1 Now after Joshua's death, the Israelites consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Which of us is to march on theCanaanites first, to make war on them?'	1 - Dopo la morte di Giosuè i figliuoli d'Israele consultarono il Signore dicendo: «Chi salirà davanti a noi contro il Cananeo e sarà il duce della guerra?».
2 And Yahweh replied, 'Judah is to march on them first; I am delivering the country into his hands.'	2 Il Signore rispose: «Ascenderà Giuda; ecco io ho dato il paese nelle sue mani».
3 Judah then said to his brother Simeon, 'March with me into the territory al otted to me; we shall makewar on the Canaanites, and then I in my turn shal march into your territory with you.' And Simeon marched withhim.	3 Giuda allora disse a Simeone suo fratello: «Sali meco nel paese toccatomi in sorte e combatti contro il Cananeo, affinchè anch'io venga con te nella tua eredità». E Simeone se ne andò con lui.
4 So Judah marched on them, and Yahweh delivered the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, andthey defeated them at Bezek-ten thousand of them!	4 Salì adunque Giuda e il Signore diede nelle loro mani il Cananeo e il Ferezeo e uccisero in Bezec, diecimila uomini.
5 At Bezek they came upon Adoni-Bezek; they joined battle with him and defeated the Canaanites andPerizzites.	5 Trovato Adonibezec in Bezec, combatterono contro di lui e sconfissero il Cananeo e il Ferezeo.
6 Adoni-Bezek took to flight, but they chased and captured him and cut off his thumbs and big toes.	6 Adonibezec prese la fuga, ma essendo stato inseguito e preso, gli furono tagliate le estremità delle mani e dei piedi.
7 Adoni-Bezek said, 'Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to pick up the crumbsunder my table. As I did, God does to me.' He was taken to Jerusalem, and there he died.	7 Disse allora Adonibezec: «Settanta re con le estremità delle mani e dei piedi amputate raccoglievano sotto la mia mensa l'avanzo dei cibi come ho fatto, così mi venne reso da Dio». Venne poi condotto a Gerusalemme, dove morì.
8 (The sons of Judah attacked Jerusalem and took it: they put its people to the sword and set fire to thecity.)	8 Avendo poi i figli di Giuda assediato Gerusalemme, la presero, ne passarono a fil di spada gli abitanti e diedero fuoco a tutta la città.
9 After this the sons of Judah went down to make war on the Canaanites who were living in the highlands,the Negeb and the lowlands.	9 Quindi scesero a combattere contro il Cananeo, che abitava fra le montagne a mezzogiorno e nelle pianure
10 Judah next marched on the Canaanites living in Hebron -- the name of Hebron in olden days wasKiriath-Arba -- and beat Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai.	10 e movendo Giuda contro il Cananeo, che abitava in Ebron, il cui nome anticamente era Cariat Arbe, sconfisse Sesai, Aiman e Tolmai:
11 From there, he marched on the inhabitants of Debir -- the name of Debir in olden days was Kiriath-Sepher.	11 poi partito di là, se ne andò dagli abitanti di Dabir, chiamata in antico Cariat Sefer, cioè Città delle lettere.
12 Caleb said, 'To the man who conquers and captures Kiriath-Sepher, I shal give my daughter Achsahas wife.'	12 Caleb disse: «A colui che abbatterà Cariat Sefer e la devasterà darò in moglie la mia figlia Axa».
13 The man who captured it was Othniel son of Kenaz, younger brother of Caleb, who gave him hisdaughter Achsah as wife.	13 Avendo presa la città, Otoniele figliuolo di Cenez fratello minore di Caleb, gli diede in moglie la figlia Axa.
14 When she arrived, he urged her to ask her father for arable land, but when she alighted from thedonkey and Caleb asked her, 'What is the matter?'	14 Mentre facevano strada insieme il marito le consigliò di chiedere al padre un campo; essa perciò stando a sedere su un asino, si mise a sospirare e a Caleb che le aveva chiesto che cosa avesse,
15 she said to him, 'Grant me a blessing! As the land you have given me is the Negeb, give me springs ofwater, too!' So Caleb gave her what she wanted: the upper springs and the lower springs.	15 rispose: «Fammi un regalo: poichè mi hai dato un territorio asciutto, dammene anche uno irriguo». E Caleb le diede un campo irriguo superiore e un campo irriguo inferiore.
16 The sons of Hobab the Kenite, father-in-law of Moses, marched up with the sons of Judah from theCity of Palm Trees into the desert of Judah lying in the Negeb of Arad, where they went and settled among thepeople.	16 I figli del Cineo, parente di Mosè, ascesero dalla città delle palme coi figli di Giuda verso il deserto appartenente a costui e che sta a mezzogiorno di Arad, e abitarono insieme.
17 Judah then set out with his brother Simeon. They beat the Canaanites who lived in Zephath anddelivered it over to the curse of destruction; hence the town was given the name of Hormah.	17 Giuda poi se ne andò col fratello Simeone e insieme sconfissero il Cananeo che abitava in Sefaat e lo uccisero. Questa città venne chiamata Orma, cioè anatema.
18 Judah then captured Gaza and its territory, Ashkelon and its territory, Ekron and its territory.AndYahweh was with Judah, who made himself master of the highlands;	18 Prese ancora Giuda la città di Gaza col suo territorio e parimenti Ascalone e Accaron col loro territorio
19 he could not, however, dispossess the inhabitants of the plain, since they had iron chariots.	19 e il Signore fu con Giuda che possedette tutta la parte montuosa, ma non potè sterminare gli abitanti della pianura, perchè abbondavano di carri falcati.
20 As Moses had directed, Hebron was given to Caleb, and he drove the three sons of Anak out of it.	20 Ebron fu data a Caleb giusta la parola di Mosè, e Caleb vi sterminò i tre figli di Enac.
21 As regards the Jebusites living in Jerusalem, the sons of Benjamin did not dispossess them, and theJebusites have been living in Jerusalem with the sons of Benjamin ever since.	21 I figli di Beniamino invece non sterminarono il Jebuseo, abitante di Gerusalemme, e il Jebuseo continuò ad abitare in Gerusalemme coi figli di Beniamino fino a questo giorno.
22 Similarly, the House of Joseph marched on Bethel, and Yahweh was with them.	22 Anche la casa di Giuseppe ascese in Betel e il Signore fu con essi
23 The House of Joseph made a reconnaissance of Bethel. (In olden days, the name of the town wasLuz.)	23 perchè assediando la città, che prima si chiamava Luza,
24 The scouts saw a man coming out of the town and said to him, 'Show us how to get into the town andwe shal show you faithful love.'	24 videro un uomo uscire dalla città e avendogli detto: «Mostraci l'entrata della città e ti useremo misericordia»,
25 And when he had shown them a way into the town, they put the town to the sword but let the man andhis whole clan go.	25 egli la mostrò loro ed essi passarono la città a fil di spada lasciando in vita quell'uomo e la parentela di lui,
26 The man went off to the country of the Hittites and built a town which he called Luz; and that has been its name ever since.	26 il quale andatosene nella terra degli Hettim vi edificò una città che chiamò Luza, nome ch'essa porta anche oggi.
27 Manasseh did not dispossess Beth-Shean and its dependencies, nor Taanach and its dependencies,nor the inhabitants of Dor and its dependencies, nor the inhabitants of Ibleam and its dependencies, nor theinhabitants of Megiddo and its dependencies; in those parts the Canaanites held their ground.	27 Anche Manasse non sterminò Betsan e Tanac coi loro villaggi e neppure gli abitanti di Dor, di Jeblaam, e di Mageddo coi loro villaggi, ma il Cananeo prese ad abitare con essi;
28 But when the Israelites became stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labour, althoughthey did not dispossess them.	28 e quando Israele si fu consolidato li fece tributarii ma non li volle sterminare.
29 Nor did Ephraim dispossess the Canaanites living in Gezer; thus, the Canaanites went on living inGezer with him.	29 Neppur Efraim sterminò il Cananeo che abitava in Gazer ma abitò seco lui.
30 Zebulun did not dispossess the inhabitants of Kitron or of Nahalol. The Canaanites lived on withZebulun but were subjected to forced labour.	30 Zabulon non sterminò gli abitanti di Cetron e Naalol, ma il Cananeo abitò in mezzo a lui e gli divenne tributario.
31 Asher did not dispossess the inhabitants of Acco, nor those of Sidon, of Mahalab, of Achzib, of Helbah,of Aphek or of Rehob.	31 Anche Aser non sterminò gli abitanti di Acco, di Sidone, di Aalab, di Acazib, di Elba, di Afec e di Roob,
32 So the Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the country, not having dispossessed them.	32 ma abitò insieme coi Cananei che stavano in quella terra e non li uccise.
33 Naphtali did not dispossess the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh or of Beth-Anath; they settled among theCanaanite inhabitants of the country, but the inhabitants of Beth-Shemesh and of Beth-Anath were subjected toforced labour for them.	33 Anche Neftali non sterminò gli abitanti di Betsames e Betanat, ma abitò col Cananeo, che vi si trovava, e i Betsamiti e i Betaniti gli furono tributarii.
34 The Amorites drove the Danites back into the highlands and would not let them come down into theplain.	34 L'Amorreo spinse sulla montagna i figli di Dan nè li lasciò discendere nella pianura
35 The Amorites held their ground at Har -- Heres and Shaalbim, but when the hand of the House ofJoseph grew heavier, they were subjected to forced labour. (	35 ed egli abitò sul monte Ares, che significa argilloso, in Ajalon e in Salebim; ma la mano della casa di Giuseppe pesò sopra di essi e divennero poi tributarii.
36 The territory of the Edomites begins at the Ascent of Scorpions, runs to the Rock and continues onupwards.)	36 Il territorio degli Amorrei estendevasi dalla Salita dello Scorpione fino a Petra e al di sopra di essi.
