NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Now after Joshua's death, the Israelites consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Which of us is to march on theCanaanites first, to make war on them?'1 Post mortem Iosue consulue runt filii Israel Dominum dicen tes: “ Quis nostrum primus ascendet ad Chananaeum ad pugnandum contra eum? ”.
And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to march on them first; I am delivering the country into his hands.'2 Dixitque Dominus: “ Iudas ascendet: ecce tradidi terram in manus eius ”.
Judah then said to his brother Simeon, 'March with me into the territory al otted to me; we shall makewar on the Canaanites, and then I in my turn shal march into your territory with you.' And Simeon marched withhim.3 Et ait Iudas Simeoni fratri suo: “ Ascende mecum in sorte mea, et pugnemus contra Chananaeum, et ego pergam tecum in sorte tua ”. Et abiit cum eo Simeon.
So Judah marched on them, and Yahweh delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, andthey defeated them at Bezek-ten thousand of them!4 Ascenditque Iudas, et tradidit Dominus Chananaeum ac Pherezaeum in manus eorum, et percusserunt in Bezec decem milia virorum.
At Bezek they came upon Adoni-Bezek; they joined battle with him and defeated the Canaanites andPerizzites.5 Inveneruntque Adonibezec in Bezec et pugnaverunt contra eum ac percusserunt Chananaeum et Pherezaeum.
Adoni-Bezek took to flight, but they chased and captured him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.6 Fugit autem Adonibezec, quem persecuti comprehenderunt, caesis pollicibus manuum eius ac pedum.
Adoni-Bezek said, 'Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up the crumbsunder my table. As I did, God does to me.' He was taken to Jerusalem, and there he died.7 Dixitque Adonibezec: “ Septuaginta reges, amputatis manuum ac pedum pollicibus, colligebant sub mensa mea ciborum reliquias. Sicut feci, ita reddidit mihi Deus ”. Adduxeruntque eum in Ierusalem, et ibi mortuus est.
(The sons of Judah attacked Jerusalem and took it: they put its people to the sword and set fire to thecity.)8 Oppugnantes ergo filii Iudae Ierusalem ceperunt eam; et percusserunt in ore gladii tradentes incendio civitatem.
After this the sons of Judah went down to make war on the Canaanites who were living in the highlands, the Negeb and the lowlands.9 Et postea descendentes pugnaverunt contra Chananaeum, qui habitabat in montanis et in Nageb et in Sephela.
Judah next marched on the Canaanites living in Hebron -- the name of Hebron in olden days wasKiriath-Arba -- and beat Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.10 Pergensque Iuda contra Chananaeum, qui habitabat in Hebron, cui nomen fuit antiquitus Cariatharbe, percussit Sesai et Ahiman et Tholmai.
From there, he marched on the inhabitants of Debir -- the name of Debir in olden days was Kiriath-Sepher.11 Atque inde profectus abiit ad habitatores Dabir, cuius nomen vetus erat Cariathsepher (id est civitas Litterarum).
Caleb said, 'To the man who conquers and captures Kiriath-Sepher, I shal give my daughter Achsahas wife.'12 Dixitque Chaleb: “ Qui percusserit Cariathsepher et ceperit eam, dabo ei Axam filiam meam uxorem ”.
The man who captured it was Othniel son of Kenaz, younger brother of Caleb, who gave him hisdaughter Achsah as wife.13 Cumque cepisset eam Othoniel filius Cenez frater Chaleb minor, dedit ei Axam filiam suam coniugem.
When she arrived, he urged her to ask her father for arable land, but when she alighted from thedonkey and Caleb asked her, 'What is the matter?'14 Quae cum veniret, incitavit eum, ut peteret a patre suo agrum. Demisit ergo se de asino, et dixit ei Chaleb: “ Quid habes? ”.
she said to him, 'Grant me a blessing! As the land you have given me is the Negeb, give me springs ofwater, too!' So Caleb gave her what she wanted: the upper springs and the lower springs.15 At illa respondit: “ Da mihi benedictionem; quia terram arentem dedisti mihi, da et irriguam aquis ”. Dedit ergo ei Chaleb irriguum superius et irriguum inferius.
The sons of Hobab the Kenite, father-in-law of Moses, marched up with the sons of Judah from theCity of Palm Trees into the desert of Judah lying in the Negeb of Arad, where they went and settled among thepeople.16 Filii autem Hobab Cinaei cognati Moysi ascenderunt de civitate Palmarum cum filiis Iudae in desertum Iudae, quod est ad meridiem Arad, et habitaverunt cum Amalecitis.
Judah then set out with his brother Simeon. They beat the Canaanites who lived in Zephath anddelivered it over to the curse of destruction; hence the town was given the name of Hormah.17 Abiit autem Iudas cum Simeone fratre suo et percusserunt simul Chananaeum, qui habitabat in Sephath, et percusserunt urbem anathemate. Vocatumque est nomen eius Horma (id est Anathema).
Judah then captured Gaza and its territory, Ashkelon and its territory, Ekron and its territory.AndYahweh was with Judah, who made himself master of the highlands;18 Cepitque Iudas Gazam cum finibus suis et Ascalonem atque Accaron cum terminis suis.
he could not, however, dispossess the inhabitants of the plain, since they had iron chariots.19 Fuitque Dominus cum Iuda, et montana possedit; nec potuit expellere habitatores vallis, quia falcatis curribus abundabant.
As Moses had directed, Hebron was given to Caleb, and he drove the three sons of Anak out of it.20 Dederuntque Chaleb Hebron, sicut dixerat Moyses, qui expulit ex ea tres filios Enac.
As regards the Jebusites living in Jerusalem, the sons of Benjamin did not dispossess them, and theJebusites have been living in Jerusalem with the sons of Benjamin ever since.21 Iebusaeum autem habitatorem Ierusalem non expulerunt filii Beniamin, habitavitque Iebusaeus cum filiis Beniamin in Ierusalem usque in praesentem diem.
Similarly, the House of Joseph marched on Bethel, and Yahweh was with them.22 Domus quoque Ioseph ascendit Bethel, fuitque Dominus cum eis.
The House of Joseph made a reconnaissance of Bethel. (In olden days, the name of the town wasLuz.)23 Nam, cum explorarent urbem, quae prius Luza vocabatur,
The scouts saw a man coming out of the town and said to him, 'Show us how to get into the town andwe shal show you faithful love.'24 viderunt custodes hominem egredientem de civitate dixeruntque ad eum: “ Ostende nobis introitum civitatis, et faciemus tecum misericordiam ”.
And when he had shown them a way into the town, they put the town to the sword but let the man andhis whole clan go.25 Qui cum ostendisset eis, percusserunt urbem in ore gladii; hominem autem illum et omnem cognationem eius dimiserunt.
The man went off to the country of the Hittites and built a town which he called Luz; and that has been its name ever since.26 Qui dimissus abiit in terram Hetthim et aedificavit ibi civitatem vocavitque eam Luzam, quae ita appellatur usque in praesentem diem.
Manasseh did not dispossess Beth-Shean and its dependencies, nor Taanach and its dependencies, nor the inhabitants of Dor and its dependencies, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its dependencies, nor theinhabitants of Megiddo and its dependencies; in those parts the Canaanites held their ground.27 Manasses quoque non occupavit Bethsan et Thanach cum viculis suis nec expulit habitatores Dor et Ieblaam et Mageddo cum viculis suis; mansitque Chananaeus in terra hac.
But when the Israelites became stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labour, althoughthey did not dispossess them.28 Postquam autem confortatus est Israel, fecit eos tributarios et expellere noluit.
Nor did Ephraim dispossess the Canaanites living in Gezer; thus, the Canaanites went on living inGezer with him.29 Ephraim etiam non expulit Chananaeum, qui habitabat in Gazer, sed habitavit Chananaeus in medio eius in Gazer.
Zebulun did not dispossess the inhabitants of Kitron or of Nahalol. The Canaanites lived on withZebulun but were subjected to forced labour.30 Zabulon non expulit habitatores Cetron et Naalol, sed habitavit Chananaeus in medio eius factusque est ei tributarius.
Asher did not dispossess the inhabitants of Acco, nor those of Sidon, of Mahalab, of Achzib, of Helbah,of Aphek or of Rehob.31 Aser quoque non expulit habitatores Achcho et Sidonis, Ahalab et Achazib et Helba et Aphec et Rohob;
So the Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the country, not having dispossessed them.32 habitavitque Aser in medio Chananaei habitatoris illius terrae, quia non expulit eum.
Naphtali did not dispossess the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh or of Beth-Anath; they settled among theCanaanite inhabitants of the country, but the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh and of Beth-Anath were subjected toforced labour for them.33 Nephthali non expulit habitatores Bethsames et Bethanath et habitavit inter Chananaeum habitatorem terrae, fueruntque ei Bethsamitae et Bethanitae tributarii.
The Amorites drove the Danites back into the highlands and would not let them come down into theplain.34 Artavitque Amorraeus filios Dan in montem nec dedit eis locum, ut ad planiora descenderent.
The Amorites held their ground at Har -- Heres and Shaalbim, but when the hand of the House ofJoseph grew heavier, they were subjected to forced labour. (35 Habitavitque Amorraeus in Hathares, in Aialon et Salebim; et aggravata est manus domus Ioseph, factusque est ei tributarius.
The territory of the Edomites begins at the Ascent of Scorpions, runs to the Rock and continues onupwards.)36 Fuit autem terminus Amorraei ab ascensu Acrabbim ad Petram et superiora loca.
