BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Faltaban dos días para la Pascua y los Azimos. Los sumos sacerdotes y los escribas buscaban cómo prenderle con engaño y matarle.	1 It was two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and thescribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.
2 Pues decían: «Durante la fiesta no, no sea que haya alboroto del pueblo».	2 For they said, 'It must not be during the festivities, or there wil be a disturbance among the people.'
3 Estando él en Betania, en casa de Simón el leproso, recostado a la mesa, vino una mujer que traía un frasco de alabastro con perfume puro de nardo, de mucho precio; quebró el frasco y lo derramó sobre su cabeza.	3 He was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease; hewas at table when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, pure nard. She broke the jarand poured the ointment on his head.
4 Había algunos que se decían entre sí indignados: «¿Para qué este despilfarro de perfume?	4 Some who were there said to one another indignantly, 'Why this waste of ointment?
5 Se podía haber vendido este perfume por más de trescientos denarios y habérselo dado a los pobres». Y refunfuñaban contra ella.	5 Ointment like this could have been sold for over three hundred denari and the money given to thepoor'; and they were angry with her.
6 Mas Jesús dijo: «Dejadla. ¿Por qué la molestáis? Ha hecho una obra buena en mí.	6 But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you upsetting her? What she has done for me is a goodwork.
7 Porque pobres tendréis siempre con vosotros y podréis hacerles bien cuando queráis; pero a mí no me tendréis siempre.	7 You have the poor with you always, and you can be kind to them whenever you wish, but you wil notalways have me.
8 Ha hecho lo que ha podido. Se ha anticipado a embalsamar mi cuerpo para la sepultura.	8 She has done what she could: she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.
9 Yo os aseguro: dondequiera que se proclame la Buena Nueva, en el mundo entero, se hablará también de lo que ésta ha hecho para memoria suya».	9 In truth I tel you, wherever throughout al the world the gospel is proclaimed, what she has done wilbe told as well, in remembrance of her.'
10 Entonces, Judas Iscariote, uno de los Doce, se fue donde los sumos sacerdotes para entregárselo.	10 Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, approached the chief priests with an offer to hand Jesus over tothem.
11 Al oírlo ellos, se alegraron y prometieron darle dinero. Y él andaba buscando cómo le entregaría en momento oportuno.	11 They were delighted to hear it, and promised to give him money; and he began to look for a way ofbetraying him when the opportunity should occur.
12 El primer día de los Azimos, cuando se sacrificaba el cordero pascual, le dicen sus discípulos: «¿Dónde quieres que vayamos a hacer los preparativos para que comas el cordero de Pascua?»	12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said tohim, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'
13 Entonces, envía a dos de sus discípulos y les dice: «Id a la ciudad; os saldrá al encuentro un hombre llevando un cántaro de agua; seguidle	13 So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying apitcher of water. Fol ow him,
14 y allí donde entre, decid al dueño de la casa: “El Maestro dice: ¿Dónde está mi sala, donde pueda comer la Pascua con mis discípulos?”	14 and say to the owner of the house which he enters, "The Master says: Where is the room for me toeat the Passover with my disciples?"
15 El os enseñará en el piso superior una sala grande, ya dispuesta y preparada; haced allí los preparativos para nosotros».	15 He wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches, al prepared. Make the preparations forus there.'
16 Los discípulos salieron, llegaron a la ciudad, lo encontraron tal como les había dicho, y prepararon la Pascua.	16 The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and preparedthe Passover.
17 Y al atardecer, llega él con los Doce.	17 When evening came he arrived with the Twelve.
18 Y mientras comían recostados, Jesús dijo: «Yo os aseguro que uno de vosotros me entregará, el que come conmigo».	18 And while they were at table eating, Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me,one of you eating with me.'
19 Ellos empezaron a entristecerse y a decirle uno tras otro: «¿Acaso soy yo?»	19 They were distressed and said to him, one after another, 'Not me, surely?'
20 El les dijo: «Uno de los Doce que moja conmigo en el mismo plato.	20 He said to them, 'It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping into the same dish with me.
21 Porque el Hijo del hombre se va, como está escrito de él, pero ¡ay de aquel por quien el Hijo del hombre es entregado! ¡Más le valdría a ese hombre no haber nacido!»	21 Yes, the Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whomthe Son of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born.'
22 Y mientras estaban comiendo, tomó pan, lo bendijo, lo partió y se lo dio y dijo: «Tomad, este es mi cuerpo».	22 And as they were eating he took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it tothem. 'Take it,' he said, 'this is my body.'
23 Tomó luego una copa y, dadas las gracias, se la dio, y bebieron todos de ella.	23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them, and al drank from it,
24 Y les dijo: «Esta es mi sangre de la Alianza, que es derramada por muchos.	24 and he said to them, 'This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many.
25 Yo os aseguro que ya no beberé del producto de la vid hasta el día en que lo beba nuevo en el Reino de Dios».	25 In truth I tel you, I shal never drink wine any more until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdomof God.'
26 Y cantados los himnos, salieron hacia el monte de los Olivos.	26 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.
27 Jesús les dice: «Todos os vais a escandalizar, ya que está escrito: Heriré al pastor y se dispersarán las ovejas.	27 And Jesus said to them, 'You wil all fal away, for the scripture says: I shal strike the shepherd andthe sheep wil be scattered;
28 Pero después de mi resurrección, iré delante de vosotros a Galilea».	28 however, after my resurrection I shall go before you into Galilee.'
29 Pedro le dijo: «Aunque todos se escandalicen, yo no».	29 Peter said, 'Even if all fal away, I wil not.'
30 Jesús le dice: «Yo te aseguro: hoy, esta misma noche, antes que el gallo cante dos veces, tú me habrás negado tres».	30 And Jesus said to him, 'In truth I tel you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, youwil have disowned me three times.'
31 Pero él insistía: «Aunque tenga que morir contigo, yo no te negaré». Lo mismo decían también todos.	31 But he repeated stil more earnestly, 'If I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And they allsaid the same.
32 Van a una propiedad, cuyo nombre es Getsemaní, y dice a sus discípulos: «Sentaos aquí, mientras yo hago oración».	32 They came to a plot of land cal ed Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I pray.'
33 Toma consigo a Pedro, Santiago y Juan, y comenzó a sentir pavor y angustia.	33 Then he took Peter and James and John with him.
34 Y les dice: «Mi alma está triste hasta el punto de morir; quedaos aquí y velad».	34 And he began to feel terror and anguish. And he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point ofdeath. Wait here, and stay awake.'
35 Y adelantándose un poco, caía en tierra y suplicaba que a ser posible pasara de él aquella hora.	35 And going on a little further he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, thishour might pass him by.
36 Y decía: «¡Abbá, Padre!; todo es posible para ti; aparta de mí esta copa; pero no sea lo que yo quiero, sino lo que quieras tú».	36 'Abba, Father!' he said, 'For you everything is possible. Take this cup away from me. But let it be asyou, not I, would have it.'
37 Viene entonces y los encuentra dormidos; y dice a Pedro: «Simón, ¿duermes?, ¿ni una hora has podido velar?	37 He came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'Simon, are you asleep? Had you notthe strength to stay awake one hour?
38 Velad y orad, para que no caigáis en tentación; que el espíritu está pronto, pero la carne es débil».	38 Stay awake and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is wil ing enough, but human nature is weak.'
39 Y alejándose de nuevo, oró diciendo las mismas palabras.	39 Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.
40 Volvió otra vez y los encontró dormidos, pues sus ojos estaban cargados; ellos no sabían qué contestarle.	40 And once more he came back and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy; and they couldfind no answer for him.
41 Viene por tercera vez y les dice: «Ahora ya podéis dormir y descansar. Basta ya. Llegó la hora. Mirad que el Hijo del hombre va a ser entregado en manos de los pecadores.	41 He came back a third time and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest. It is al over.The hour has come. Now the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.
42 ¡Levantaos! ¡vámonos! Mirad, el que me va a entregar está cerca».	42 Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is not far away.'
43 Todavía estaba hablando, cuando de pronto se presenta Judas, uno de los Doce, acompañado de un grupo con espadas y palos, de parte de los sumos sacerdotes, de los escribas y de los ancianos.	43 And at once, while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up and with him a numberof men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
44 El que le iba a entregar les había dado esta contraseña: «Aquel a quien yo dé un beso, ése es, prendedle y llevadle con cautela».	44 Now the traitor had arranged a signal with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him,and see he is well guarded when you lead him away.'
45 Nada más llegar, se acerca a él y le dice: «Rabbí», y le dio un beso.	45 So when the traitor came, he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him.
46 Ellos le echaron mano y le prendieron.	46 The others seized him and arrested him.
47 Uno de los presentes, sacando la espada, hirió al siervo del Sumo Sacerdote, y le llevó la oreja.	47 Then one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the high priest's servant and cut off hisear.
48 Y tomando la palabra Jesús, les dijo: «¿Como contra un salteador habéis salido a prenderme con espadas y palos?	48 Then Jesus spoke. 'Am I a bandit,' he said, 'that you had to set out to capture me with swords andclubs?
49 Todos los días estaba junto a vosotros enseñando en el Templo, y no me detuvisteis. Pero es para que se cumplan las Escrituras».	49 I was among you teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me. But this isto fulfil the scriptures.'
50 Y abandonándole huyeron todos.	50 And they al deserted him and ran away.
51 Un joven le seguía cubierto sólo de un lienzo; y le detienen.	51 A young man fol owed with nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him,
52 Pero él, dejando el lienzo, se escapó desnudo.	52 but he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.
53 Llevaron a Jesús ante el Sumo Sacerdote, y se reúnen todos los sumos sacerdotes, los ancianos y los escribas.	53 They led Jesus off to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribesassembled there.
54 También Pedro le siguió de lejos, hasta dentro del palacio del Sumo Sacerdote, y estaba sentado con los criados, calentándose al fuego.	54 Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the high priest's palace, and was sitting with theattendants warming himself at the fire.
55 Los sumos sacerdotes y el Sanedrín entero andaban buscando contra Jesús un testimonio para darle muerte; pero no lo encontraban.	55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus in order to havehim executed. But they could not find any.
56 Pues muchos daban falso testimonio contra él, pero los testimonios no coincidían.	56 Several, indeed, brought false witness against him, but their evidence was conflicting.
57 Algunos, levantándose, dieron contra él este falso testimonio:	57 Some stood up and submitted this false evidence against him,
58 «Nosotros le oímos decir: Yo destruiré este Santuario hecho por hombres y en tres días edificaré otro no hecho por hombres».	58 'We heard him say, "I am going to destroy this Temple made by human hands, and in three daysbuild another, not made by human hands." '
59 Y tampoco en este caso coincidía su testimonio.	59 But even on this point their evidence was conflicting.
60 Entonces, se levantó el Sumo Sacerdote y poniéndose en medio, preguntó a Jesús: «¿No respondes nada? ¿Qué es lo que éstos atestiguan contra ti?»	60 The high priest then rose before the whole assembly and put this question to Jesus, 'Have you noanswer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you?'
61 Pero él seguía callado y no respondía nada. El Sumo Sacerdote le preguntó de nuevo: «¿Eres tú el Cristo, el Hijo del Bendito?»	61 But he was silent and made no answer at all. The high priest put a second question to him saying,'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?'
62 Y dijo Jesús: «Sí, yo soy, y veréis al Hijo del hombre sentado a la diestra del Poder y venir entre las nubes del cielo».	62 'I am,' said Jesus, 'and you wil see the Son of man seated at the right hand of the Power and comingwith the clouds of heaven.'
63 El Sumo Sacerdote se rasga las túnicas y dice: «¿Qué necesidad tenemos ya de testigos?	63 The high priest tore his robes and said, 'What need of witnesses have we now?
64 Habéis oído la blasfemia. ¿Qué os parece?» Todos juzgaron que era reo de muerte.	64 You heard the blasphemy. What is your finding?' Their verdict was unanimous: he deserved to die.
65 Algunos se pusieron a escupirle, le cubrían la cara y le daban bofetadas, mientras le decían: «Adivina», y los criados le recibieron a golpes.	65 Some of them started spitting at his face, hitting him and saying, 'Play the prophet!' And theattendants struck him too.
66 Estando Pedro abajo en el patio, llega una de las criadas del Sumo Sacerdote	66 While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant-girls came up.
67 y al ver a Pedro calentándose, le mira atentamente y le dice: «También tú estabas con Jesús de Nazaret».	67 She saw Peter warming himself there, looked closely at him and said, 'You too were with Jesus, theman from Nazareth.'
68 Pero él lo negó: «Ni sé ni entiendo qué dices», y salió afuera, al portal, y cantó un gallo.	68 But he denied it. 'I do not know, I do not understand what you are talking about,' he said. And hewent out into the forecourt, and a cock crowed.
69 Le vio la criada y otra vez se puso a decir a los que estaban allí: «Este es uno de ellos».	69 The servant-girl saw him and again started tel ing the bystanders, 'This man is one of them.'
70 Pero él lo negaba de nuevo. Poco después, los que estaban allí volvieron a decir a Pedro: «Ciertamente eres de ellos pues además eres galileo».	70 But again he denied it. A little later the bystanders themselves said to Peter, 'You are certainly one ofthem! Why, you are a Galilean.'
71 Pero él, se puso a echar imprecaciones y a jurar: «¡Yo no conozco a ese hombre de quien habláis!»	71 But he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man you speak of.'
72 Inmediatamente cantó un gallo por segunda vez. Y Pedro recordó lo que le había dicho Jesús: «Antes que el gallo cante dos veces, me habrás negado tres». Y rompió a llorar.	72 And at once the cock crowed for the second time, and Peter recalled what Jesus had said to him,'Before the cock crows twice, you will have disowned me three times.' And he burst into tears.
