BIBBIA CEI 1974	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Il re Astiage si riunì ai suoi padri e gli succedette nel regno Ciro il Persiano.	1 When King Astyages joined his ancestors, Cyrus of Persia succeeded him.
2 Ora Daniele viveva accanto al re, ed era il più onorato di tutti gli amici del re.	2 Daniel was very close to the king, who respected him more than any of his other friends.
3 I Babilonesi avevano un idolo chiamato Bel, al quale offrivano ogni giorno dodici sacchi di fior di farina, quaranta pecore e sei barili di vino.	3 Now, in Babylon there was an idol cal ed Bel, to which twelve bushels of the finest flour, forty sheepand six measures of wine were offered every day.
4 Anche il re venerava questo idolo e andava ogni giorno ad adorarlo. Daniele però adorava il suo Dio e perciò il re gli disse: "Perché non adori Bel?".	4 The king venerated this idol and used to go and worship it every day. Daniel, however, worshipped hisown God.
5 Daniele rispose: "Io non adoro idoli fatti da mani d'uomo, ma soltanto il Dio vivo che ha fatto il cielo e la terra e che è signore di ogni essere vivente".	5 'Why do you not worship Bel?' the king asked Daniel. 'I do not worship idols made by human hand,'Daniel replied, 'I worship the living God who made heaven and earth and who is lord over al living creatures.'
6 "Non credi tu - aggiunse il re - che Bel sia un dio vivo? Non vedi quanto beve e mangia ogni giorno?".	6 'Do you not believe, then,' said the king, 'that Bel is a living god? Can you not see how much he eatsand drinks each day?'
7 Rispose Daniele ridendo: "Non t'ingannare, o re: quell'idolo di dentro è d'argilla e di fuori è di bronzo e non ha mai mangiato né bevuto".	7 Daniel laughed. 'Your Majesty,' he said, 'do not be taken in; he is clay inside, and bronze outside, andhas never eaten or drunk anything.'
8 Il re s'indignò e convocati i sacerdoti di Bel, disse loro: "Se voi non mi dite chi è che mangia tutto questo cibo, morirete; se invece mi proverete che è Bel che lo mangia, morirà Daniele, perché ha insultato Bel".	8 This made the king angry; he summoned his priests, 'Tel me who eats all this food,' he said, 'or die.Prove to me that Bel real y eats it, and I wil have Daniel put to death for blaspheming him.'
9 Daniele disse al re: "Sia fatto come tu hai detto". I sacerdoti di Bel erano settanta, senza contare le mogli e i figli.	9 Daniel said to the king, 'Let it be as you say.'
10 Il re si recò insieme con Daniele al tempio di Bel	10 There were seventy of these priests, to say nothing of their wives and children. The king went to thetemple of Bel, taking Daniel with him.
11 e i sacerdoti di Bel gli dissero: "Ecco, noi usciamo di qui e tu, re, disponi le vivande e mesci il vino temperato; poi chiudi la porta e sigillala con il tuo anello. Se domani mattina, venendo, tu riscontrerai che tutto non è stato mangiato da Bel, moriremo noi, altrimenti morirà Daniele che ci ha calunniati".	11 The priests of Bel said to him, 'We shal now go out, and you, Your Majesty, wil lay out the meal andmix the wine and set it out. Then, lock the door and seal it with your personal seal. If, when you return in themorning, you do not find that everything has been eaten by Bel, let us be put to death; otherwise let Daniel, thatslanderer!'
12 Essi però non se ne preoccuparono perché avevano praticato un passaggio segreto sotto la tavola per il quale passavano abitualmente e consumavano tutto.	12 They were thinking -- hence their confidence -- of a secret entrance which they had made under thetable, and by which they came in regularly and took the offerings away.
13 Dopo che essi se ne furono andati, il re fece porre i cibi davanti a Bel:	13 When the priests had gone and the king had set out the food for Bel,
14 Daniele ordinò ai servi del re di portare un po' di cenere e la sparsero su tutto il pavimento del tempio alla presenza soltanto del re; poi uscirono, chiusero la porta, la sigillarono con l'anello del re e se ne andarono.	14 Daniel made his servants bring ashes and spread them all over the temple floor, with no otherwitness than the king. They then left the building, shut the door and, sealing it with the king's seal, went away.
15 I sacerdoti vennero di notte, secondo il loro consueto, con le mogli, i figli, e mangiarono e bevvero tutto.	15 That night, as usual, the priests came with their wives and children; they ate and drank everything.
16 Di buon mattino il re si alzò, come anche Daniele.	16 The king was up very early next morning, and Daniel with him.
17 Il re domandò: "Sono intatti i sigilli, Daniele?". "Intatti, re" rispose.	17 'Daniel,' said the king, 'are the seals intact?' 'They are intact, Your Majesty,' he replied.
18 Aperta la porta, il re guardò la tavola ed esclamò: "Tu sei grande, Bel, e nessun inganno è in te!".	18 The king then opened the door and, taking one look at the table, exclaimed, 'You are great, O Bel!There is no deception in you!'
19 Daniele sorrise e, trattenendo il re perché non entrasse, disse: "Guarda il pavimento ed esamina di chi sono quelle orme".	19 But Daniel laughed; and, restraining the king from going in any further, he said, 'Look at the floor andtake note whose footmarks these are!'
20 Il re disse: "Vedo orme d'uomini, di donne e di ragazzi!".	20 'I can see the footmarks of men, of women and of children,' said the king,
21 Acceso d'ira, fece arrestare i sacerdoti con le mogli e i figli; gli furono mostrate le porte segrete per le quali entravano a consumare quanto si trovava sulla tavola.	21 and angrily ordered the priests to be arrested, with their wives and children. They then showed himthe secret door through which they used to come and take what was on the table.
22 Quindi il re li fece mettere a morte, consegnò Bel in potere di Daniele che lo distrusse insieme con il tempio.	22 The king had them put to death and handed Bel over to Daniel who destroyed both the idol and itstemple.
23 Vi era un gran drago e i Babilonesi lo veneravano.	23 There was a great dragon which the Babylonians worshipped too.
24 Il re disse a Daniele: "Non potrai dire che questo non è un dio vivente; adoralo, dunque".	24 The king said to Daniel, 'Are you going to tel me that this is made of bronze? Look, it is alive; it eatsand drinks; you cannot deny that this is a living god; worship it, then.'
25 Daniele rispose: "Io adoro il Signore mio Dio, perché egli è il Dio vivente; se tu me lo permetti, o re, io, senza spada e senza bastone, ucciderò il drago".	25 Daniel replied, 'I wil worship the Lord my God; he is the living God. With your permission, YourMajesty, without using either sword or club, I shal kil this dragon.'
26 Soggiunse il re: "Te lo permetto".	26 'You have my permission,' said the king.
27 Daniele prese allora pece, grasso e peli e li fece cuocere insieme, poi ne preparò focacce e le gettò in bocca al drago che le inghiottì e scoppiò; quindi soggiunse: "Ecco che cosa adoravate!".	27 Whereupon, Daniel took some pitch, some fat and some hair and boiled them up together, rol ed themixture into bal s and fed them to the dragon; the dragon swallowed them and burst. Daniel said, 'Now look atthe sort of thing you worship!'
28 Quando i Babilonesi lo seppero, ne furono molto indignati e insorsero contro il re, dicendo: "Il re è diventato Giudeo: ha distrutto Bel, ha ucciso il drago, ha messo a morte i sacerdoti".	28 The Babylonians were furious when they heard about this and rose against the king. 'The king hasturned Jew,' they said, 'he has al owed Bel to be overthrown, and the dragon to be kil ed, and he has put thepriests to death.'
29 Andarono da lui dicendo: "Consegnaci Daniele, altrimenti uccidiamo te e la tua famiglia!".	29 So they went to the king and said, 'Hand Daniel over to us or else we shall kil you and your family.'
30 Quando il re vide che lo assalivano con violenza, costretto dalla necessità consegnò loro Daniele.	30 They pressed him so hard that the king found himself forced to hand Daniel over to them.
31 Ed essi lo gettarono nella fossa dei leoni, dove rimase sei giorni.	31 They threw Daniel into the lion pit, and there he stayed for six days.
32 Nella fossa vi erano sette leoni, ai quali venivano dati ogni giorno due cadaveri e due pecore: ma quella volta non fu dato loro niente perché divorassero Daniele.	32 In the pit were seven lions, which were given two human bodies and two sheep every day; but forthis period they were not given anything, to make sure they would eat Daniel.
33 Si trovava allora in Giudea il profeta Àbacuc il quale aveva fatto una minestra e spezzettato il pane in un recipiente e andava a portarlo nel campo ai mietitori.	33 Now, the prophet Habakkuk was in Judaea: he had been making a stew and breaking up bread intoa basket. He was on his way to the fields, taking this to the harvesters,
34 L'angelo del Signore gli disse: "Porta questo cibo a Daniele in Babilonia nella fossa dei leoni".	34 when the angel of the Lord spoke to him, 'Take the meal you are carrying to Babylon, and give it toDaniel in the lion pit.'
35 Ma Àbacuc rispose: "Signore, Babilonia non l'ho mai vista e la fossa non la conosco".	35 'Lord,' replied Habakkuk, 'I have not even seen Babylon and know nothing about this pit.'
36 Allora l'angelo del Signore lo prese per i capelli e con la velocità del vento lo trasportò in Babilonia e lo posò sull'orlo della fossa dei leoni.	36 The angel of the Lord took hold of his head and carried him off by the hair to Babylon where, with agreat blast of his breath, he set Habakkuk down on the edge of the pit.
37 Gridò Àbacuc: "Daniele, Daniele, prendi il cibo che Dio ti ha mandato".	37 'Daniel, Daniel,' Habakkuk shouted, 'take the meal that God has sent you.'
38 Daniele esclamò: "Dio, ti sei ricordato di me e non hai abbandonato coloro che ti amano".	38 And Daniel said, 'You have kept me in mind, O God; you have not deserted those who love you.'
39 Alzatosi, Daniele si mise a mangiare, mentre l'angelo di Dio riportava subito Àbacuc nel luogo di prima.	39 Rising to his feet, he ate the meal, while the angel of God carried Habakkuk back in a moment to hisown country.
40 Il settimo giorno il re andò per piangere Daniele e giunto alla fossa guardò e vide Daniele seduto.	40 On the seventh day, the king came to lament over Daniel; on reaching the pit he looked inside, andthere sat Daniel.
41 Allora esclamò ad alta voce: "Grande tu sei, Signore Dio di Daniele, e non c'è altro dio all'infuori di te!".	41 'You are great, O Lord, God of Daniel,' he exclaimed, 'there is no god but you!'
42 Poi fece uscire Daniele dalla fossa e vi fece gettare coloro che volevano la sua rovina ed essi furono subito divorati sotto i suoi occhi.	42 He then had Daniel released from the pit and the plotters of Daniel's ruin thrown in instead, wherethey were instantly eaten before his eyes.
