1 My dear friends, not every spirit is to be trusted, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God,for many false prophets are at large in the world.	1 Carissimi, non vogliate credere ad ogni spirito, ma private gli spiriti, se sono da Dio: conciossiaché molli falsi profeti sono usciti pel mondo.
2 This is the proof of the spirit of God: any spirit which acknowledges Jesus Christ, come in humannature, is from God,	2 Da questo si conosce lo spirito di Dio: qualunque spirito, che confessi, che Gesù Cristo è venuto nella carne, egli è da Dio:
3 and no spirit which fails to acknowledge Jesus is from God; it is the spirit of Antichrist, whose comingyou have heard of; he is already at large in the world.	3 Ma qualunque spirito, che divida Gesù, non è da Dio: e questi è un Anticristo, il quale avete udito, che viene, e già fin d'adesso è nel mondo.
4 Children, you are from God and have overcome them, because he who is in you is greater than he whois in the world.	4 Voi figliuolini, siete da Dio, e avete vinto colui, perché più potente è quegli, che è in voi, che colui, che sta nel mondo.
5 They are from the world, and therefore the world inspires what they say, and listens to them.	5 Eglino sono del mondo: per questo parlano cose del mondo, e il mondo gli ascolta.
6 We are from God; whoever recognises God listens to us; anyone who is not from God refuses to listento us. This is how we can distinguish the spirit of truth from the spirit of falsehood.	6 Noi siamo da Dio. Chi conosce Dio, ascolta noi: chi non è da Dio, non ci ascolta: con questo distinguiamo io spirito di verità dallo spirito di errore.
7 My dear friends, let us love one another, since love is from God and everyone who loves is a child ofGod and knows God.	7 Carissimi amiamoci l'un l'altro: perché la carità è da Dio. E chi ama, nato di Dio, e conosce Dio.
8 Whoever fails to love does not know God, because God is love.	8 Chi non ama, non ha conosciuto Dio: dappoiché Dio è carità.
9 This is the revelation of God's love for us, that God sent his only Son into the world that we might havelife through him.	9 Da questo si rendette manifesta la carità di Dio verso di noi, perché mandò Dio il suo Unigenito al mondo, affinché per lui abbiamo vita.
10 Love consists in this: it is not we who loved God, but God loved us and sent his Son to expiate oursins.	10 Qui sta la carità: che non come se noi avessimo amato Dio, ma che egli il primo ci abbia amati, e abbia mandato il Figliuolo suo propiziazione pe' nostri peccati.
11 My dear friends, if God loved us so much, we too should love one another.	11 Carissimi, se Dio ci ha amati in tal guisa: noi pure dobbiamo amarci l'un l'altro.
12 No one has ever seen God, but as long as we love one another God remains in us and his love comesto its perfection in us.	12 Nissnno ha mai veduto Dio. Se ci amiamo l'un l'altro, Dio abita in noi, e la carità di lui è in noi perfetta.
13 This is the proof that we remain in him and he in us, that he has given us a share in his Spirit.	13 Da questo conosciamo, che siamo ti lui, e che egli è in noi: perché egli ha dato a noi del suo Spirito.
14 We ourselves have seen and testify that the Father sent his Son as Saviour of the world.	14 E noi abbiamo veduto, ed attestiamo, che il Padre ha mandato il suo Figliuolo Salvatore del mondo.
15 Anyone who acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God remains in him and he in God.	15 Chiunque confesserà, che Gesù è Figliuolo di Dio, Dio abita in lui, ed egli in Dio.
16 We have recognised for ourselves, and put our faith in, the love God has for us. God is love, andwhoever remains in love remains in God and God in him.	16 E noi abbiam conosciuto, e creduto alla carità, che Dio ha per noi. Dio è carità: e chi sta nella carità, sta in Dio, e Dio in lui.
17 Love comes to its perfection in us when we can face the Day of Judgement fearlessly, because evenin this world we have become as he is.	17 In questo è perfetta la carità di Dio in noi, se abbiamo fiducia pel di del giudizio: perché quale egli è, tali siam noi in questo mondo.
18 In love there is no room for fear, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear implies punishment andno one who is afraid has come to perfection in love.	18 Il timore non istà colla carità: ma la carità perfetta manda via il timore, perché il timore ha tormento: e chi teme, non è perfetto nella carità.
19 Let us love, then, because he first loved us.	19 Noi adunque amiam Dio, dappoi ché egli il primo ci ha amati.
20 Anyone who says 'I love God' and hates his brother, is a liar, since whoever does not love the brotherwhom he can see cannot love God whom he has not seen.	20 Se uno dirà: io amo Dio; e odierà il suo fratello, egli è bugiardo. Imperocché chi non ama il suo fratello, che vede, come può amare Dio, cui egli non vede?
21 Indeed this is the commandment we have received from him, that whoever loves God, must also lovehis brother.	21 E questo comandamento ci è stato dato da Dio: che chi ama Dio, ami anche il proprio fratello.
