1 Now after Joshua's death, the Israelites consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Which of us is to march on theCanaanites first, to make war on them?'	1 ויהי אחרי מות יהושע וישאלו בני ישראל ביהוה לאמר מי יעלה לנו אל הכנעני בתחלה להלחם בו
2 And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to march on them first; I am delivering the country into his hands.'	2 ויאמר יהוה יהודה יעלה הנה נתתי את הארץ בידו
3 Judah then said to his brother Simeon, 'March with me into the territory al otted to me; we shall makewar on the Canaanites, and then I in my turn shal march into your territory with you.' And Simeon marched withhim.	3 ויאמר יהודה לשמעון אחיו עלה אתי בגורלי ונלחמה בכנעני והלכתי גם אני אתך בגורלך וילך אתו שמעון
4 So Judah marched on them, and Yahweh delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, andthey defeated them at Bezek-ten thousand of them!	4 ויעל יהודה ויתן יהוה את הכנעני והפרזי בידם ויכום בבזק עשרת אלפים איש
5 At Bezek they came upon Adoni-Bezek; they joined battle with him and defeated the Canaanites andPerizzites.	5 וימצאו את אדני בזק בבזק וילחמו בו ויכו את הכנעני ואת הפרזי
6 Adoni-Bezek took to flight, but they chased and captured him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.	6 וינס אדני בזק וירדפו אחריו ויאחזו אתו ויקצצו את בהנות ידיו ורגליו
7 Adoni-Bezek said, 'Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up the crumbsunder my table. As I did, God does to me.' He was taken to Jerusalem, and there he died.	7 ויאמר אדני בזק שבעים מלכים בהנות ידיהם ורגליהם מקצצים היו מלקטים תחת שלחני כאשר עשיתי כן שלם לי אלהים ויביאהו ירושלם וימת שם
8 (The sons of Judah attacked Jerusalem and took it: they put its people to the sword and set fire to thecity.)	8 וילחמו בני יהודה בירושלם וילכדו אותה ויכוה לפי חרב ואת העיר שלחו באש
9 After this the sons of Judah went down to make war on the Canaanites who were living in the highlands,the Negeb and the lowlands.	9 ואחר ירדו בני יהודה להלחם בכנעני יושב ההר והנגב והשפלה
10 Judah next marched on the Canaanites living in Hebron -- the name of Hebron in olden days wasKiriath-Arba -- and beat Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.	10 וילך יהודה אל הכנעני היושב בחברון ושם חברון לפנים קרית ארבע ויכו את ששי ואת אחימן ואת תלמי
11 From there, he marched on the inhabitants of Debir -- the name of Debir in olden days was Kiriath-Sepher.	11 וילך משם אל יושבי דביר ושם דביר לפנים קרית ספר
12 Caleb said, 'To the man who conquers and captures Kiriath-Sepher, I shal give my daughter Achsahas wife.'	12 ויאמר כלב אשר יכה את קרית ספר ולכדה ונתתי לו את עכסה בתי לאשה
13 The man who captured it was Othniel son of Kenaz, younger brother of Caleb, who gave him hisdaughter Achsah as wife.	13 וילכדה עתניאל בן קנז אחי כלב הקטן ממנו ויתן לו את עכסה בתו לאשה
14 When she arrived, he urged her to ask her father for arable land, but when she alighted from thedonkey and Caleb asked her, 'What is the matter?'	14 ויהי בבואה ותסיתהו לשאול מאת אביה השדה ותצנח מעל החמור ויאמר לה כלב מה לך
15 she said to him, 'Grant me a blessing! As the land you have given me is the Negeb, give me springs ofwater, too!' So Caleb gave her what she wanted: the upper springs and the lower springs.	15 ותאמר לו הבה לי ברכה כי ארץ הנגב נתתני ונתתה לי גלת מים ויתן לה כלב את גלת עלית ואת גלת תחתית
16 The sons of Hobab the Kenite, father-in-law of Moses, marched up with the sons of Judah from theCity of Palm Trees into the desert of Judah lying in the Negeb of Arad, where they went and settled among thepeople.	16 ובני קיני חתן משה עלו מעיר התמרים את בני יהודה מדבר יהודה אשר בנגב ערד וילך וישב את העם
17 Judah then set out with his brother Simeon. They beat the Canaanites who lived in Zephath anddelivered it over to the curse of destruction; hence the town was given the name of Hormah.	17 וילך יהודה את שמעון אחיו ויכו את הכנעני יושב צפת ויחרימו אותה ויקרא את שם העיר חרמה
18 Judah then captured Gaza and its territory, Ashkelon and its territory, Ekron and its territory.AndYahweh was with Judah, who made himself master of the highlands;	18 וילכד יהודה את עזה ואת גבולה ואת אשקלון ואת גבולה ואת עקרון ואת גבולה
19 he could not, however, dispossess the inhabitants of the plain, since they had iron chariots.	19 ויהי יהוה את יהודה וירש את ההר כי לא להוריש את ישבי העמק כי רכב ברזל להם
20 As Moses had directed, Hebron was given to Caleb, and he drove the three sons of Anak out of it.	20 ויתנו לכלב את חברון כאשר דבר משה ויורש משם את שלשה בני הענק
21 As regards the Jebusites living in Jerusalem, the sons of Benjamin did not dispossess them, and theJebusites have been living in Jerusalem with the sons of Benjamin ever since.	21 ואת היבוסי ישב ירושלם לא הורישו בני בנימן וישב היבוסי את בני בנימן בירושלם עד היום הזה
22 Similarly, the House of Joseph marched on Bethel, and Yahweh was with them.	22 ויעלו בית יוסף גם הם בית אל ויהוה עמם
23 The House of Joseph made a reconnaissance of Bethel. (In olden days, the name of the town wasLuz.)	23 ויתירו בית יוסף בבית אל ושם העיר לפנים לוז
24 The scouts saw a man coming out of the town and said to him, 'Show us how to get into the town andwe shal show you faithful love.'	24 ויראו השמרים איש יוצא מן העיר ויאמרו לו הראנו נא את מבוא העיר ועשינו עמך חסד
25 And when he had shown them a way into the town, they put the town to the sword but let the man andhis whole clan go.	25 ויראם את מבוא העיר ויכו את העיר לפי חרב ואת האיש ואת כל משפחתו שלחו
26 The man went off to the country of the Hittites and built a town which he called Luz; and that has been its name ever since.	26 וילך האיש ארץ החתים ויבן עיר ויקרא שמה לוז הוא שמה עד היום הזה
27 Manasseh did not dispossess Beth-Shean and its dependencies, nor Taanach and its dependencies,nor the inhabitants of Dor and its dependencies, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its dependencies, nor theinhabitants of Megiddo and its dependencies; in those parts the Canaanites held their ground.	27 ולא הוריש מנשה את בית שאן ואת בנותיה ואת תענך ואת בנתיה ואת ישב דור ואת בנותיה ואת יושבי יבלעם ואת בנתיה ואת יושבי מגדו ואת בנותיה ויואל הכנעני לשבת בארץ הזאת
28 But when the Israelites became stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labour, althoughthey did not dispossess them.	28 ויהי כי חזק ישראל וישם את הכנעני למס והוריש לא הורישו
29 Nor did Ephraim dispossess the Canaanites living in Gezer; thus, the Canaanites went on living inGezer with him.	29 ואפרים לא הוריש את הכנעני היושב בגזר וישב הכנעני בקרבו בגזר
30 Zebulun did not dispossess the inhabitants of Kitron or of Nahalol. The Canaanites lived on withZebulun but were subjected to forced labour.	30 זבולן לא הוריש את יושבי קטרון ואת יושבי נהלל וישב הכנעני בקרבו ויהיו למס
31 Asher did not dispossess the inhabitants of Acco, nor those of Sidon, of Mahalab, of Achzib, of Helbah,of Aphek or of Rehob.	31 אשר לא הוריש את ישבי עכו ואת יושבי צידון ואת אחלב ואת אכזיב ואת חלבה ואת אפיק ואת רחב
32 So the Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the country, not having dispossessed them.	32 וישב האשרי בקרב הכנעני ישבי הארץ כי לא הורישו
33 Naphtali did not dispossess the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh or of Beth-Anath; they settled among theCanaanite inhabitants of the country, but the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh and of Beth-Anath were subjected toforced labour for them.	33 נפתלי לא הוריש את ישבי בית שמש ואת ישבי בית ענת וישב בקרב הכנעני ישבי הארץ וישבי בית שמש ובית ענת היו להם למס
34 The Amorites drove the Danites back into the highlands and would not let them come down into theplain.	34 וילחצו האמרי את בני דן ההרה כי לא נתנו לרדת לעמק
35 The Amorites held their ground at Har -- Heres and Shaalbim, but when the hand of the House ofJoseph grew heavier, they were subjected to forced labour. (	35 ויואל האמרי לשבת בהר חרס באילון ובשעלבים ותכבד יד בית יוסף ויהיו למס
36 The territory of the Edomites begins at the Ascent of Scorpions, runs to the Rock and continues onupwards.)	36 וגבול האמרי ממעלה עקרבים מהסלע ומעלה
