After Abimelech, Tola son of Puah, son of Dodo, rose to deliver Israel. He belonged to Issachar andlived at Shamir in the mountain country of Ephraim.1 After Abimelech there rose to save Israel the Issacharite Tola, son of Puah, son of Dodo, a resident of Shamir in the mountain region of Ephraim.
He was judge in Israel for twenty-three years; he then died and was buried at Shamir.2 When he had judged Israel twenty-three years, he died and was buried in Shamir.
After him rose Jair of Gilead, who judged Israel for twenty-two years.3 Jair the Gileadite came after him and judged Israel twenty-two years.
He had thirty sons who rode on thirty young donkeys and who owned thirty towns, stil known today asthe Encampments of Jair, in the territory of Gilead.4 He had thirty sons who rode on thirty saddle-asses and possessed thirty cities in the land of Gilead; these are called Havvoth-jair to the present day.
Jair then died and was buried at Kamon.5 Jair died and was buried in Kamon.
The Israelites again began doing what is evil in Yahweh's eyes. They served Baal and Astarte, and thegods of Aram and Sidon, the gods of Moab and those of the Ammonites and Philistines. They deserted Yahwehand served him no more.6 The Israelites again offended the LORD, serving the Baals and Ashtaroths, the gods of Aram, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. Since they had abandoned the LORD and would not serve him,
Yahweh's anger then grew hot against Israel and he gave them over into the power of the Philistinesand the power of the Ammonites,7 the LORD became angry with Israel and allowed them to fall into the power of (the Philistines and) the Ammonites.
who from that year onwards crushed and oppressed the Israelites for eighteen years -- all thoseIsraelites living on the other side of the Jordan in Amorite territory, in Gilead.8 For eighteen years they afflicted and oppressed the Israelites in Bashan, and all the Israelites in the Amorite land beyond the Jordan in Gilead.
Furthermore, the Ammonites would cross the Jordan and also make war on Judah, Benjamin and theHouse of Ephraim, so that Israel was in distress.9 The Ammonites also crossed the Jordan to fight against Judah, Benjamin, and the house of Ephraim, so that Israel was in great distress.
The Israelites then cried to Yahweh and said, 'We have sinned against you, because we have turnedfrom Yahweh our God to serve Baals.'10 Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD, "We have sinned against you; we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals."
And Yahweh said to the Israelites, 'When Egyptians and Amorites, Ammonites and Philistines,11 The LORD answered the Israelites: "Did not the Egyptians, the Amorites, the Ammonites, the Philistines,
when the Sidonians, Amalek and Midian oppressed you and you cried to me, did I not rescue youfrom their power?12 the Sidonians, the Amalekites, and the Midianites oppress you? Yet when you cried out to me, and I saved you from their grasp,
But it is you who have forsaken me and served other gods; and so I shall rescue you no more.13 you still forsook me and worshiped other gods. Therefore I will save you no more.
Go and cry to the gods whom you have chosen. Let them rescue you in your time of trouble.'14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen; let them save you now that you are in distress."
The Israelites replied to Yahweh, 'We have sinned. Treat us as you see fit, but please rescue ustoday.'15 But the Israelites said to the LORD, "We have sinned. Do to us whatever you please. Only save us this day."
They got rid of their foreign gods and served Yahweh, who could bear Israel's suffering no longer.16 And they cast out the foreign gods from their midst and served the LORD, so that he grieved over the misery of Israel.
The Ammonites gathered and pitched camp in Gilead. The Israelites ral ied and pitched camp atMizpah.17 The Ammonites had gathered for war and encamped in Gilead, while the Israelites assembled and encamped in Mizpah.
The people, the chieftains of Gilead, then said to one another, 'Who wil volunteer to attack theAmmonites? He shall be chief of al who live in Gilead!'18 And among the people the princes of Gilead said to one another, "The one who begins the war against the Ammonites shall be leader of all the inhabitants of Gilead."
