| 2 Pero ni él, ni sus oficiales ni el pueblo de la tierra habían hecho caso de las palabras que el Señor les había comunicado por medio del profeta Jeremías. | 2 Neither he, nor his ministers, nor the people of the land would listen to the words of the LORD spoken by Jeremiah the prophet. |
| 3 El rey Sedecías envió a Jucal, hijo de Selemías, y al sacerdote Sofonías, hijo de Maasías, para que dijeran a Jeremías: «Reza por nosotros al Señor, nuestro Dios». | 3 Yet King Zedekiah sent Jehucal, son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah, son of Maaseiah the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah with this request: "Pray to the LORD, our God, for us." |
| 4 Por entonces Jeremías andaba entre la gente, pues todavía no había sido encarcelado. | 4 At this time Jeremiah had not yet been put into prison; he still came and went freely among the people. |
| 5 El ejército del faraón había salido de Egipto. Cuando los caldeos que asediaban Jerusalén se enteraron de la noticia, levantaron el cerco de la ciudad. | 5 Also, Pharaoh's army had set out from Egypt, and when the Chaldeans who were besieging Jerusalem heard this report they marched away from the city. |
| 6 Entonces el profeta Jeremías recibió esta palabra del Señor: | 6 This word of the LORD then came to the prophet Jeremiah: |
| 7 «Esto dice el Señor, Dios de Israel: Decid esto al rey de Judá que os ha enviado a consultarme: Mirad, el ejército del faraón, que se había movilizado para ayudaros, ha regresado a Egipto, su país. | 7 Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Give this answer to the king of Judah who sent you to me to consult me: Pharaoh's army which has set out to help you will return to its own land, Egypt. |
| 8 Los caldeos que atacaban esta ciudad volverán, la tomarán y prenderán fuego a esta ciudad. | 8 The Chaldeans shall return to the fight against this city; they shall capture it and destroy it with fire. |
| 9 Esto dice el Señor: No os engañéis pensando que los caldeos van a levantar el cerco y se van a retirar, pues no se retirarán. | 9 Thus says the LORD: Do not deceive yourselves with the thought that the Chaldeans will leave you for good, because they shall not leave! |
| 10 Además, aunque derrotarais a todo el ejército caldeo que ahora os ataca, con tal de que quedasen en las tiendas unos cuantos heridos, se levantarían y pegarían fuego a esta ciudad». | 10 Even if you were to defeat the whole Chaldean army now attacking you, and only the wounded remained, each in his tent, these would rise up and destroy the city with fire. |
| 11 Cuando el ejército caldeo estaba levantando el cerco de Jerusalén para replegarse ante el avance del ejército del faraón, | 11 When the Chaldean army lifted the siege of Jerusalem at the threat of the army of Pharaoh, |
| 12 salió Jeremías de Jerusalén camino del territorio de Benjamín para asistir a un reparto de tierras entre su gente. | 12 Jeremiah set out from Jerusalem for the district of Benjamin, to take part with his family in the division of an inheritance. |
| 13 Cuando se disponía a salir por la Puerta de Benjamín, Jirías, capitán de la guardia, hijo de Selemías y nieto de Jananías, apresó al profeta Jeremías acusándolo de pasarse a los caldeos. | 13 But when he reached the Gate of Benjamin, he met the captain of the guard, a man named Irijah, son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah; he seized the prophet Jeremiah, saying, "You are deserting to the Chaldeans!" |
| 14 Jeremías le contestó: «Mentira. Yo no me paso a los caldeos». Pero Jirías no le hizo caso. Apresó a Jeremías y lo condujo ante los dignatarios. | 14 "That is a lie!" Jeremiah answered, "I am not deserting to the Chaldeans." Without listening, Irijah kept Jeremiah in custody and brought him to the princes. |
| 15 Estos se irritaron contra Jeremías y mandaron que lo azotaran y lo encarcelaran en casa del escriba Jonatán, que habían acondicionado como prisión. | 15 The princes were enraged, and had Jeremiah beaten and thrown into prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe, which they were using as a jail. |
| 16 Jeremías fue así a parar al calabozo del sótano, donde permaneció largo tiempo. | 16 And so Jeremiah entered the vaulted dungeon, where he remained a long time. |
| 17 El rey Sedecías ordenó que se lo trajeran a palacio y le preguntó en secreto: —¿Hay algún mensaje de parte del Señor? Respondió Jeremías: —Sí; y añadió: serás entregado en manos del rey de Babilonia. | 17 Once King Zedekiah had him brought to his palace and he asked him secretly whether there was any message from the LORD. Yes! Jeremiah answered: you shall be handed over to the king of Babylon. |
| 18 Dijo también Jeremías al rey Sedecías: —¿Qué delito he cometido contra ti, tus oficiales o este pueblo para que hayas ordenado que me metan en la cárcel? | 18 Jeremiah then asked King Zedekiah: In what have I wronged you, or your ministers, or this people, that you should put me in prison? |
| 19 ¿Dónde están esos profetas vuestros que os anunciaban que el rey de Babilonia no os atacaría ni penetraría en el país? | 19 And where are your own prophets now, |
| 20 Y ahora escúchame, mi rey y señor: te pido por favor que no me devuelvas a la casa del escriba Jonatán, de lo contrario moriré allí. | 20 who prophesied to you that the king of Babylon would not attack you or this land? Hear now, my lord king, and grant my petition: do not send me back into the house of Jonathan the scribe, or I shall die there. |
| 21 Entonces el rey Sedecías ordenó que custodiasen a Jeremías en el patio de la guardia, y que le diesen una hogaza diaria de pan —de la calle de los Panaderos—, mientras hubiese pan en la ciudad. Y Jeremías se quedó en el patio de la guardia. | 21 King Zedekiah ordered that Jeremiah be confined in the quarters of the guard, and given a loaf of bread each day from the bakers' shop until all the bread in the city was eaten up. Thus Jeremiah remained in the quarters of the guard. |
