1 Al cabo de dos años. Faraón soñó que se encontraba parado a la vera del río.	1 After two years Pharao had a dream. He thought he stood by the river,
2 De pronto suben del río siete vacas hermosas y lustrosas que se pusieron a pacer en el carrizal.	2 Out of which came up seven kine, very beautiful and fat: and they fed in marshy places.
3 Pero he aquí que detrás de aquéllas subían del río otras siete vacas, de mal aspecto y macilentas, las cuales se pararon cabe las otras vacas en la margen del río,	3 Other seven also came up out of the river, ill favoured, and leanfleshed: and they fed on the very bank of the river, in green places:
4 y las vacas de mal aspecto y macilentas se comieron a las siete vacas hermosas y lustrosas. Entonces Faraón se despertó.	4 And they devoured them, whose bodies were very beautiful and well conditioned. So Pharao awoke.
5 Y vuelto a dormirse soñó otra vez que siete espigas crecían en una misma caña, lozanas y buenas.	5 dummy verses inserted by amos
6 Pero he aquí que otras siete espigas flacas y asolanadas brotaron después de aquéllas	6 He slept again, and dreamed another dream: Seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk full and fair:
7 y las espigas flacas consumieron a las siete lozanas y llenas. Despertó Faraón, y he aquí que era un sueño.
8 Aquella mañana estaba inquieto su espíritu y envió a llamar a todos los magos y a todos los sabios de Egipto. Faraón les contó su sueño, pero no hubo quien se lo interpretara a Faraón.	8 Then seven other ears sprung up thin and blasted,
9 Entonces el jefe de escanciadores habló a Faraón diciéndole: «Hoy me acuerdo de mi yerro.	9 And devoured all the beauty of the former. Pharao awaked after his rest:
10 Faraón se había enojado contra sus siervos y me había puesto bajo custodia en casa del jefe de los guardias a mí y al jefe de panaderos.	10 And when morning was come, being struck with fear, he sent to all the interpreters of Egypt, and to all the wise men: and they being called for, he told them his dream, and there was not any one that could interpret it.
11 Entonces tuvimos sendos sueños en una misma noche, tanto yo como él, cada uno con su sentido propio.	11 Then at length the chief butler remembering, said: I confess my sin:
12 Había allí con nosotros un muchacho hebreo, siervo del jefe de los guardias. Le contamos nuestro sueño, y él nos dio el sentido propio de cada cual.	12 The king being angry with his servants, commanded me and the chief baker to be cast into the prison of the captain of the soldiers:
13 Y resultó que según nos lo había interpretado, así fue: A mí me restituyó Faraón en mi puesto, y a él le colgó.»	13 Where in one night both of us dreamed a dream foreboding things to come.
14 Faraón mandó llamar a José y le sacaron del pozo con premura, se afeitó y mudó de vestido y compareció ante Faraón.	14 There was there a young man a Hebrew, servant to the same captain of the soldiers: to whom we told our dreams,
15 Dijo Faraón a José: «He tenido un sueño y no hay quien lo interprete, pero he oído decir de ti que te basta oír un sueño para interpretarlo.»	15 And we heard what afterwards the event of the thing proved to be so. For I was restored to my office: and he was hanged upon a gibbet.
16 Respondió José a Faraón: «No hablemos de mí, que Dios responda en buena hora a Faraón.»	16 Forthwith at the king's command, Joseph was brought out of the prison, and they shaved him, and changing his apparel, brought him in to him.
17 Y refirió Faraón a José su sueño: «Resulta que estaba yo parado a la orilla del río,	17 And he said to him: I have dreamed dreams, and there is no one that can expound them: Now I have heard that thou art very wise at interpreting them.
18 cuando de pronto suben del río siete vacas lustrosas y de hermoso aspecto, las cuales pacían en el carrizal.	18 Joseph answered: Without me, God shall give Pharao a prosperous answer.
19 Pero he aquí que otras siete vacas subían detrás de aquéllas, de muy ruin y mala catadura y macilentas, que jamás vi como aquéllas en toda la tierra de Egipto, de tan malas.	19 So Pharao told what he had dreamed: Methought I stood upon the bank of the river,
20 Y las siete vacas macilentas y malas se comieron a las siete vacas primeras, las lustrosas.	20 And seven kine came up out of the river exceeding beautiful and full of flesh: and they grazed on green places in a marshy pasture.
21 Pero una vez que las tuvieron dentro, ni se conocía que las tuviesen, pues su aspecto seguía tan malo como al principio. Entonces me desperté,	21 And behold, there followed these, other seven kine, so very ill favoured and lean, that I never saw the like in the land of Egypt:
22 y volví a ver en sueños cómo siete espigas crecían en una misma caña, henchidas y buenas.	22 And the devoured and consumed the former,
23 Pero he aquí que otras siete espigas secas, flacas y asolanadas, brotaban después de aquéllas	23 And yet gave no mark of their being full: but were as lean and ill favoured as before. I awoke, and then fell asleep again,
24 y consumieron las espigas flacas a las siete espigas hermosas. Se lo he dicho a los magos, pero no hay quien me lo explique.»	24 And dreamed a dream: Seven ears of corn grew upon one stalk, full and very fair.
25 José dijo a Faraón: «El sueño de Faraón es uno solo: Dios anuncia a Faraón lo que va a hacer.	25 Other seven also thin and blasted, sprung of the stock:
26 Las siete vacas buenas son siete años de abundancia y las siete espigas buenas, siete años son: porque el sueño es uno solo.	26 And they devoured the beauty of the former: I told this dream to the conjecturers, and there is no man that can expound it.
27 Y las siete vacas macilentas y malas que subían después de aquéllas, son siete años; e igualmente las siete espigas flacas y asolanadas, es que habrá siete años de hambre.	27 Joseph answered: The king's dream is one: God hath shewn to Pharao what he is about to do.
28 Esto es lo que yo he dicho a Faraón. Lo que Dios va a hacer lo ha mostrado a Faraón.	28 The seven beautiful kine, and the seven full ears, are seven years of plenty: and both contain the same meaning of the dream.
29 He aquí que vienen siete años de gran hartura en todo Egipto.	29 And the seven lean and thin kine that came up after them, and the seven thin ears that were blasted with the burning wind, are seven years of famine to come:
30 Pero después sobrevendrán otros siete años de hambre y se olvidará toda la hartura en Egipto, pues el hambre asolará el país,	30 Which shall be fulfilled in this order:
31 y no se conocerá hartura en el país, de tanta hambre como habrá.	31 Behold, there shall come seven years of great plenty in the whole land of Egypt:
32 Y el que se haya repetido el sueño de Faraón dos veces, es porque la cosa es firme de parte de Dios, y Dios se apresura a realizarla.	32 After which shall follow other seven years of so great scacity, that all the abundance before shall be forgotten: for the famine shall consume all the land,
33 Ahora, pues, fíjese Faraón en algún hombre inteligente y sabio, y póngalo al frente de Egipto.	33 And the greatness of the scarcity shall destroy the greatness of the plenty.
34 Hágalo así Faraón: ponga encargados al frente del país y exija el quinto a Egipto durante los siete años de abundancia.	34 And for that thou didst see the second time a dream pertaining to the same thing: it is a token of the certainty, and that the word of God cometh to pass, and is fulfilled speedily.
35 Ellos recogerán todo el comestible de esos años buenos que vienen, almacenarán el grano a disposición de Faraón en las ciudades, y lo guardarán.	35 Now therefore let the king provide a wise and industrious man, and make him ruler over the land of Egypt:
36 De esta forma quedarán registradas las reservas de alimento del país para los siete años de hambre que habrá en Egipto, y así no perecerá el país de hambre.»	36 That he may appoint overseers over all the countries: and gather into barns the fifth part of the fruits, during the seven fruitful years,
37 Pareció bien el discurso a Faraón y a todos sus servidores,	37 That shall now presently ensue: and let all the corn be laid up under Pharao's hands and be reserved in the cities.
38 y dijo Faraón a sus servidores: «¿Acaso se encontrará otro como éste que tenga el espíritu de Dios?»	38 And let it be in readiness, against the famine of seven years to come, which shall oppress Egypt, and the land shall not consumed with scarcity.
39 Y dijo Faraón a José: «Después de haberte dado a conocer Dios todo esto, no hay entendido ni sabio como tú.	39 The counsel pleased Pharao and all his servants.
40 Tú estarás al frente de mi casa, y de tu boca dependerá todo mi pueblo. Tan sólo el trono dejaré por encima de ti.»	40 And he said to them: Can we find such another man, that is full of the spirit of God?
41 Dijo Faraón a José: «Mira: te he puesto al frente de todo el país de Egipto.»	41 He said therefore to Joseph: Seeing God hath shewn thee all that thou hast said, can I find one wiser and one like unto thee?
42 Y Faraón se quitó el anillo de la mano y lo puso en la mano de José, le hizo vestir ropas de lino fino y le puso el collar de oro al cuello,	42 Thou shalt be over my house, and at the commandment of thy mouth all the people shall obey: only in the kingly throne will I be above thee.
43 luego le hizo montar en su segunda carroza, e iban gritando delante de él: «¡Abrek!» Así le puso al frente de todo el país de Egipto.	43 And again Pharao said to Joseph: Behold, I have appointed thee over the whole land of Egypt.
44 Dijo Faraón a José: «Yo, Faraón: sin tu licencia no levantará nadie mano ni pie en todo Egipto.»	44 And he took his ring from his own hand, and gave it into his hand: and he put upon him a robe of silk, and put a chain of gold about his neck.
45 Faraón llamó a José Safnat Panéai y le dio por mujer a Asnat, hija de Poti Fera, sacerdote de On. Y salió José con autoridad sobre el país de Egipto.	45 And he made him go up into his second chariot, the crier proclaiming that all should bow their knee before him, and that they should know he was made govenor over the whole land of Egypt.
46 Tenía José treinta años cuando compareció ante Faraón, rey de Egipto, y salió José de delante de Faraón, y recorrió todo Egipto.	46 And the king said to Joseph: I am Pharao; without thy commandment no man shall move hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.
47 La tierra produjo con profusión durante los siete años de abundancia	47 And he turned his name, and called him in the Eyyptian tounge, The saviour of the world. And he gave him to wife Asenth the daughter of Putiphare priest of Heliopolis. Then Joseph went out to the land of Egypt:
48 y él hizo acopio de todos los víveres de los siete años en que hubo hartura en Egipto poniendo en cada ciudad los víveres de la campiña circundante.	48 (Now he was thirty years old when he stood before king Pharao) and he went round all the countries of Egypt.
49 José recolectó grano como la arena del mar, una enormidad, hasta tener que desistir de contar porque era innumerable.	49 And the fruitfulness of the seven years came: and the corm being bound up into sheaves was gathered together into the barns of Egypt.
50 Antes que sobreviniesen los años de hambre, le nacieron a José dos hijos que le dio Asnat, la hija de Poti Fera, sacerdote de On.	50 And all the abundance of grain was laid up in every city.
51 Llamó José al primogénito Manasés, porque - decía - «Dios me ha hecho olvidar todo mi trabajo y la casa de mi padre,»	51 And there was so great abundance of wheat, that it was equal to the sand of the sea, and the plenty exceeded measure.
52 y al segundo le llamó Efraím, porque - decía - «me ha hecho fructificar Dios en el país de mi aflicción».	52 And before the famine came, Joseph had two sons born: whom Aseneth the daughter of Putiphare priest of Heliopolis bore unto him.
53 Concluyéronse los siete años de hartura que hubo en Egipto,	53 And he called the name of the first born Manasses, saying: God hath made me to forget all my labours, and my father's house.
54 y empezaron a llegar los siete años de hambre como había predicho José. Hubo hambre en todas las regiones; pero en todo Egipto había pan.	54 And he named the second Epharaim, saying: God hath made me to grow in the land of my poverty.
55 Toda la tierra de Egipto sintió también hambre, y el pueblo clamó a Faraón pidiendo pan. Y dijo Faraón a todo Egipto: «Id a José: haced lo que él os diga.»	55 Now when the seven years of the plenty that had been in Egypt were past:
56 - El hambre cundió par toda la haz de la tierra. - Entonces José sacó todas las existencias y abasteció de grano a Egipto. Arreciaba el hambre en Egipto;	56 The seven years of scarcity, which Joseph had foretold, began to come: and the famine prevailed in the whole world, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt.
57 de todos los países venían también a Egipto para proveerse comprando grano a José, porque el hambre cundía por toda la tierra.	57 And when there also they began to be famished, the people cried to Pharao for food. And he said to them: Go to Joseph: and do all that he shall say to you.
	58 And the famine increased daily in all the land: and Joseph opened all the barns, and sold to the Egyptians: for the famine had oppressed them also.
