| 3 Mes discours sortiront d'un cœur simple, et mes lèvres ne prononceront que la pure vérité (un sentiment pur). | 3 I shal utter words of wisdom from the heart, my lips will speak in all sincerity. |
| 4 C'est l'Esprit de Dieu qui m'a créé, et c'est le souffle du Tout-Puissant qui m'a donné la vie. | 4 God's was the spirit that made me, Shaddai's the breath that gave me life. |
| 5 Si tu le peux, réponds-moi, et tiens-toi ferme en face de moi. | 5 Refute me, if you can. Prepare yourself, take up your position! |
| 6 Dieu m'a fait aussi bien que toi, et moi aussi j'ai été formé de la même boue. | 6 Look, I am your equal, not some god, like you I was moulded out of clay. |
| 7 Mais il n'y a rien (que ce qu'il y a) de merveilleux en moi pour t'épouvanter (ne t'épouvante pas), et mon éloquence ne t'accablera pas. | 7 No fear of me, therefore, need affright you, my hand wil not lie heavy over you. |
| 8 Tu as (donc) dit à mes oreilles, et j'ai entendu le son de tes paroles : | 8 How could you say in my hearing -- for the sound of your words did not escape me- |
| 9 Je suis pur et sans péché ; je suis sans tache, et il n'y a pas d'iniquité en moi. | 9 'I am clean, and sinless, I am pure, without fault. |
| 10 Car Dieu a cherché des sujets de plainte contre moi : c'est pourquoi il a cru que j'étais son ennemi. | 10 But he keeps inventing excuses against me and regards me as his enemy. |
| 11 Il a mis mes pieds dans l'entrave ; il a observé tous mes sentiers. | 11 He puts me in the stocks, he watches my every path'? |
| 12 C'est donc en cela même que tu n'es pas juste. Car je te réponds que Dieu est plus grand que l'homme. | 12 In saying so, I tel you, you are wrong: for God is greater than any human being. |
| 13 Disputes-tu contre lui, parce qu'il n'a pas répondu à toutes tes paroles ? | 13 Why then quarrel with him for not replying to you, word for word? |
| 14 Dieu parle une fois, et il ne répète pas une seconde fois ce qu'il a dit. | 14 God speaks first in one way, and then in another, although we do not realise it. |
| 15 Pendant un songe, dans une vision de la nuit, lorsque le sommeil est tombé sur les hommes et qu'ils dorment dans leur lit | 15 In dreams and in night-visions, when slumber has settled on humanity and people are asleep in bed, |
| 16 alors Dieu leur ouvre l'oreille ; il les avertit et les instruit de ce qu'ils doivent savoir (leur enseigne la science), | 16 he speaks in someone's ear, frightens him with apparitions |
| 17 pour détourner (ainsi) l'homme du mal qu'il fait, et pour le délivrer de l'orgueil ; | 17 to turn him from what he is doing and to put an end to his pride. |
| 18 pour tirer son âme de la corruption, et pour sauver sa vie du glaive. | 18 And thus he preserves his soul from the abyss, his life from passing down the Canal. |
| 19 Il le châtie aussi par la douleur sur sa couche, et il fait sécher tous ses os. | 19 Or again, he corrects by the sufferings of the sick-bed, when someone's bones tremble continuously |
| 20 En cet état (Durant sa vie), il a en horreur le pain, et la nourriture qu'il trouvait auparavant délicieuse (pour son âme). | 20 and the thought of food revolts him, however tasty it is, |
| 21 (Toute) Sa chair se consume, et les os, qui étaient recouverts, paraissent à nu. | 21 and his flesh rots away while you watch it and the bones beneath begin to show, |
| 22 Son âme s'approche du tombeau (de la corruption), et sa vie appartient aux exterminateurs (de tout ce qui pouvait lui donner la mort). | 22 and his soul is drawing nearer to the abyss and his life to the dwel ing of the dead. |
| 23 Si un ange choisi entre mille parle pour lui, et qu'il annonce l'équité de cet homme, | 23 Then, if there is an Angel near him, a Mediator, one in a thousand, to remind him where his duty lies, |
| 24 Dieu aura compassion de lui, et dira : Délivre-le, afin qu'il ne descende pas dans la corruption ; j'ai trouvé lieu de lui faire grâce. | 24 to take pity on him and to say, 'Spare him from going down to the abyss: I have found the ransom forhis life,' |
| 25 Sa chair est consumée par les souffrances ; qu'il retourne aux jours de sa jeunesse. | 25 his flesh wil recover its childhood freshness, he wil return to the days of his youth. |
| 26 Il priera Dieu, et Dieu lui sera propice (se laissera apaiser) ; il verra sa face avec un transport de joie, et Dieu rendra à cet homme sa justice. | 26 He wil pray to God who has restored him to favour, and wil come into his presence with joy. He wiltel others how he has received saving justice |
| 27 Il regardera les hommes, et il dira : J'ai péché, j'ai vraiment offensé Dieu, et je n'ai pas été châtié comme je le méritais. | 27 and sing this hymn before his companions, 'I sinned and left the path of right, but God has notpunished me as my sin deserved. |
| 28 Il a ainsi délivré son âme, afin qu'elle ne tombât pas dans la mort, mais qu'en vivant elle jouît de la lumière. | 28 He has spared my soul from going down to the abyss and is making my life see the light.' |
| 29 Or Dieu fait toutes ces choses trois fois pour chacun des hommes, | 29 All this is what God keeps doing again and yet again for human beings, |
| 30 pour rappeler leurs âmes de la corruption, et pour les éclairer (illuminer) de la lumière des vivants. | 30 to snatch souls back from the abyss and to make the light of the living stil shine. |
| 31 Job, sois attentif et écoute-moi, et garde le silence pendant que je parle. | 31 Pay attention, Job, listen to me: keep quiet, I have more to say. |
| 32 Mais si tu as quelque chose à dire, réponds-moi, parle ; car je veux te donner lieu de te justifier. | 32 If you have anything to say, refute me, speak out, for I would gladly accept that you are upright. |
| 33 Si tu n'as rien à dire, écoute-moi ; garde le silence, et je t'enseignerai la sagesse. | 33 If not, then listen to me: keep quiet, and I wil teach you wisdom. |
