1 Grandes son en verdad tus juicios e inenarrables, por donde almas ignorantes se vinieron a engañar.	1 For great are your judgments, and hardly to be described; therefore the unruly souls were wrong.
2 Imaginaban los impíos que podrían oprimir a una nación santa; y se encontraron prisioneros de tinieblas, en larga noche trabados, recluidos en sus casas, desterrados de la Providencia eterna.	2 For when the lawless thought to enslave the holy nation, shackled with darkness, fettered by the long night, they lay confined beneath their own roofs as exiles from the eternal providence.
3 Creían que se mantendrían ocultos con sus secretos pecados bajo el oscuro velo del olvido; y se vieron dispersos, presa de terrible espanto, sobresaltados por apariciones.	3 For they who supposed their secret sins were hid under the dark veil of oblivion Were scattered in fearful trembling, terrified by apparitions.
4 Pues ni el escondrijo que les protegía les libraba del miedo; que también allí resonaban ruidos escalofriantes y se aparecían espectros sombríos de lúgubre aspecto.	4 For not even their inner chambers kept them fearless, for crashing sounds on all sides terrified them, and mute phantoms with somber looks appeared.
5 No había fuego intenso capaz de alumbrarles, ni las brillantes llamas de las estrellas alcanzaban a esclarecer aquella odiosa noche.	5 No force, even of fire, was able to give light, nor did the flaming brilliance of the stars succeed in lighting up that gloomy night.
6 Tan sólo una llamarada, por sí misma encendida, se dejaba entrever sembrando el terror; pues en su espanto, al desaparecer la visión, imaginaban más horrible aún lo que acababan de ver.	6 But only intermittent, fearful fires flashed through upon them; And in their terror they thought beholding these was worse than the times when that sight was no longer to be seen.
7 Los artificios de la magia resultaron ineficaces; con gran afrenta quedó refutado su pretendido saber,	7 And mockeries of the magic art were in readiness, and a jeering reproof of their vaunted shrewdness.
8 pues los que prometían expulsar miedos y sobresaltos de las almas enloquecidas, enloquecían ellos mismos con ridículos temores.	8 For they who undertook to banish fears and terrors from the sick soul themselves sickened with a ridiculous fear.
9 Incluso cuando otro espanto no les atemorizara, sobresaltados por el paso de los bichos y el silbido de los reptiles,	9 For even though no monstrous thing frightened them, they shook at the passing of insects and the hissing of reptiles,
10 se morían de miedo, y rehusaban mirar aquel aire que de ninguna manera podían evitar.	10 And perished trembling, reluctant to face even the air that they could nowhere escape.
11 Cobarde es, en efecto, la maldad y ella a sí misma se condena; acosada por la conciencia imagina siempre lo peor;	11 For wickedness, of its nature cowardly, testifies in its own condemnation, and because of a distressed conscience, always magnifies misfortunes.
12 pues no es otra cosa el miedo sino el abandono del apoyo que presta la reflexión;	12 For fear is nought but the surrender of the helps that come from reason;
13 y cuanto menos se cuenta con los recursos interiores, tanto mayor parece la desconocida causa que produce el tormento.	13 and the more one's expectation is of itself uncertain, the more one makes of not knowing the cause that brings on torment.
14 Durante aquella noche verdaderamente inerte, surgida de las profundidades del inerte Hades, en un mismo sueño sepultados,	14 So they, during that night, powerless though it was, that had come upon them from the recesses of a powerless nether world, while all sleeping the same sleep,
15 al invadirles un miedo repentino e inesperado, se vieron, de un lado, perseguidos de espectrales apariciones y, de otro, paralizados por el abandono de su alma.	15 Were partly smitten by fearsome apparitions and partly stricken by their souls' surrender; for fear came upon them, sudden and unexpected.
16 De este modo, cualquiera que en tal situación cayera, quedaba encarcelado, encerrado en aquella prisión sin hierros;	16 Thus, then, whoever was there fell into that unbarred prison and was kept confined.
17 ya fuera labrador o pastor, o bien un obrero dedicado en la soledad a su trabajo, sorprendido, soportaba la ineludible necesidad,	17 For whether one was a farmer, or a shepherd, or a worker at tasks in the wasteland, Taken unawares, he served out the inescapable sentence;
18 atados todos como estaban por una misma cadena de tinieblas. El silbido del viento, el melodioso canto de las aves en la enramada, el ruido regulado del agua que corría impetuosa,	18 for all were bound by the one bond of darkness. And were it only the whistling wind, or the melodious song of birds in the spreading branches, Or the steady sound of rushing water,
19 el horrísimo fragor de rocas que caían de las alturas, la invisible carrera de animales que saltando pasaban, el rugido de las fieras más salvajes, el eco que devolvían las oquedades de las montañas, todo les aterrorizaba y les dejaba paralizados.	19 or the rude crash of overthrown rocks, Or the unseen gallop of bounding animals, or the roaring cry of the fiercest beasts, Or an echo resounding from the hollow of the hills, these sounds, inspiring terror, paralyzed them.
20 Estaba entonces el mundo entero iluminado de luz esplendorosa, y, sin traba alguna, se ocupaba en sus quehaceres;	20 For the whole world shone with brilliant light and continued its works without interruption;
21 sólo sobre ellos se extendía pesada noche, imagen de las tinieblas que les esperaban recibir. Aunque ellos a sí mismos se eran más pesados que las tinieblas.	21 Over them alone was spread oppressive night, an image of the darkness that next should come upon them; yet they were to themselves more burdensome than the darkness.
