| 3 Así que los egipcios, aun estando hambrientos, | perdían hasta el apetito natural, | asqueados por los repugnantes bichos que les habías enviado, | mientras los israelitas, después de una breve privación, | saboreaban un manjar exquisito. | 3 Thus the Egyptians, at the repulsive sight of the creatures sent against them, were to find that, thoughthey longed for food, they had lost their natural appetite; whereas your own people, after a short privation, wereto have a rare relish for their portion. |
| 4 Pues era justo que aquellos opresores sufrieran un hambre irremediable, | mientras a estos bastaba con mostrarles cómo eran torturados sus enemigos. | 4 Inevitable that relentless want should seize on the former oppressors; enough for your people to beshown how their enemies were being tortured. |
| 5 Incluso cuando les sobrevino la terrible furia de las fieras | y perecían mordidos por serpientes sinuosas, | tu ira no llegó hasta el final. | 5 Even when the fearful rage of wild animals overtook them and they were perishing from the bites ofwrithing snakes, your retribution did not continue to the end. |
| 6 Para que escarmentaran, se les atormentó por poco tiempo, | pues tenían un signo de salvación como recordatorio del mandato de tu ley. | 6 Affliction struck them briefly, by way of warning, and they had a saving token to remind them of thecommandment of your Law, |
| 7 Y el que se volvía hacia él se curaba, no por lo que contemplaba, | sino gracias ti, Salvador de todos. | 7 for whoever turned to it was saved, not by what he looked at, but by you, the Saviour of all. |
| 8 Así convenciste a nuestros enemigos | de que eres tú quien libra de todo mal. | 8 And by such means you proved to our enemies that you are the one who delivers from every evil; |
| 9 Ellos morían por las picaduras de langostas y moscas, | sin poder encontrar remedio para sus vidas, | pues merecían ser castigados por tales bichos; | 9 for them, the bites of locusts and flies proved fatal and no remedy could be found to save their lives,since they deserved to be punished by such creatures. |
| 10 a tus hijos, en cambio, ni los dientes de las serpientes venenosas les pudieron, | sino que tu misericordia salió en su ayuda y los salvó. | 10 But your children, not even the fangs of poisonous snakes could bring them down; for your mercycame to their help and cured them. |
| 11 Las mordeduras, que se curaban enseguida, | les recordaban tus palabras, | no fuera que cayeran en profundo olvido | y quedaran excluidos de tu bondad. | 11 One sting -- how quickly healed!-to remind them of your pronouncements rather than that, by sinkinginto deep forgetfulness, they should be cut off from your kindness. |
| 12 No los curó hierba ni cataplasma, | sino tu palabra, Señor, que todo lo sana. | 12 No herb, no poultice cured them, but your al -healing word, Lord. |
| 13 Pues tú tienes poder sobre la vida y la muerte, | haces bajar a las puertas del Hades y haces regresar. | 13 Yes, you are the one with power over life and death, bringing to the gates of Hades and back again. |
| 14 El hombre, en cambio, puede matar con su maldad, | pero no puede devolver el espíritu que se fue, | ni rescatar el alma ya prisionera. | 14 A human being out of malice may put to death, but cannot bring the departed spirit back or free thesoul that Hades has once received. |

| 17 Y lo más sorprendente era que con el agua, que todo lo apaga, | el fuego cobraba una violencia mayor, | pues el universo es paladín de los justos. | 17 Even more wonderful, in the water -- which quenches al -- the fire raged fiercer than ever; for theelements fight for the upright. |
| 18 Unas veces la llama se amortiguaba, | para no abrasar a los animales enviados contra los impíos | y para que, al verlos, comprendieran que los impulsaba el juicio de Dios; | 18 At one moment, the fire would die down, to avoid consuming the animals sent against the godlessand to make clear to them by that sight, that the sentence of God was pursuing them; |
| 19 pero, otras veces, aun en medio del agua, la llama ardía con más fuerza que el fuego, | para destruir los frutos de una tierra malvada. | 19 at another, in the very heart of the water, it would burn more fiercely than fire to ruin the produce of awicked land. |
| 20 A tu pueblo, en cambio, lo alimentaste con manjar de ángeles, | y les mandaste desde el cielo un pan preparado sin esfuerzo, | lleno de toda delicia y grato a cualquier gusto. | 20 How differently with your people! You gave them the food of angels, from heaven untiringly providingthem bread already prepared, containing every delight, to satisfy every taste. |
| 21 Este sustento revelaba a tus hijos tu dulzura, | pues se adaptaba al gusto de quien lo tomaba | y se convertía en lo que cada uno quería. | 21 And the substance you gave showed your sweetness towards your children, for, conforming to thetaste of whoever ate it, it transformed itself into what each eater wished. |
| 22 Nieve y hielo resistían al fuego sin derretirse, | para que supieran que el fuego, | ardiendo entre el granizo y resplandeciendo bajo la lluvia, | destruía las cosechas de los enemigos; | 22 Snow and ice endured the fire, without melting; this was to show them that, to destroy the harvests oftheir enemies, fire would burn even in hail and flare in fal ing rain, |
| 23 mientras que, para que los justos se alimentaran, | se olvidaba hasta de su propia fuerza. | 23 whereas, on the other hand, it would even forget its own strength in the service of feeding the upright. |
| 24 Porque la creación, sirviéndote a ti, su creador, | despliega su fuerza para castigar a los malvados | y la modera para beneficiar a los que en ti confían. | 24 For the creation, being at the service of you, its Creator, tautens to punish the wicked and slackensfor the benefit of those who trust in you. |
| 25 Por eso también entonces, adoptando todas las formas, | estaba al servicio de tu generosidad, que a todos sustenta, | según el deseo de los que te necesitan. | 25 And this is why, by changing into al things, it obediently served your all-nourishing bounty,conforming to the wishes of those who were in need; |
| 26 Así aprenderán tus hijos queridos, Señor, | que la variedad de frutos no alimenta al hombre, | sino tu palabra, que mantiene a los que creen en ti. | 26 so that your beloved children, Lord, might learn that the various crops are not what providenourishment, but your word which preserves al who believe in you. |
| 27 Pues lo que el fuego no pudo devorar | se derritió simplemente al calor de un tenue rayo de sol, | 27 For that which fire could not destroy melted in the heat of a single fleeting sunbeam, |
| 28 para que supieran que hay que adelantarse al sol para darte gracias | y salir a tu encuentro al rayar el alba. | 28 to show that, to give you thanks, we must rise before the sun and meet you at the dawning of theday; |
| 29 Pues la esperanza del ingrato se derrite como escarcha invernal | y se escurre como agua inservible. | 29 whereas the hope of the ungrateful melts like winter frost and flows away like water running to waste. |
