BIBBIA CEI 1974	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Queste sono le parole che Mosè rivolse a tutto Israele oltre il Giordano, nel deserto, nella valle dell'Araba, di fronte a Suf, tra Paran, Tofel, Laban, Cazerot e Di-Zaab.	1 These are the words which Moses addressed to al Israel beyond the Jordan, in the desert, in theArabah facing Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Dizahab.
2 Vi sono undici giornate dall'Oreb, per la via del monte Seir, fino a Kades-Barnea.	2 It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-Barnea.
3 Nel quarantesimo anno, l'undicesimo mese, il primo giorno del mese, Mosè parlò agli Israeliti, secondo quanto il Signore gli aveva ordinato di dir loro.	3 It was in the fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, that Moses told the Israeliteseverything that Yahweh had ordered him to tel them.
4 Dopo aver sconfitto Sicon, re degli Amorrei, che abitava in Chesbon, e Og, re di Basan, che abitava in Astarot e in Edrei,	4 He had defeated Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who livedat Ashtaroth and Edrei.
5 oltre il Giordano, nel paese di Moab, Mosè cominciò a spiegare questa legge:	5 There, in Moab beyond the Jordan, Moses resolved to expound this Law. He said:
6 "Il Signore nostro Dio ci ha parlato sull'Oreb e ci ha detto: Avete dimorato abbastanza su questa montagna;	6 'Yahweh our God said to us at Horeb, "You have stayed long enough at this mountain.
7 voltatevi, levate l'accampamento e andate verso le montagne degli Amorrei e in tutte le regioni vicine: la valle dell'Araba, le montagne, la Sefela, il Negheb, la costa del mare, nel paese dei Cananei e nel Libano, fino al grande fiume, il fiume Eufrate.	7 Move on, continue your journey, go to the highlands of the Amorites, to al those who live in the Arabah,in the highlands, in the lowlands, in the Negeb and in the coastland; go into Canaan and to Lebanon as far asthe great River Euphrates.
8 Ecco, io vi ho posto il paese dinanzi; entrate, prendete in possesso il paese che il Signore ha giurato di dare ai vostri padri, Abramo, Isacco e Giacobbe, e alla loro stirpe dopo di essi.	8 Look, that is the country I have given you; go and take possession of the country that Yahweh promisedon oath to give to your ancestors, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and to their descendants after them."
9 In quel tempo io vi ho parlato e vi ho detto: Io non posso da solo sostenere il carico del popolo.	9 'At the same time, I told you, "I cannot be responsible for you by myself.
10 Il Signore vostro Dio vi ha moltiplicati ed ecco oggi siete numerosi come le stelle del cielo.	10 Yahweh your God has increased your numbers, until you are now as numerous as the stars ofheaven.
11 Il Signore, Dio dei vostri padri, vi aumenti anche mille volte di più e vi benedica come vi ha promesso di fare.	11 And Yahweh your God is going to increase you a thousand times more, and bless you as he haspromised you.
12 Ma come posso io da solo portare il vostro peso, il vostro carico e le vostre liti?	12 So how can I cope by myself with the bitter burden that you are, and with your bickering?
13 Sceglietevi nelle vostre tribù uomini saggi, intelligenti e stimati, e io li costituirò vostri capi.	13 From each of your tribes pick wise, shrewd and experienced men for me to make your leaders."
14 Voi mi rispondeste: Va bene ciò che proponi di fare.	14 You replied, "Your plan is good."
15 Allora presi i capi delle vostre tribù, uomini saggi e stimati, e li stabilii sopra di voi come capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine, capi di decine, e come scribi nelle vostre tribù.	15 So I took your tribal leaders, wise, experienced men, and appointed them to lead you, as captains ofthousands, hundreds, fifties, tens, and as scribes for your tribes.
16 In quel tempo diedi quest'ordine ai vostri giudici: Ascoltate le cause dei vostri fratelli e giudicate con giustizia le questioni che uno può avere con il fratello o con lo straniero che sta presso di lui.	16 At that same time I told your judges, "You must give your brothers a fair hearing and see justice donebetween one person and his brother or the foreigner living with him.
17 Nei vostri giudizi non avrete riguardi personali, darete ascolto al piccolo come al grande; non temerete alcun uomo, poiché il giudizio appartiene a Dio; le cause troppo difficili per voi le presenterete a me e io le ascolterò.	17 You must be impartial in judgement and give an equal hearing to small and great alike. Do not beafraid of any human person, for the verdict is God's. Should a case be too difficult, bring it for me to hear.
18 In quel tempo io vi ordinai tutte le cose che dovevate fare.	18 And on that occasion I gave you instructions about everything you were to do."
19 Poi partimmo dall'Oreb e attraversammo tutto quel deserto grande e spaventoso che avete visto, dirigendoci verso le montagne degli Amorrei, come il Signore nostro Dio ci aveva ordinato di fare, e giungemmo a Kades-Barnea.	19 'So, as Yahweh our God had ordered, we left Horeb and made our way through that vast and terribledesert, which you saw on the way to the Amorite highlands, and arrived at Kadesh-Barnea.
20 Allora vi dissi: Siete arrivati presso la montagna degli Amorrei, che il Signore nostro Dio sta per darci.	20 I then said, "You have now reached the Amorite highlands, which Yahweh our God has given us.
21 Ecco il Signore tuo Dio ti ha posto il paese dinanzi; entra, prendine possesso, come il Signore Dio dei tuoi padri ti ha detto; non temere e non ti scoraggiare!	21 Look, Yahweh your God has given you this country. March in, take possession of it as Yahweh, theGod of your ancestors, has said; do not be afraid or discouraged."
22 Voi vi accostaste a me tutti e diceste: Mandiamo uomini innanzi a noi, che esplorino il paese e ci riferiscano sul cammino per il quale noi dovremo salire e sulle città nelle quali dovremo entrare.	22 Then you al came to me and said, "Let us send men ahead of us to explore the country; they shalreport to us which way we ought to take and what towns we shal come to."
23 La proposta mi piacque e scelsi dodici uomini tra di voi, uno per tribù.	23 This seemed good advice to me and I selected twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.
24 Quelli si incamminarono, salirono verso i monti, giunsero alla valle di Escol ed esplorarono il paese.	24 These men made towards the highlands and went up into them; they reached the Val ey of Eshcol andreconnoitred it.
25 Presero con le mani i frutti del paese, ce li portarono e ci fecero questa relazione: È buono il paese che il Signore nostro Dio sta per darci.	25 They col ected some of the produce of the country and brought it down to us; and they made us thisreport, "Yahweh our God has given us a fine country."
26 Ma voi non voleste entrarvi e vi ribellaste all'ordine del Signore vostro Dio;	26 You, however, refused to go up there and rebelled against the voice of Yahweh your God.
27 mormoraste nelle vostre tende e diceste: Il Signore ci odia, per questo ci ha fatti uscire dal paese d'Egitto per darci in mano agli Amorrei e per distruggerci.	27 You muttered in your tents, saying, "Yahweh hates us, and that is why he has brought us out of Egypt,to put us into the Amorites' power and so destroy us.
28 Dove possiamo andare noi? I nostri fratelli ci hanno scoraggiati dicendo: Quella gente è più grande e più alta di noi; le città sono grandi e fortificate fino al cielo; abbiamo visto là perfino dei figli degli Anakiti.	28 What kind of place are we making for? Our brothers have discouraged us by saying that the peopleare stronger and tal er than we are, the cities immense, with wal s reaching to the sky. And we have seenAnakim there too."
29 Allora dissi a voi: Non spaventatevi e non abbiate paura di loro.	29 'And I said to you, "Do not take fright, do not be afraid of them.
30 Il Signore stesso vostro Dio, che vi precede, combatterà per voi, come ha fatto tante volte sotto gli occhi vostri in Egitto	30 Yahweh your God goes ahead of you and wil be fighting on your side, just as you saw him act inEgypt.
31 e come ha fatto nel deserto, dove hai visto come il Signore tuo Dio ti ha portato, come un uomo porta il proprio figlio, per tutto il cammino che avete fatto, finché siete arrivati qui.	31 You have seen him in the desert too: Yahweh your God continued to support you, as a man supportshis son, al along the road you followed until you arrived here."
32 Nonostante questo, non aveste fiducia nel Signore vostro Dio	32 But for al this, you put no faith in Yahweh your God,
33 che andava innanzi a voi nel cammino per cercarvi un luogo dove porre l'accampamento: di notte nel fuoco, per mostrarvi la via dove andare, e di giorno nella nube.	33 going ahead of you on the journey to find you a camping ground, by night in the fire to light your path,and in the cloud by day.
34 Il Signore udì le vostre parole, si adirò e giurò:	34 'Yahweh heard what you were saying and in his anger swore this oath,
35 Nessuno degli uomini di questa malvagia generazione vedrà il buon paese che ho giurato di dare ai vostri padri,	35 "Not one of these people, this perverse generation, will see the fine country I swore to give yourancestors,
36 se non Caleb, figlio di Iefunne. Egli lo vedrà e a lui e ai suoi figli darò la terra che ha calcato, perché ha pienamente seguito il Signore.	36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He wil see it. To him and to his children I shal give the land he hasset foot on, for he has been perfectly obedient to Yahweh."
37 Anche contro di me si adirò il Signore, per causa vostra, e disse: Neanche tu vi entrerai,	37 Yahweh was angry with me too, because of you. "You wil not go in either," he said.
38 ma vi entrerà Giosuè, figlio di Nun, che sta al tuo servizio; incoraggialo, perché egli metterà Israele in possesso di questo paese.	38 "Your assistant, Joshua son of Nun, will be the one to enter. Encourage him, since he is to bring Israelinto possession of the country.
39 E i vostri bambini, dei quali avete detto: Diventeranno oggetto di preda! e i vostri figli, che oggi non conoscono né il bene né il male, essi vi entreranno; a loro lo darò ed essi lo possiederanno.	39 And your little ones too, who, you said, would be seized as booty, these children of yours who do notyet know good from evil, they wil go in; I shall give it to them and they wil own it.
40 Ma voi volgetevi indietro e incamminatevi verso il deserto, in direzione del Mare Rosso.	40 But, as regards yourselves, turn round, go back into the desert, towards the Sea of Suph."
41 Allora voi mi rispondeste: Abbiamo peccato contro il Signore! Entreremo e combatteremo in tutto come il Signore nostro Dio ci ha ordinato. Ognuno di voi cinse le armi e presumeste di salire verso la montagna.	41 'In reply, you then said to me, "We have sinned against Yahweh our God. We shall go up and fight justas Yahweh our God has ordered us." And each one of you buckled on his arms and equipped himself to marchup into the highlands.
42 Il Signore mi disse: Ordina loro: Non salite e non combattete, perché io non sono in mezzo a voi; voi sarete sconfitti davanti ai vostri nemici.	42 But Yahweh said to me, "Tel them this: Do not go up and fight. I am not with you. Do not letyourselves be defeated by your enemies."
43 Io ve lo dissi, ma voi non mi ascoltaste; anzi vi ribellaste all'ordine del Signore, foste presuntuosi e osaste salire verso i monti.	43 So I told you, but you would not listen, and you rebel ed against the voice of Yahweh; presumptuouslyyou marched into the highlands.
44 Allora gli Amorrei, che abitano quella montagna, uscirono contro di voi, vi inseguirono come fanno le api e vi batterono in Seir fino a Corma.	44 The Amorites, who live in that country of hil s, came swarming out against you like bees, pursued youand beat you from Seir to Hormah.
45 Voi tornaste e piangeste davanti al Signore; ma il Signore non diede ascolto alla vostra voce e non vi porse l'orecchio.	45 On your return, you wept in Yahweh's presence, but he would not listen to your cries or pay attention.
46 Così rimaneste in Kades molti giorni, per tutto il tempo in cui vi siete rimasti.	46 That was why you had to stay at Kadesh as long as you did.'
