υπολαβων δε σωφαρ ο μιναιος λεγει | 1 Then Sophar the Naamathite answered, and said: |
ο τα πολλα λεγων και αντακουσεται η και ο ευλαλος οιεται ειναι δικαιος ευλογημενος γεννητος γυναικος ολιγοβιος | 2 Shall not he that speaketh much, hear also? or shall a man full of talk be justified? |
μη πολυς εν ρημασιν γινου ου γαρ εστιν ο αντικρινομενος σοι | 3 Shall men hold their peace to thee only? and when thou hast mocked others, shall no man confute thee? |
μη γαρ λεγε οτι καθαρος ειμι τοις εργοις και αμεμπτος εναντιον αυτου | 4 For thou hast said: My word is pure, and I am clean in thy sight. |
αλλα πως αν ο κυριος λαλησαι προς σε και ανοιξει χειλη αυτου μετα σου | 5 And I wish that God would speak with thee, and would open his lips to thee, |
ειτα αναγγελει σοι δυναμιν σοφιας οτι διπλους εσται των κατα σε και τοτε γνωση οτι αξια σοι απεβη απο κυριου ων ημαρτηκας | 6 That he might shew thee the secrets of wisdom, and that his law is manifold, and thou mightest understand that he exacteth much less of thee, than thy iniquity deserveth. |
η ιχνος κυριου ευρησεις η εις τα εσχατα αφικου α εποιησεν ο παντοκρατωρ | 7 Peradventure thou wilt comprehend the steps of God, and wilt find out the Almighty perfectly? |
υψηλος ο ουρανος και τι ποιησεις βαθυτερα δε των εν αδου τι οιδας | 8 He is higher than heaven, and what wilt thou do ? he is deeper than hell, and how wilt thou know? |
η μακροτερα μετρου γης η ευρους θαλασσης | 9 The measure of him is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea. |
εαν δε καταστρεψη τα παντα τις ερει αυτω τι εποιησας | 10 If he shall overturn all things, or shall press them together, who shall contradict him? |
αυτος γαρ οιδεν εργα ανομων ιδων δε ατοπα ου παροψεται | 11 For he knoweth the vanity of men, and when he seeth iniquity, doth he not consider it? |
ανθρωπος δε αλλως νηχεται λογοις βροτος δε γεννητος γυναικος ισα ονω ερημιτη | 12 A vain man is lifted up into pride, and thinketh himself born free like a wild ass's colt. |
ει γαρ συ καθαραν εθου την καρδιαν σου υπτιαζεις δε χειρας προς αυτον | 13 Rut thou hast hardened thy heart, and hast spread thy hands to him. |
ει ανομον τι εστιν εν χερσιν σου πορρω ποιησον αυτο απο σου αδικια δε εν διαιτη σου μη αυλισθητω | 14 If thou wilt put away from thee the iniquity that is in thy hand, and lot not injustice remain in thy tabernacle: |
ουτως γαρ αναλαμψει σου το προσωπον ωσπερ υδωρ καθαρον εκδυση δε ρυπον και ου μη φοβηθης | 15 Then mayst thou lift up thy face without spot, and thou shalt be steadfast, and shalt not fear. |
και τον κοπον επιληση ωσπερ κυμα παρελθον και ου πτοηθηση | 16 Thou shalt also forget misery, and remember it only as waters that are passed away. |
η δε ευχη σου ωσπερ εωσφορος εκ δε μεσημβριας ανατελει σοι ζωη | 17 And brightness like that of the noonday, shall arise to thee at evening: and when thou shalt think thyself consumed, thou shalt rise as the day star. |
πεποιθως τε εση οτι εστιν σοι ελπις εκ δε μεριμνης και φροντιδος αναφανειται σοι ειρηνη | 18 And thou shalt have confidence, hope being set before thee, and being buried thou shalt sleep secure. |
ησυχασεις γαρ και ουκ εσται ο πολεμων σε μεταβαλομενοι δε πολλοι σου δεηθησονται | 19 Thou shalt rest, and there shall be none to make thee afraid: and many shall entreat thy face. |
σωτηρια δε αυτους απολειψει η γαρ ελπις αυτων απωλεια οφθαλμοι δε ασεβων τακησονται | 20 But the eyes of the wicked shall decay, and the way to escape shall fail them, and their hope the abomination of the soul. |
