NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith as precious as ourown, given through the saving justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.1 Simon Petrus, servus et apostolus Jesu Christi, iis qui coæqualem nobiscum sortiti sunt fidem in justitia Dei nostri, et Salvatoris Jesu Christi.
Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of our Lord.2 Gratia vobis, et pax adimpleatur in cognitione Dei, et Christi Jesu Domini nostri :
By his divine power, he has lavished on us all the things we need for life and for true devotion, throughthe knowledge of him who has called us by his own glory and goodness.3 Quomodo omnia nobis divinæ virtutis suæ, quæ ad vitam et pietatem donata sunt, per cognitionem ejus, qui vocavit nos propria gloria, et virtute,
Through these, the greatest and priceless promises have been lavished on us, that through them youshould share the divine nature and escape the corruption rife in the world through disordered passion.4 per quem maxima, et pretiosa nobis promissa donavit : ut per hæc efficiamini divinæ consortes naturæ : fugientes ejus, quæ in mundo est, concupiscentiæ corruptionem.
With this in view, do your utmost to support your faith with goodness, goodness with understanding,5 Vos autem curam omnem subinferentes, ministrate in fide vestra virtutem, in virtute autem scientiam,
understanding with self-control, self-control with perseverance, perseverance with devotion,6 in scientia autem abstinentiam, in abstinentia autem patientiam, in patientia autem pietatem,
devotion with kindness to the brothers, and kindness to the brothers with love.7 in pietate autem amorem fraternitatis, in amore autem fraternitatis caritatem.
The possession and growth of these qualities wil prevent your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ frombeing ineffectual or unproductive.8 Hæc enim si vobiscum adsint, et superent, non vacuos nec sine fructu vos constituent in Domini nostri Jesu Christi cognitione.
But without them, a person is blind or short-sighted, forgetting how the sins of the past were washedaway.9 Cui enim non præsto sunt hæc, cæcus est, et manu tentans, oblivionem accipiens purgationis veterum suorum delictorum.
Instead of this, brothers, never allow your choice or cal ing to waver; then there wil be no danger ofyour stumbling,10 Quapropter fratres, magis satagite ut per bona opera certam vestram vocationem, et electionem faciatis : hæc enim facientes, non peccabitis aliquando.
for in this way you wil be given the generous gift of entry to the eternal kingdom of our Lord andSaviour Jesus Christ.11 Sic enim abundanter ministrabitur vobis introitus in æternum regnum Domini nostri et Salvatoris Jesu Christi.
That is why I wil always go on recal ing the same truths to you, even though you already know themand are firmly fixed in these truths.12 Propter quod incipiam vos semper commonere de his : et quidem scientes et confirmatos vos in præsenti veritate.
I am sure it is my duty, as long as I am in this tent, to keep stirring you up with reminders,13 Justum autem arbitror quamdiu sum in hoc tabernaculo, suscitare vos in commonitione :
since I know the time for me to lay aside this tent is coming soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clearto me.14 certus quod velox est depositio tabernaculi mei secundum quod et Dominus noster Jesus Christus significavit mihi.
And I shal take great care that after my own departure you will stil have a means to recal thesethings to mind.15 Dabo autem operam et frequenter habere vos post obitum meum, ut horum memoriam faciatis.
When we told you about the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not slavishlyrepeating cleverly invented myths; no, we had seen his majesty with our own eyes.16 Non enim doctas fabulas secuti notam fecimus vobis Domini nostri Jesu Christi virtutem et præsentiam : sed speculatores facti illius magnitudinis.
He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when a voice came to him from the transcendentGlory, This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.17 Accipiens enim a Deo Patre honorem et gloriam, voce delapsa ad eum hujuscemodi a magnifica gloria : Hic est Filius meus dilectus, in quo mihi complacui, ipsum audite.
We ourselves heard this voice from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.18 Et hanc vocem nos audivimus de cælo allatam, cum essemus cum ipso in monte sancto.
So we have confirmation of the words of the prophets; and you wil be right to pay attention to it as to a lamp for lighting a way through the dark, until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds.19 Et habemus firmiorem propheticum sermonem : cui benefacitis attendentes quasi lucernæ lucenti in caliginoso loco donec dies elucescat, et lucifer oriatur in cordibus vestris :
At the same time, we must recognise that the interpretation of scriptural prophecy is never a matter forthe individual.20 hoc primum intelligentes quod omnis prophetia Scripturæ propria interpretatione non fit.
For no prophecy ever came from human initiative. When people spoke for God it was the Holy Spiritthat moved them.21 Non enim voluntate humana allata est aliquando prophetia : sed Spiritu Sancto inspirati, locuti sunt sancti Dei homines.
