1 Al cabo de dos años. Faraón soñó que se encontraba parado a la vera del río.	1 After two years, Pharaoh saw a dream. He thought himself to be standing above a river,
2 De pronto suben del río siete vacas hermosas y lustrosas que se pusieron a pacer en el carrizal.	2 from which ascended seven cows, exceedingly beautiful and stout. And they pastured in marshy places.
3 Pero he aquí que detrás de aquéllas subían del río otras siete vacas, de mal aspecto y macilentas, las cuales se pararon cabe las otras vacas en la margen del río,	3 Likewise, another seven emerged from the river, filthy and thoroughly emaciated. And they pastured on the same bank of the river, in green places.
4 y las vacas de mal aspecto y macilentas se comieron a las siete vacas hermosas y lustrosas. Entonces Faraón se despertó.	4 And they devoured those whose appearance and condition of body was so wonderful. Pharaoh, having been awakened,
5 Y vuelto a dormirse soñó otra vez que siete espigas crecían en una misma caña, lozanas y buenas.	5 slept again, and he saw another dream. Seven ears of grain sprung up on one stalk, full and well-formed.
6 Pero he aquí que otras siete espigas flacas y asolanadas brotaron después de aquéllas	6 Likewise, other ears of grain, of the same number, rose up, thin and struck with blight,
7 y las espigas flacas consumieron a las siete lozanas y llenas. Despertó Faraón, y he aquí que era un sueño.	7 devouring all the beauty of the first. Pharaoh, when he awakened after his rest,
8 Aquella mañana estaba inquieto su espíritu y envió a llamar a todos los magos y a todos los sabios de Egipto. Faraón les contó su sueño, pero no hubo quien se lo interpretara a Faraón.	8 and when morning arrived, being terrified with fear, sent to all the interpreters of Egypt and to all of the wise men. And when they were summoned, he explained to them his dream; but there was no one who could interpret it.
9 Entonces el jefe de escanciadores habló a Faraón diciéndole: «Hoy me acuerdo de mi yerro.	9 Then at last the chief cupbearer, remembering, said, “I confess my sin.
10 Faraón se había enojado contra sus siervos y me había puesto bajo custodia en casa del jefe de los guardias a mí y al jefe de panaderos.	10 The king, being angry with his servants, ordered me and the chief miller of grain to be forced into the prison of the leader of the military.
11 Entonces tuvimos sendos sueños en una misma noche, tanto yo como él, cada uno con su sentido propio.	11 There, in one night, both of us saw a dream presaging the future.
12 Había allí con nosotros un muchacho hebreo, siervo del jefe de los guardias. Le contamos nuestro sueño, y él nos dio el sentido propio de cada cual.	12 In that place, there was a Hebrew, a servant of the same commander of the military, to whom we explained our dreams.
13 Y resultó que según nos lo había interpretado, así fue: A mí me restituyó Faraón en mi puesto, y a él le colgó.»	13 Whatever we heard was proven afterwards by the event of the matter. For I was restored to my office, and he was suspended on a cross.”
14 Faraón mandó llamar a José y le sacaron del pozo con premura, se afeitó y mudó de vestido y compareció ante Faraón.	14 Immediately, by the king’s authority, Joseph was led out of prison, and they shaved him. And changing his apparel, they presented him to him.
15 Dijo Faraón a José: «He tenido un sueño y no hay quien lo interprete, pero he oído decir de ti que te basta oír un sueño para interpretarlo.»	15 And he said to him, “I have seen dreams, and there is no one who can unfold them. I have heard that you are very wise at interpreting these.”
16 Respondió José a Faraón: «No hablemos de mí, que Dios responda en buena hora a Faraón.»	16 Joseph responded, “Apart from me, God will respond favorably to Pharaoh.”
17 Y refirió Faraón a José su sueño: «Resulta que estaba yo parado a la orilla del río,	17 Therefore, Pharaoh explained what he had seen: “I thought myself to be standing on the bank of a river,
18 cuando de pronto suben del río siete vacas lustrosas y de hermoso aspecto, las cuales pacían en el carrizal.	18 and seven cows climbed up from the river, exceedingly beautiful and full of flesh. And they grazed in a pasture of a marshy greenery.
19 Pero he aquí que otras siete vacas subían detrás de aquéllas, de muy ruin y mala catadura y macilentas, que jamás vi como aquéllas en toda la tierra de Egipto, de tan malas.	19 And behold, there followed after these, another seven cows, with such deformity and emaciation as I had never seen in the land of Egypt.
20 Y las siete vacas macilentas y malas se comieron a las siete vacas primeras, las lustrosas.	20 These devoured and consumed the first,
21 Pero una vez que las tuvieron dentro, ni se conocía que las tuviesen, pues su aspecto seguía tan malo como al principio. Entonces me desperté,	21 giving no indication of being full. But they remained in the same state of emaciation and squalor. Awakening, but being weighed down into sleep again,
22 y volví a ver en sueños cómo siete espigas crecían en una misma caña, henchidas y buenas.	22 I saw a dream. Seven ears of grain sprang up on one stalk, full and very beautiful.
23 Pero he aquí que otras siete espigas secas, flacas y asolanadas, brotaban después de aquéllas	23 Likewise, another seven, thin and struck with blight, rose up from the stalk.
24 y consumieron las espigas flacas a las siete espigas hermosas. Se lo he dicho a los magos, pero no hay quien me lo explique.»	24 And they devoured the beauty of the first. I explained this dream to the interpreters, and there is no one who can unfold it.”
25 José dijo a Faraón: «El sueño de Faraón es uno solo: Dios anuncia a Faraón lo que va a hacer.	25 Joseph responded: “The dream of the king is one. What God will do, he has revealed to Pharaoh.
26 Las siete vacas buenas son siete años de abundancia y las siete espigas buenas, siete años son: porque el sueño es uno solo.	26 The seven beautiful cows, and the seven full ears of grain, are seven years of abundance. And so the force of the dreams is understood to be the same.
27 Y las siete vacas macilentas y malas que subían después de aquéllas, son siete años; e igualmente las siete espigas flacas y asolanadas, es que habrá siete años de hambre.	27 Likewise, the seven thin and emaciated cows, which ascended after them, and the seven thin ears of grain, which were struck with the burning wind, are seven approaching years of famine.
28 Esto es lo que yo he dicho a Faraón. Lo que Dios va a hacer lo ha mostrado a Faraón.	28 These will be fulfilled in this order.
29 He aquí que vienen siete años de gran hartura en todo Egipto.	29 Behold, there will arrive seven years of great fertility throughout the entire land of Egypt.
30 Pero después sobrevendrán otros siete años de hambre y se olvidará toda la hartura en Egipto, pues el hambre asolará el país,	30 After this, there will follow another seven years, of such great barrenness that all the former abundance will be delivered into oblivion. For the famine will consume all the land,
31 y no se conocerá hartura en el país, de tanta hambre como habrá.	31 and the greatness of this destitution will cause the greatness of the abundance to be lost.
32 Y el que se haya repetido el sueño de Faraón dos veces, es porque la cosa es firme de parte de Dios, y Dios se apresura a realizarla.	32 Now, as to what you saw the second time, it is a dream pertaining to the same thing. It is an indication of its firmness, because the word of God shall be done, and it shall be completed swiftly.
33 Ahora, pues, fíjese Faraón en algún hombre inteligente y sabio, y póngalo al frente de Egipto.	33 Now therefore, let the king provide a wise and industrious man, and place him over the land of Egypt,
34 Hágalo así Faraón: ponga encargados al frente del país y exija el quinto a Egipto durante los siete años de abundancia.	34 so that he may appoint overseers throughout all the regions. And let a fifth part of the fruits, throughout the seven fertile years
35 Ellos recogerán todo el comestible de esos años buenos que vienen, almacenarán el grano a disposición de Faraón en las ciudades, y lo guardarán.	35 that now have already begun to occur, be gathered into storehouses. And let all the grain be stored away, under the power of Pharaoh, and let it be kept in the cities.
36 De esta forma quedarán registradas las reservas de alimento del país para los siete años de hambre que habrá en Egipto, y así no perecerá el país de hambre.»	36 And let it be prepared for the future famine of seven years, which will oppress Egypt, and then the land will not be consumed by destitution.”
37 Pareció bien el discurso a Faraón y a todos sus servidores,	37 The counsel pleased Pharaoh and all his ministers.
38 y dijo Faraón a sus servidores: «¿Acaso se encontrará otro como éste que tenga el espíritu de Dios?»	38 And he said to them, “Would we be able to find another such man, who is full of the Spirit of God?”
39 Y dijo Faraón a José: «Después de haberte dado a conocer Dios todo esto, no hay entendido ni sabio como tú.	39 Therefore, he said to Joseph: “Because God has revealed to you all that you have said, would I be able to find anyone wiser and as much like you?
40 Tú estarás al frente de mi casa, y de tu boca dependerá todo mi pueblo. Tan sólo el trono dejaré por encima de ti.»	40 You will be over my house, and to the authority of your mouth, all the people will show obedience. Only in one way, in the throne of the kingdom, will I go before you.”
41 Dijo Faraón a José: «Mira: te he puesto al frente de todo el país de Egipto.»	41 And again, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Behold, I have appointed you over the entire land of Egypt.”
42 Y Faraón se quitó el anillo de la mano y lo puso en la mano de José, le hizo vestir ropas de lino fino y le puso el collar de oro al cuello,	42 And he took the ring from his own hand, and he gave it into his hand. And he clothed him with a robe of fine linen, and he placed a necklace of gold around his neck.
43 luego le hizo montar en su segunda carroza, e iban gritando delante de él: «¡Abrek!» Así le puso al frente de todo el país de Egipto.	43 And he caused him to ascend upon his second swift chariot, with the herald proclaiming that everyone should bend their knee before him, and that they should know that he was governor over the entire land of Egypt.
44 Dijo Faraón a José: «Yo, Faraón: sin tu licencia no levantará nadie mano ni pie en todo Egipto.»	44 Likewise, the king said to Joseph: “I am Pharaoh: apart from your authority, no one will move hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”
45 Faraón llamó a José Safnat Panéai y le dio por mujer a Asnat, hija de Poti Fera, sacerdote de On. Y salió José con autoridad sobre el país de Egipto.	45 And he changed his name and called him, in the Egyptian tongue: ‘Savior of the world.’ And he gave him as a wife, Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis. And so Joseph went out into the land of Egypt.
46 Tenía José treinta años cuando compareció ante Faraón, rey de Egipto, y salió José de delante de Faraón, y recorrió todo Egipto.	46 (Now he was thirty years old when he stood in the sight of king Pharaoh.) And he traveled throughout the regions of Egypt.
47 La tierra produjo con profusión durante los siete años de abundancia	47 And the fertility of the seven years arrived. And when the grain fields were reduced to sheaves, these were gathered into the storehouses of Egypt.
48 y él hizo acopio de todos los víveres de los siete años en que hubo hartura en Egipto poniendo en cada ciudad los víveres de la campiña circundante.	48 And now all the abundance of grain was stored away in every city.
49 José recolectó grano como la arena del mar, una enormidad, hasta tener que desistir de contar porque era innumerable.	49 And there was such a great abundance of wheat that it was comparable to the sands of the sea, and its bounty exceeded all measure.
50 Antes que sobreviniesen los años de hambre, le nacieron a José dos hijos que le dio Asnat, la hija de Poti Fera, sacerdote de On.	50 Then, before the famine arrived, Joseph had two sons born, whom Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, bore for him.
51 Llamó José al primogénito Manasés, porque - decía - «Dios me ha hecho olvidar todo mi trabajo y la casa de mi padre,»	51 And he called the name of the firstborn Manasseh, saying, “God has caused me to forget all my labors and the house of my father.”
52 y al segundo le llamó Efraím, porque - decía - «me ha hecho fructificar Dios en el país de mi aflicción».	52 Likewise, he named the second Ephraim, saying, “God has caused me to increase in the land of my poverty.”
53 Concluyéronse los siete años de hartura que hubo en Egipto,	53 And so, when the seven years of fertility that occurred in Egypt had passed,
54 y empezaron a llegar los siete años de hambre como había predicho José. Hubo hambre en todas las regiones; pero en todo Egipto había pan.	54 the seven years of destitution, which Joseph had predicted, began to arrive. And the famine prevailed throughout the whole world, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt.
55 Toda la tierra de Egipto sintió también hambre, y el pueblo clamó a Faraón pidiendo pan. Y dijo Faraón a todo Egipto: «Id a José: haced lo que él os diga.»	55 And being hungry, the people cried out to Pharaoh, asking for provisions. And he said to them: “Go to Joseph. And do whatever he will tell you.”
56 - El hambre cundió par toda la haz de la tierra. - Entonces José sacó todas las existencias y abasteció de grano a Egipto. Arreciaba el hambre en Egipto;	56 Then the famine increased daily in all the land. And Joseph opened all of the storehouses and sold to the Egyptians. For the famine had oppressed them also.
57 de todos los países venían también a Egipto para proveerse comprando grano a José, porque el hambre cundía por toda la tierra.	57 And all the provinces came to Egypt, to buy food and to temper the misfortune of their destitution.
