BIBBIA CEI 1974	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Dopo questi fatti, Davide consultò il Signore dicendo: "Devo andare in qualcuna delle città di Giuda?". Il Signore gli rispose: "Va'!". Chiese ancora Davide: "Dove andrò?". Rispose: "A Ebron".	1 After this David consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Shal I go up to one of the towns of Judah?' Yahwehreplied, 'Go up!' 'Which one shal I go to?' David asked. 'To Hebron,' was the reply.
2 Davide dunque andò là con le sue due mogli, Achinoàm di Izreèl e Abigail, già moglie di Nabal da Carmel.	2 So David went up, with his two wives Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel.
3 Davide portò con sé anche i suoi uomini, ognuno con la sua famiglia, e abitarono nella città di Ebron.	3 In addition David brought up the men who were with him, each with his family, and they settled in thetowns of Hebron.
4 Vennero allora gli uomini di Giuda e qui unsero Davide re sulla casa di Giuda. Come fu noto a Davide che gli uomini di Iabes di Gàlaad avevano sepolto Saul,	4 The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David as king of the House of Judah. They told Davidthat the people of Jabesh in Gilead had given Saul burial,
5 Davide inviò messaggeri agli uomini di Iabes di Gàlaad per dir loro: "Benedetti voi dal Signore, perché avete fatto quest'opera di misericordia al vostro Signore, a Saul, e gli avete dato sepoltura.	5 so David sent messengers to the people of Jabesh in Gilead. 'May you be blessed by Yahweh,' he said,'for showing this faithful love to Saul your lord, and for burying him.
6 Vi renda dunque il Signore misericordia e fedeltà. Anch'io farò a voi del bene perché avete compiuto quest'opera.	6 And now may Yahweh show faithful love and constancy towards you! I too shall treat you wel becauseyou have done this.
7 Ora riprendano coraggio le vostre mani e siate uomini forti. È morto Saul vostro signore, ma quelli della tribù di Giuda hanno unto me come re sopra di loro".	7 And now take courage and be men of valour. Saul your lord is dead, but the House of Judah hasanointed me to be their king.'
8 Intanto Abner figlio di Ner, capo dell'esercito di Saul, prese Is-Bàal, figlio di Saul e lo condusse a Macanàim.	8 Abner son of Ner, Saul's army commander, had taken Ishbaal son of Saul and brought him over toMahanaim.
9 Poi lo costituì re su Gàlaad, sugli Asuriti, su Izreèl, su Èfraim e su Beniamino, cioè su tutto Israele.	9 He had made him king of Gilead, of the Asherites, of Jezreel, of Ephraim, of Benjamin and indeed of allIsrael.
10 Is-Bàal, figlio di Saul, aveva quarant'anni quando fu fatto re di Israele e regnò due anni. Solo la casa di Giuda seguiva Davide.	10 Ishbaal son of Saul was forty years old when he became king of Israel, and he reigned for two years.Only the House of Judah supported David.
11 Il periodo di tempo durante il quale Davide fu re di Ebron fu di sette anni e sei mesi.	11 The length of David's reign over Judah in Hebron was seven years and six months.
12 Abner figlio di Ner e i ministri di Is-Bàal, figlio di Saul, si mossero da Macanàim verso Gàbaon.	12 Abner son of Ner, with the retainers of Ishbaal son of Saul, marched out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.
13 Anche Ioab, figlio di Zeruià, e i seguaci di Davide si mossero e li incontrarono presso la piscina di Gàbaon. Questi stavano presso la piscina da una parte e quelli dall'altra parte.	13 Joab son of Zeruiah, with David's retainers, also took the field, encountering them at the pool ofGibeon. There they halted, one party on one side of the pool, and the other opposite.
14 Abner gridò a Ioab: "Potrebbero alzarsi i giovani e scontrarsi davanti a noi". Ioab rispose: "Si alzino pure".	14 Abner then said to Joab, 'Let the men come forward and fight it out between us!' Joab replied, 'Letthem come forward.'
15 Si alzarono e sfilarono in rassegna: dodici dalla parte di Beniamino e di Is-Bàal figlio di Saul e dodici tra i seguaci di Davide.	15 So they came forward and were numbered off, twelve from Benjamin for Ishbaal son of Saul, andtwelve of David's retainers.
16 Ciascuno afferrò la testa dell'avversario e gli cacciò la spada nel fianco: così caddero tutti insieme e quel luogo fu chiamato Campo dei Fianchi, che si trova in Gàbaon.	16 Each caught his opponent by the head and drove his sword into his side; and thus they al felltogether. Hence the place was cal ed the Field of Sides; it is at Gibeon.
17 La battaglia divenne in quel giorno molto dura e furono sconfitti Abner e gli Israeliti dai seguaci di Davide.	17 That day a very fierce battle took place, and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten by David'sretainers.
18 Vi erano là tre figli di Zeruià, Ioab, Abisài e Asaèl. Asaèl era veloce nella corsa come una gazzella selvatica.	18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel could run like a wildgazel e.
19 Asaèl si era messo ad inseguire Abner e non deviava né a destra né a sinistra nell'inseguire Abner.	19 Asahel chased Abner, not swerving to the right or left from pursuing him.
20 Abner si volse indietro e gli gridò: "Tu sei Asaèl?". Rispose: "Sì".	20 Abner turned and said, 'Asahel, is that you?' He replied, 'It is.'
21 Abner aggiunse: "Volgiti a destra o a sinistra, afferra qualcuno dei giovani e porta via le sue spoglie". Ma Asaèl non volle cessare di inseguirlo.	21 Abner said, 'Turn to your right or your left, catch one of the men and take his spoil!' But Asahel wouldnot break off the pursuit.
22 Abner tornò a dirgli: "Smetti di inseguirmi. Perché vuoi che ti stenda a terra? Come potrò alzare lo sguardo verso Ioab tuo fratello?".	22 Again Abner spoke to Asahel, 'Stop following me, unless you want me to strike you to the ground; andthen how could I look your brother Joab in the face?'
23 Ma siccome quegli non voleva saperne di ritirarsi, lo colpì con la punta della lancia al basso ventre, così che la lancia gli uscì di dietro ed egli cadde sul posto. Allora quanti arrivarono al luogo dove Asaèl era caduto e morto si fermarono.	23 But he refused to be diverted, so Abner struck him in the belly with the butt of his spear so that theshaft came out through his back; and he fell at his feet and died on the spot. On coming to the place whereAsahel had fal en and died, everyone halted.
24 Ma Ioab e Abisài inseguirono Abner, finché, al tramonto del sole, essi giunsero alla collina di Ammà, di fronte a Ghiach, sulla strada del deserto di Gàbaon.	24 Joab and Abishai took up the pursuit of Abner and at sunset reached the Hil of Ammah, which is tothe east of Giah on the road through the desert of Gibeon.
25 I Beniaminiti si radunarono dietro Abner formando un gruppo compatto e si fermarono in cima ad una collina.	25 The Benjaminites gathered in close formation behind Abner and halted on the top of a hil .
26 Allora Abner gridò a Ioab: "Dovrà continuare per sempre la spada a divorare? Non sai che alla fine sarà una sventura? Quando finalmente darai ordine alla truppa di cessare l'inseguimento dei loro fratelli?".	26 Abner cal ed out to Joab, 'Is the sword to go on devouring for ever? Surely you see that this can onlyend in bitterness? How long wil it be before you order those people to stop pursuing their brothers?'
27 Rispose Ioab: "Per la vita di Dio, se tu non avessi parlato così, nessuno della truppa avrebbe cessato fino al mattino di inseguire il proprio fratello".	27 Joab replied, 'As Yahweh lives, if you had not spoken, these men would not have given up the pursuitof their brothers until morning.'
28 Allora Ioab fece suonare la tromba e tutta la truppa si fermò e non inseguì più Israele e non combatté più.	28 Joab then sounded the trumpet and all the troops halted; they pursued Israel no further and fought nomore.
29 Abner e i suoi uomini marciarono per l'Araba tutta quella notte; passarono il Giordano, camminarono tutta la mattinata e arrivarono a Macanàim.	29 Al that night Abner and his men made their way through the Arabah; they crossed the Jordan and,marching throughout the morning, came to Mahanaim.
30 Ioab, tornato dall'inseguimento di Abner, radunò tutta la truppa. Degli uomini di Davide ne mancavano diciannove oltre Asaèl.	30 Joab, having stopped pursuing Abner, mustered the whole contingent; David's retainers had lostnineteen men in addition to Asahel,
31 Ma i servi di Davide avevano colpito e ucciso trecentosessanta uomini tra i Beniaminiti e la gente di Abner.	31 but had killed three hundred and sixty of Benjamin, Abner's men.
32 Essi presero Asaèl e lo seppellirono nel sepolcro di suo padre, che è in Betlemme. Ioab e i suoi uomini marciarono tutta la notte; spuntava il giorno quando furono in Ebron.	32 They took up Asahel and buried him in his father's tomb, which is at Bethlehem. Joab and his menthen marched throughout the night, reaching Hebron at daybreak.
