1 After Abimelech, Tola son of Puah, son of Dodo, rose to deliver Israel. He belonged to Issachar andlived at Shamir in the mountain country of Ephraim.	1 - Dopo Abimelec sorse come duce in Israele Tola figlio di Fua, zio paterno di Abimelec, uomo di Issacar, il quale abitò in Samir nelle montagne di Efraim,
2 He was judge in Israel for twenty-three years; he then died and was buried at Shamir.	2 e dopo aver giudicato Israele per ventitrè anni morì e venne sepolto in Samir.
3 After him rose Jair of Gilead, who judged Israel for twenty-two years.	3 A lui successe Jair il Galaadita, che guidò Israele per ventidue anni;
4 He had thirty sons who rode on thirty young donkeys and who owned thirty towns, stil known today asthe Encampments of Jair, in the territory of Gilead.	4 egli avea trenta figli che cavalcavano trenta asinelli ed erano principi di trenta città, situate nel paese di Galaad, le quali dal nome del padre si chiamano anche oggi Avot Jair, cioè borghi di Jair.
5 Jair then died and was buried at Kamon.	5 Morto Jair fu sepolto in una località chiamata Camon.
6 The Israelites again began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They served Baal and Astarte, and thegods of Aram and Sidon, the gods of Moab and those of the Ammonites and Philistines. They deserted Yahwehand served him no more.	6 I figli d'Israele aggiungendo ai vecchi peccati nuove colpe agirono male al cospetto del Signore e servirono agli idoli, ai Baalim e ad Astarot, e agli dèi della Siria, di Sidone, di Moab, dei figli di Ammon e dei Filistei, abbandonando il Signore e non prestandogli più culto alcuno.
7 Yahweh's anger then grew hot against Israel and he gave them over into the power of the Philistinesand the power of the Ammonites,	7 Contro di essi il Signore si sdegnò e li diede in mano ai Filistei e ai figli di Ammon,
8 who from that year onwards crushed and oppressed the Israelites for eighteen years -- all thoseIsraelites living on the other side of the Jordan in Amorite territory, in Gilead.	8 i quali angariarono e oppressero assai per diciotto anni tutti quelli che abitavano oltre il Giordano nel territorio degli Amorrei, cioè in Galaad,
9 Furthermore, the Ammonites would cross the Jordan and also make war on Judah, Benjamin and theHouse of Ephraim, so that Israel was in distress.	9 tanto che i figli di Ammon passato il Giordano poterono devastare Giuda, Beniamino ed Efraim, ed Israele si trovò in grande angustia.
10 The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and said, 'We have sinned against you, because we have turnedfrom Yahweh our God to serve Baals.'	10 Ricorsi allora al Signore, esclamarono: «Abbiamo peccato contro di te, abbandonando il Signore Dio nostro e servendo ai Baalim».
11 And Yahweh said to the Israelites, 'When Egyptians and Amorites, Ammonites and Philistines,	11 Ad essi il Signore parlò così: «Non furono forse gli Egiziani, gli Amorrei, i figli di Ammon, i Filistei,
12 when the Sidonians, Amalek and Midian oppressed you and you cried to me, did I not rescue youfrom their power?	12 come pure i Sidoni, gli Amaleciti e i Cananei ad opprimervi; e quando voi mi avete invocato non vi tolsi io dalle loro mani?
13 But it is you who have forsaken me and served other gods; and so I shall rescue you no more.	13 E ciò nonostante mi avete abbandonato e avete servito a divinità straniere. Perciò non tornerò di nuovo a liberarvi.
14 Go and cry to the gods whom you have chosen. Let them rescue you in your time of trouble.'	14 Andate ad invocare gli dèi che vi siete eletti, ed essi vi liberino nel tempo dell'angoscia».
15 The Israelites replied to Yahweh, 'We have sinned. Treat us as you see fit, but please rescue ustoday.'	15 Ma i figli d'Israele gridarono al Signore: «Abbiamo peccato; tu farai di noi quello che a te piace; soltanto, [te ne preghiamo] liberaci adesso».
16 They got rid of their foreign gods and served Yahweh, who could bear Israel's suffering no longer.	16 E dicendo questo gettarono fuori dal loro paese gli dèi stranieri e si misero a servire il Signore Iddio, il quale ebbe compassione delle loro miserie.
17 The Ammonites gathered and pitched camp in Gilead. The Israelites ral ied and pitched camp atMizpah.	17 Frattanto i figli di Ammon con grande strepito piantaron le loro tende in Galaad e contro loro si raccolsero i figli d'Israele, che si accamparono in Masfa.
18 The people, the chieftains of Gilead, then said to one another, 'Who wil volunteer to attack theAmmonites? He shall be chief of al who live in Gilead!'	18 I principi di Galaad si dissero a vicenda: «Il primo di noi che assalirà i figli di Ammon sia il capo del popolo di Galaad».
