BIBBIA CEI 1974	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Io Nabucodònosor ero tranquillo in casa e felice nella reggia,	1 'I, Nebuchadnezzar, was living comfortably in my house, prosperously in my palace.
2 quando ebbi un sogno che mi spaventò. Le immaginazioni che mi vennero mentre ero nel mio letto e le visioni che mi passarono per la mente mi turbarono.	2 I had a dream; it appal ed me. Dread assailed me as I lay in bed; the visions that passed through myhead tormented me.
3 Feci un decreto con cui ordinavo che tutti i saggi di Babilonia fossero condotti davanti a me, per farmi conoscere la spiegazione del sogno.	3 So I decreed that all the sages of Babylon be summoned to explain to me what the dream meant.
4 Allora vennero i maghi, gli astrologi, i caldei e gli indovini, ai quali esposi il sogno, ma non me ne potevano dare la spiegazione.	4 Magicians, soothsayers, Chaldaeans and exorcists came, and I told them what I had dreamt, but theycould not interpret it for me.
5 Infine mi si presentò Daniele, chiamato Baltazzàr dal nome del mio dio, un uomo in cui è lo spirito degli dèi santi, e gli raccontai il sogno	5 Daniel, renamed Belteshazzar after my own god, and in whom the spirit of the holy gods resides, thencame into my presence. I told him my dream:
6 dicendo: "Baltazzàr, principe dei maghi, poiché io so che lo spirito degli dèi santi è in te e che nessun segreto ti è difficile, ecco le visioni che ho avuto in sogno: tu dammene la spiegazione".	6 ' "Belteshazzar, chief of magicians," I said, "I know that the spirit of the holy gods resides in you and that no mystery puts you at a loss. This is the dream I have had; tel me what it means.
7 Le visioni che mi passarono per la mente, mentre stavo a letto, erano queste: Io stavo guardando ed ecco un albero di grande altezza in mezzo alla terra.	7 ' "The visions that passed through my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw a tree in the middle of theworld; it was very tal .
8 Quell'albero era grande, robusto, la sua cima giungeva al cielo e si poteva vedere fin dall'estremità della terra.	8 The tree grew tal er and stronger, until its top reached the sky and it could be seen from the very endsof the earth.
9 I suoi rami erano belli e i suoi frutti abbondanti e vi era in esso da mangiare per tutti. Le bestie della terra si riparavano alla sua ombra e gli uccelli del cielo facevano il nido fra i suoi rami; di lui si nutriva ogni vivente.	9 Its foliage was beautiful, its fruit abundant, in it was food for al . For the wild animals it provided shade,the birds of heaven nested in its branches, al living creatures found their food on it.
10 Mentre nel mio letto stavo osservando le visioni che mi passavano per la mente, ecco un vigilante, un santo, scese dal cielo	10 ' "I watched the visions passing through my head as I lay in bed: Next, a Watchful One, a holy one,came down from heaven.
11 e gridò a voce alta: "Tagliate l'albero e stroncate i suoi rami: scuotete le foglie, disperdetene i frutti: fuggano le bestie di sotto e gli uccelli dai suoi rami.	11 At the top of his voice he shouted: Cut the tree down, lop off its branches, strip off its leaves, throwaway its fruit; let the animals flee from its shelter and the birds from its branches.
12 Lasciate però nella terra il ceppo con le radici, legato con catene di ferro e di bronzo fra l'erba della campagna. Sia bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo e la sua sorte sia insieme con le bestie sui prati.	12 But leave the stump with its roots in the ground, bound with hoops of iron and bronze, in the grass ofthe countryside. Let it be drenched by the dew of heaven and have its lot with the animals, eating grass!
13 Si muti il suo cuore e invece di un cuore umano gli sia dato un cuore di bestia: sette tempi passeranno su di lui.	13 Let it cease to have a human heart, and be given the heart of a beast, and seven times shal passover him!
14 Così è deciso per sentenza dei vigilanti e secondo la parola dei santi. Così i viventi sappiano che l'Altissimo domina sul regno degli uomini e che egli lo può dare a chi vuole e insediarvi anche il più piccolo degli uomini".	14 Such is the sentence proclaimed by the Watchers, the verdict announced by the holy ones- so thatevery living thing may learn that the Most High rules over human sovereignty; he confers it on whom he pleases,and raises the lowest of humankind.
15 Questo è il sogno, che io, re Nabucodònosor, ho fatto. Ora tu, Baltazzàr, dammene la spiegazione. Tu puoi darmela, perché, mentre fra tutti i saggi del mio regno nessuno me ne spiega il significato, in te è lo spirito degli dèi santi.	15 ' "This was the dream I had-I, Nebuchadnezzar the king. Now it is for you, Belteshazzar, to pronounceon its meaning, since not one of the sages in my kingdom has been able to interpret it for me; you, however, cando so, since the spirit of the holy gods resides in you." '
16 Allora Daniele, chiamato Baltazzàr, rimase per qualche tempo confuso e turbato dai suoi pensieri. Ma il re gli si rivolse: "Baltazzàr, il sogno non ti turbi e neppure la sua spiegazione". Rispose Baltazzàr: "Signor mio, valga il sogno per i tuoi nemici e la sua spiegazione per i tuoi avversari.	16 Daniel, known as Belteshazzar, was confused for a time and upset. The king said, 'Belteshazzar, donot be upset at the dream and its meaning.' Belteshazzar answered, 'My lord, may the dream apply to those whohate you, and its meaning to your foes!
17 L'albero che tu hai visto, grande e robusto, la cui cima giungeva fino al cielo e si poteva vedere da tutta la terra	17 The tree you saw, so large and strong and tal that it reached the sky and could be seen throughoutthe world,
18 e le cui foglie erano belle e i suoi frutti abbondanti e in cui c'era da mangiare per tutti e sotto il quale dimoravano le bestie della terra e sui cui rami facevano il nido gli uccelli del cielo,	18 the tree with beautiful foliage and abundant fruit, with food for al in it, providing shade for the wildanimals, with the birds of heaven nesting in its branches:
19 sei tu, re, che sei diventato grande e forte; la tua grandezza è cresciuta, è giunta al cielo e il tuo dominio si è esteso sino ai confini della terra.	19 that tree is yourself, Your Majesty, for you have grown great and strong; your stature is now so greatthat it reaches the sky, and your empire extends to the ends of the earth.
20 Che il re abbia visto un vigilante, un santo che scendeva dal cielo e diceva: Tagliate l'albero, spezzatelo, però lasciate nella terra il ceppo delle sue radici legato con catene di ferro e di bronzo fra l'erba della campagna e sia bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo e abbia sorte comune con le bestie della terra, finché sette tempi siano passati su di lui,	20 'And the Watchful One seen by the king, the holy one coming down from heaven and saying, "Cut thetree down and destroy it, but leave stump and roots in the ground, bound with hoops of iron and bronze in thegrass of the countryside; let it be drenched by the dew and have its lot with the wild animals until seven timeshave passed over it":
21 questa, o re, ne è la spiegazione e questo è il decreto dell'Altissimo, che deve essere eseguito sopra il re, mio signore:	21 the meaning of this, Your Majesty, the verdict of the Most High passed on my lord the king, is this:
22 Tu sarai cacciato dal consorzio umano e la tua dimora sarà con le bestie della terra; ti pascerai d'erba come i buoi e sarai bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo; sette tempi passeranno su di te, finché tu riconosca che l'Altissimo domina sul regno degli uomini e che egli lo da' a chi vuole.	22 You wil be driven from human society and wil make your home with the wild animals, you will feed ongrass, as oxen do, you wil be drenched by the dew of heaven; seven times will pass over you until you havelearnt that the Most High rules over human sovereignty and confers it on whom he pleases.
23 L'ordine che è stato dato di lasciare il ceppo con le radici dell'albero significa che il tuo regno ti sarà ristabilito, quando avrai riconosciuto che al Cielo appartiene il dominio.	23 'And the order, "Leave the stump and roots of the tree", means that your kingdom wil be kept for youuntil you come to understand that Heaven rules all.
24 Perciò, re, accetta il mio consiglio: sconta i tuoi peccati con l'elemosina e le tue iniquità con atti di misericordia verso gli afflitti, perché tu possa godere lunga prosperità".	24 May it please the king to accept my advice: by upright actions break with your sins, break with yourcrimes by showing mercy to the poor, and so live long and peacefully.'
25 Tutte queste cose avvennero al re Nabucodònosor.	25 This al happened to King Nebuchadnezzar.
26 Dodici mesi dopo, passeggiando sopra la terrazza della reggia di Babilonia,	26 At the end of twelve months, while strol ing on the roof of the royal palace in Babylon,
27 il re prese a dire: "Non è questa la grande Babilonia che io ho costruito come reggia per la gloria della mia maestà, con la forza della mia potenza?".	27 the king was saying, 'Great Babylon! Was it not built by me as a royal residence, by the force of mymight and for the majesty of my glory?'
28 Queste parole erano ancora sulle labbra del re, quando una voce venne dal cielo: "A te io parlo, re Nabucodònosor: il regno ti è tolto!	28 The words were not out of his mouth when a voice came down from heaven: 'Of you, KingNebuchadnezzar, it is decreed: the empire has been taken from you,
29 Sarai cacciato dal consorzio umano e la tua dimora sarà con le bestie della terra; ti pascerai d'erba come i buoi e passeranno sette tempi su di te, finché tu riconosca che l'Altissimo domina sul regno degli uomini e che egli lo da' a chi vuole".	29 you wil be driven from human society and wil make your home with the wild animals; you wil feed ongrass, as oxen do, and seven times wil pass over you until you have learnt that the Most High rules over humansovereignty and gives it to whom he pleases.'
30 In quel momento stesso si adempì la parola sopra Nabucodònosor. Egli fu cacciato dal consorzio umano, mangiò l'erba come i buoi e il suo corpo fu bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo: il pelo gli crebbe come le penne alle aquile e le unghie come agli uccelli.	30 The words were immediately fulfilled: Nebuchadnezzar was driven from human society and ate grassas oxen do; he was drenched by the dew of heaven; his hair grew like an eagle's feathers, and his nails becamelike a bird's talons.
31 "Ma finito quel tempo, io Nabucodònosor alzai gli occhi al cielo e la ragione tornò in me e benedissi l'Altissimo; lodai e glorificai colui che vive in eterno, la cui potenza è potenza eterna e il cui regno è di generazione in generazione.	31 'When the time was over, I, Nebuchad- nezzar, raised my eyes to heaven: my reason returned. And Iblessed the Most High, praising and glorifying him who lives for ever, for his empire is an everlasting empire, hiskingship endures, age after age.
32 Tutti gli abitanti della terra sono, davanti a lui, come un nulla; egli dispone come gli piace delle schiere del cielo e degli abitanti della terra. Nessuno può fermargli la mano e dirgli: Che cosa fai?	32 Al who dwel on earth count for nothing; as he thinks fit, he disposes the army of heaven and thosewho dwel on earth. No one can arrest his hand or ask him, "What have you done?"
33 In quel tempo tornò in me la conoscenza e con la gloria del regno mi fu restituita la mia maestà e il mio splendore: i miei ministri e i miei prìncipi mi ricercarono e io fui ristabilito nel mio regno e mi fu concesso un potere anche più grande.	33 'At that moment my reason returned and, for the honour of my royal state, my glory and splendourreturned too. My counsel ors and noblemen acclaimed me; I was restored to my throne, and to my pastgreatness even more was added.
34 Ora io, Nabucodònosor, lodo, esalto e glorifico il Re del cielo: tutte le sue opere sono verità e le sue vie giustizia; egli può umiliare coloro che camminano nella superbia".	34 And now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, extol and glorify the King of heaven, al of whose deeds are true,al of whose ways are right, and who can humble those who walk in pride.'
