NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Now after Joshua's death, the Israelites consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Which of us is to march on theCanaanites first, to make war on them?'1 After the death of Josue the children of Israel consulted the Lord, saying: Who shall go up before us against the Chanaanite, and shall be the leader of the war?
And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to march on them first; I am delivering the country into his hands.'2 And the Lord said: Juda shall go up: behold I have delivered the land into his hands.
Judah then said to his brother Simeon, 'March with me into the territory al otted to me; we shall makewar on the Canaanites, and then I in my turn shal march into your territory with you.' And Simeon marched withhim.3 And Juda said to Simeon his brother: Come up with me into my lot, and fight against the Chanaanite, that I also may go along with thee into thy lot. And Simeon went with him.
So Judah marched on them, and Yahweh delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, andthey defeated them at Bezek-ten thousand of them!4 And Juda went up, and the Lord delivered the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite into their hands: and they slew of them in Bezec ten thousand men.
At Bezek they came upon Adoni-Bezek; they joined battle with him and defeated the Canaanites andPerizzites.5 And they found Adonibezec in Bezec, and fought against him, and they defeated the Chanaanite, and the Pherezite.
Adoni-Bezek took to flight, but they chased and captured him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.6 And Adonibezec fled: and they pursued after him and took him, and cut off his fingers and toes.
Adoni-Bezek said, 'Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up the crumbsunder my table. As I did, God does to me.' He was taken to Jerusalem, and there he died.7 And Adonibezec said: Seventy kings having their fingers and toes cut off, gathered up the leavings of the meat under my table: as I have done, so hath God requited me. And they brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
(The sons of Judah attacked Jerusalem and took it: they put its people to the sword and set fire to thecity.)8 And the children of Juda besieging Jerusalem, took it, and put it to the sword, and set the whole city on fire.
After this the sons of Judah went down to make war on the Canaanites who were living in the highlands, the Negeb and the lowlands.9 And afterwards they went down and fought against the Chanaanite, who dwelt in the mountains, and in the south, and in the plains.
Judah next marched on the Canaanites living in Hebron -- the name of Hebron in olden days wasKiriath-Arba -- and beat Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.10 And Juda going forward against the Chanaanite, that dwelt in Hebron (the name whereof was in former times Cariath-Arbe) slew Sesai, and Ahiman, and Tholmai:
From there, he marched on the inhabitants of Debir -- the name of Debir in olden days was Kiriath-Sepher.11 And departing from thence he went to the inhabitants of Dabir, the ancient name of which was Cariath-Sepher, that is, the city of letters.
Caleb said, 'To the man who conquers and captures Kiriath-Sepher, I shal give my daughter Achsahas wife.'12 And Caleb said: He that shall take Cariath-Sepher, and lay it waste, to him will I give my daughter Axa to wife.
The man who captured it was Othniel son of Kenaz, younger brother of Caleb, who gave him hisdaughter Achsah as wife.13 And Othoniel the son of Cenez, the younger brother of Caleb, having taken it, he gave him Axa his daughter to wife.
When she arrived, he urged her to ask her father for arable land, but when she alighted from thedonkey and Caleb asked her, 'What is the matter?'14 And as she was going on her way her husband admonished her to ask a field of her father. And as she sighed sitting on her ass, Caleb said to her: What aileth thee?
she said to him, 'Grant me a blessing! As the land you have given me is the Negeb, give me springs ofwater, too!' So Caleb gave her what she wanted: the upper springs and the lower springs.15 But she answered: Give me a blessing, for thou hast given me a dry land: give me also a watery land. So Caleb gave her the upper and the nether watery ground.
The sons of Hobab the Kenite, father-in-law of Moses, marched up with the sons of Judah from theCity of Palm Trees into the desert of Judah lying in the Negeb of Arad, where they went and settled among thepeople.16 And the children of the Cinite, the kinsman of Moses, went up from the city of palms, with the children of Juda into the wilderness of his lot, which is at the south side of Arad, and they dwelt with him.
Judah then set out with his brother Simeon. They beat the Canaanites who lived in Zephath anddelivered it over to the curse of destruction; hence the town was given the name of Hormah.17 And Juda went with Simeon his brother, and they together defeated the Chanaanites that dwelt in Sephaath, and slew them. And the name of the city was called Horma, that is, Anathema.
Judah then captured Gaza and its territory, Ashkelon and its territory, Ekron and its territory.AndYahweh was with Judah, who made himself master of the highlands;18 And Juda took Gaza with its confines, and Ascalon and Accaron with their confines.
he could not, however, dispossess the inhabitants of the plain, since they had iron chariots.19 And the Lord was with Juda, and he possessed the hill country: but was not able to destroy the inhabitants of the valley, because they had many chariots armed with scythes.
As Moses had directed, Hebron was given to Caleb, and he drove the three sons of Anak out of it.20 And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said, who destroyed out of it the three sons of Enac.
As regards the Jebusites living in Jerusalem, the sons of Benjamin did not dispossess them, and theJebusites have been living in Jerusalem with the sons of Benjamin ever since.21 But the sons of Benjamin did not destroy the Jebusites that inhabited Jerusalem: and the Jebusite hath dwelt with the sons of Benjamin in Jerusalem until this present day.
Similarly, the House of Joseph marched on Bethel, and Yahweh was with them.22 The house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them.
The House of Joseph made a reconnaissance of Bethel. (In olden days, the name of the town wasLuz.)23 For when they were besieging the city, which before was called Luza,
The scouts saw a man coming out of the town and said to him, 'Show us how to get into the town andwe shal show you faithful love.'24 They saw a man coming out of the city, and they said to him: Shew us the entrance into the city, and we will shew thee mercy.
And when he had shown them a way into the town, they put the town to the sword but let the man andhis whole clan go.25 And when he had shewn them, they smote the city with the edge of the sword: but that man and all his kindred they let go:
The man went off to the country of the Hittites and built a town which he called Luz; and that has been its name ever since.26 Who being sent away, went into the land of Hethim, and built there a city, and called it Luza: which is so called until this day.
Manasseh did not dispossess Beth-Shean and its dependencies, nor Taanach and its dependencies, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its dependencies, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its dependencies, nor theinhabitants of Megiddo and its dependencies; in those parts the Canaanites held their ground.27 Manasses also did not destroy Bethsan, and Thanac with their villages, nor the inhabitants of Dor, and Jeblaam, and Mageddo with their villages. And the Chanaanite began to dwell with them.
But when the Israelites became stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labour, althoughthey did not dispossess them.28 But after Israel was grown strong he made them tributaries, and would not destroy them.
Nor did Ephraim dispossess the Canaanites living in Gezer; thus, the Canaanites went on living inGezer with him.29 Ephraim also did not slay the Chanaanite that dwelt in Gazer, but dwelt with him.
Zebulun did not dispossess the inhabitants of Kitron or of Nahalol. The Canaanites lived on withZebulun but were subjected to forced labour.30 Zabulon destroyed not the inhabitants of Cetron, and Naalol: but the Chanaanite dwelt among them, and became their tributaries.
Asher did not dispossess the inhabitants of Acco, nor those of Sidon, of Mahalab, of Achzib, of Helbah,of Aphek or of Rehob.31 Aser also destroyed not the inhabitants of Accho, and of Sidon, of Ahalab, and of Achazib, and of Helba, and of Aphec, and of Rohob:
So the Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the country, not having dispossessed them.32 And he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites the inhabitants of that land, and did not slay them.
Naphtali did not dispossess the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh or of Beth-Anath; they settled among theCanaanite inhabitants of the country, but the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh and of Beth-Anath were subjected toforced labour for them.33 Nephtali also destroyed not the inhabitants of Bethsames, and of Bethanath: and he dwelt in the midst of the Chanaanites the inhabitants of the land, and the Bethsamites and Bethanites were tributaries to him.
The Amorites drove the Danites back into the highlands and would not let them come down into theplain.34 And the Amorrhite straitened the children of Dan in the mountain, and gave them not place to go down to the plain:
The Amorites held their ground at Har -- Heres and Shaalbim, but when the hand of the House ofJoseph grew heavier, they were subjected to forced labour. (35 And he dwelt in the mountain Hares, that is, of potsherds, in Aialon and Salebim. And the hand of the house of Joseph was heavy upon him, and he became tributary to him.
The territory of the Edomites begins at the Ascent of Scorpions, runs to the Rock and continues onupwards.)36 And the border of the Amorrhite was from the ascent of the scorpion, the rock, and the higher places.
