1 Infatti ho riflettuto su tutto questo e ho compreso che i giusti e i saggi e le loro azioni sono nelle mani di Dio. L'uomo non conosce né l'amore né l'odio; davanti a lui tutto è vanità.	1 All these things have I considered in my heart, that I might carefully understand them: there are just men and wise men, and their works are in the hand of God: and yet man knoweth not whether he be worthy of love, or hatred:
2 Vi è una sorte unica per tutti, per il giusto e l'empio, per il puro e l'impuro, per chi offre sacrifici e per chi non li offre, per il buono e per il malvagio, per chi giura e per chi teme di giurare.	2 But all things are kept uncertain for the time to come, because all things equally happen to the just and to the wicked, to the good and to the evil, to the clean and to the unclean, to him that offereth victims, and to him that despiseth sacrifices. As the good is, so also is the sinner: as the perjured, so he also that sweareth truth.
3 Questo è il male in tutto ciò che avviene sotto il sole: una medesima sorte tocca a tutti e anche il cuore degli uomini è pieno di male e la stoltezza alberga nel loro cuore mentre sono in vita, poi se ne vanno fra i morti.	3 This is a very great evil among all things that are done under the sun, that the same things happen to all men: whereby also the hearts of the children of men are filled with evil, and with contempt while they live, and afterwards they shall be brought down to hell.
4 Certo, finché si resta uniti alla società dei viventi c'è speranza: meglio un cane vivo che un leone morto.	4 There is no man that liveth always, or that hopeth for this: a living dog is better than a dead lion.
5 I vivi sanno che moriranno, ma i morti non sanno nulla; non c'è più salario per loro, perché il loro ricordo svanisce.	5 For the living know that they shall die, but the dead know nothing more, neither have they a reward any more: for the memory of them is forgotten.
6 Il loro amore, il loro odio e la loro invidia, tutto è ormai finito, non avranno più alcuna parte in tutto ciò che accade sotto il sole.	6 Their love also, and their hatred, and their envy are all perished, neither have they any part in this world, and in the work that is done under the sun.
7 Va', mangia con gioia il tuo pane, bevi il tuo vino con cuore lieto, perché Dio ha già gradito le tue opere.	7 Go then, and eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with gladness: because thy works please God.
8 In ogni tempo le tue vesti siano bianche e il profumo non manchi sul tuo capo.	8 At all times let thy garments be white, and let not oil depart from thy head.
9 Godi la vita con la sposa che ami per tutti i giorni della tua vita fugace, che Dio ti concede sotto il sole, perché questa è la tua sorte nella vita e nelle pene che soffri sotto il sole.	9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest, all the days of thy unsteady life, which are given to thee under the sun, all the time of thy vanity: for this is thy portion in life, and in thy labour wherewith thou labourest under the sun.
10 Tutto ciò che trovi da fare, fallo finché ne sei in grado, perché non ci sarà né attività, né ragione, né scienza, né sapienza giù negli inferi, dove stai per andare.	10 Whatsoever thy hand is able to do, do it earnestly: for neither work, nor reason, nor wisdom, nor knowledge shall be in hell, whither thou art hastening.
11 Ho visto anche sotto il sole che non è degli agili la corsa, né dei forti la guerra e neppure dei sapienti il pane e degli accorti la ricchezza e nemmeno degli intelligenti il favore, perché il tempo e il caso raggiungono tutti.	11 I turned me to another thing, and I saw that under the sun, the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the learned, nor favour to the skilful: but time and chance in all.
12 Infatti l'uomo non conosce neppure la sua ora: simile ai pesci che sono presi dalla rete fatale e agli uccelli presi al laccio, l'uomo è sorpreso dalla sventura che improvvisa si abbatte su di lui.	12 Man knoweth not his own end: but as fishes are taken with the hook, and as birds are caught with the snare, so men are taken in the evil time, when it shall suddenly come upon them.
13 Anche questo fatto ho visto sotto il sole e mi parve assai grave:	13 This wisdom also I have seen under the sun, and it seemed to me to be very great:
14 c'era una piccola città con pochi abitanti. Un gran re si mosse contro di essa, l'assediò e vi costruì contro grandi bastioni.	14 A little city, and few men in it: there came against it a great king, and invested it, and built bulwarks round about it, and the siege was perfect.
15 Si trovava però in essa un uomo povero ma saggio, il quale con la sua sapienza salvò la città; eppure nessuno si ricordò di quest'uomo povero.	15 Now there was found in it a man poor and wise, and he delivered the city by his wisdom, and no man afterward remembered that poor man.
16 E io dico: È meglio la sapienza della forza, ma la sapienza del povero è disprezzata e le sue parole non sono ascoltate.	16 And I said that wisdom is better than strength: how then is the wisdom of the poor man slighted, and his words not heard?
17 Le parole calme dei saggi si ascoltano più delle grida di chi domina fra i pazzi.	17 The words of the wise are heard in silence, more than the cry of a prince among fools.
18 Meglio la sapienza che le armi da guerra, ma uno sbaglio solo annienta un gran bene.	18 Better is wisdom, than weapons of war: and he that shall offend in one, shall lose many good things.
