avete girato abbastanza intorno a questa montagna; volgetevi verso settentrione.	3 'You have wandered round these highlands long enough; turn and go north.
4 Da' quest'ordine al popolo: Voi state per passare i confini dei figli di Esaù, vostri fratelli, che dimorano in Seir; essi avranno paura di voi; state bene in guardia:	4 Give this order to the people: You are now about to pass through the territory of your kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. Though they are afraid of you, be very careful
5 non muovete loro guerra, perché del loro paese io non vi darò neppure quanto ne può calcare la pianta di un piede; infatti ho dato il monte di Seir in proprietà a Esaù.	5 not to come in conflict with them, for I will not give you so much as a foot of their land, since I have already given Esau possession of the highlands of Seir.
6 Comprerete da loro con denaro le vettovaglie che mangerete e comprerete da loro con denaro anche l'acqua da bere.	6 You shall purchase from them with silver the food you eat and the well water you drink.
7 Perché il Signore tuo Dio ti ha benedetto in ogni lavoro delle tue mani, ti ha seguito nel tuo viaggio attraverso questo grande deserto; il Signore tuo Dio è stato con te in questi quaranta anni e non ti è mancato nulla.	7 The LORD, your God, has blessed you in all your undertakings; he has been concerned about your journey through this vast desert. It is now forty years that he has been with you, and you have never been in want.'
8 Allora passammo oltre i nostri fratelli, i figli di Esaù, che abitano in Seir, lungo la via dell'Araba, per Elat ed Ezion-Gheber. Poi ci voltammo e avanzammo in direzione del deserto di Moab.	8 "Then we left behind us the Arabah route, Elath, Ezion-geber, and Seir, where our kinsmen, the descendants of Esau, live; and we went on toward the desert of Moab.
9 Il Signore mi disse: Non attaccare Moab e non gli muovere guerra, perché io non ti darò nulla da possedere nel suo paese; infatti ho dato Ar ai figli di Lot, come loro proprietà.	9 And the LORD said to me, 'Do not show hostility to the Moabites or engage them in battle, for I will not give you possession of any of their land, since I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their own.
10 Prima vi abitavano gli Emim: popolo grande, numeroso, alto di statura come gli Anakiti.	10 (Formerly the Emim lived there, a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim;
11 Erano anch'essi considerati Refaim come gli Anakiti; ma i Moabiti li chiamavano Emim.	11 like them they were considered Rephaim. It was the Moabites who called them Emim.
12 Anche Seir era prima abitata dagli Hurriti, ma i figli di Esaù li scacciarono, li distrussero e si stabilirono al posto loro, come ha fatto Israele nel paese che possiede e che il Signore gli ha dato.	12 In Seir, however, the former inhabitants were the Horites; the descendants of Esau dispossessed them, clearing them out of the way and taking their place, just as the Israelites have done in the land of their heritage which the LORD has given them.)
13 Ora alzatevi e passate il torrente Zered! E attraversammo il torrente Zered.	13 Get ready, then, to cross the Wadi Zered.' So we crossed it.
14 La durata del nostro cammino, da Kades-Barnea al passaggio del torrente Zered, fu di trentotto anni, finché tutta quella generazione di uomini atti alla guerra scomparve dall'accampamento, come il Signore aveva loro giurato.	14 Thirty-eight years had elapsed between our departure from Kadesh-barnea and that crossing; in the meantime the whole generation of soldiers had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn they should.
15 Anche la mano del Signore era stata contro di loro, per sterminarli dall'accampamento finché fossero annientati.	15 For it was the LORD'S hand that was against them, till he wiped them out of the camp completely.
16 Quando tutti quegli uomini atti alla guerra furono passati nel numero dei morti,	16 "When at length death had put an end to all the soldiers among the people,
17 il Signore mi disse:	17 the LORD said to me,
18 Oggi tu stai per passare i confini di Moab, ad Ar, e ti avvicinerai agli Ammoniti.	18 'You are now about to leave Ar and the territory of Moab behind.
19 Non li attaccare e non muover loro guerra, perché io non ti darò nessun possesso nel paese degli Ammoniti; infatti l'ho dato in proprietà ai figli di Lot.	19 As you come opposite the Ammonites, do not show hostility or come in conflict with them, for I will not give you possession of any land of the Ammonites, since I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their own.
20 Anche questo paese era reputato paese di Refaim: prima vi abitavano i Refaim e gli Ammoniti li chiamavano Zanzummim:	20 (This also was considered a country of the Rephaim from its former inhabitants, whom the Ammonites called Zamzummim,
21 popolo grande, numeroso, alto di statura come gli Anakiti; ma il Signore li aveva distrutti davanti agli Ammoniti, che li avevano scacciati e si erano stabiliti al loro posto.	21 a people strong and numerous and tall like the Anakim. But these, too, the LORD cleared out of the way for the Ammonites, who ousted them and took their place.
22 Così il Signore aveva fatto per i figli di Esaù che abitano in Seir, quando distrusse gli Hurriti davanti a loro; essi li scacciarono e si stabilirono al loro posto e vi sono rimasti fino ad oggi.	22 He had done the same for the descendants of Esau, who dwell in Seir, by clearing the Horites out of their way, so that the descendants of Esau have taken their place down to the present.
23 Anche gli Avviti, che dimoravano in villaggi fino a Gaza, furono distrutti dai Kaftoriti, usciti da Kaftor, i quali si stabilirono al loro posto.	23 So also the Caphtorim, migrating from Caphtor, cleared away the Avvim, who once dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, and took their place.)
24 Suvvia, levate l'accampamento e passate la valle dell'Arnon; ecco io metto in tuo potere Sicon, l'Amorreo, re di Chesbon, e il suo paese; comincia a prenderne possesso e muovigli guerra.	24 "'Advance now across the Wadi Arnon. I now deliver into your hands Sihon, the Amorite king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin the occupation; engage him in battle.
25 Oggi comincerò a incutere paura e terrore di te ai popoli che sono sotto tutto il cielo, così che, all'udire la tua fama, tremeranno e saranno presi da spavento dinanzi a te.	25 This day I will begin to put a fear and dread of you into every nation under the heavens, so that at the mention of your name they will quake and tremble before you.'
26 Allora mandai messaggeri dal deserto di Kedemot a Sicon, re di Chesbon, con parole di pace, e gli feci dire:	26 "So I sent messengers from the desert of Kedemoth to Sihon, king of Heshbon, with this offer of peace:
27 Lasciami passare nel tuo paese; io camminerò per la strada maestra, senza volgermi né a destra né a sinistra.	27 'Let me pass through your country by the highway; I will go along it without turning aside to the right or to the left.
28 Tu mi venderai per denaro contante le vettovaglie che mangerò e mi darai per denaro contante l'acqua che berrò; permettimi solo il transito,	28 For the food I eat which you will supply, and for the water you give me to drink, you shall be paid in silver. Only let me march through,
29 come mi hanno permesso i figli di Esaù, che abitano in Seir, e i Moabiti che abitano in Ar, finché io abbia passato il Giordano per entrare nel paese che il Signore nostro Dio sta per darci.	29 as the descendants of Esau who dwell in Seir and the Moabites who dwell in Ar have done, until I cross the Jordan into the land which the LORD, our God, is about to give us.'
30 Ma Sicon, re di Chesbon, non ci volle lasciar passare nel suo paese, perché il Signore tuo Dio gli aveva reso inflessibile lo spirito e ostinato il cuore, per mettertelo nelle mani, come appunto è oggi.	30 But Sihon, king of Heshbon, refused to let us pass through his land, because the LORD, your God, made him stubborn in mind and obstinate in heart that he might deliver him up to you, as indeed he has now done.
31 Il Signore mi disse: Vedi, ho cominciato a mettere in tuo potere Sicon e il suo paese; da' inizio alla conquista impadronendoti del suo paese.	31 "Then the LORD said to me, 'Now that I have already begun to hand over to you Sihon and his land, begin the actual occupation.'
32 Allora Sicon uscì contro di noi con tutta la sua gente per darci battaglia a Iaaz.	32 So Sihon and all his people advanced against us to join battle at Jahaz;
33 Il Signore nostro Dio ce lo mise nelle mani e noi abbiamo sconfitto lui, i suoi figli e tutta la sua gente.	33 but since the LORD, our God, had delivered him to us, we defeated him and his sons and all his people.
34 In quel tempo prendemmo tutte le sue città e votammo allo sterminio ogni città, uomini, donne, bambini; non vi lasciammo alcun superstite.	34 At that time we seized all his cities and doomed them all, with their men, women and children; we left no survivor.
35 Soltanto asportammo per noi come preda il bestiame e le spoglie delle città che avevamo prese.	35 Our only booty was the livestock and the loot of the captured cities.
36 Da Aroer, che è sull'orlo della valle dell'Arnon, e dalla città che è sul torrente stesso, fino a Gàlaad, non ci fu città che fosse inaccessibile per noi: il Signore nostro Dio le mise tutte in nostro potere.	36 From Aroer on the edge of the Wadi Arnon and from the city in the wadi itself, as far as Gilead, no city was too well fortified for us to whom the LORD had delivered them up.
37 Ma non ti avvicinasti al paese degli Ammoniti, a tutta la riva dal torrente Iabbok, alle città delle montagne, a tutti i luoghi che il Signore nostro Dio ci aveva proibito di attaccare.	37 However, in obedience to the command of the LORD, our God, you did not encroach upon any of the Ammonite land, neither the region bordering on the Wadi Jabbok, nor the cities of the highlands.
