1 Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith as precious as ourown, given through the saving justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.	1 Simon Pietro, servo, e Apostolo di Gesù Cristo, a quegli, i quali pari alla nostra hanno avuto in sorte la fede con la giustizia del nostro Dio, e salvator Gesù Cristo.
2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of our Lord.	2 Sia a voi moltiplicata la grazia, e la pace mediante la cognizione di Dio, e di Gesù Cristo Signor nostro:
3 By his divine power, he has lavished on us all the things we need for life and for true devotion, throughthe knowledge of him who has called us by his own glory and goodness.	3 Come avendoci la divina potenza di lui donate tutte quelle cose, che fanno alla vita, e alla pietà, per mezzo della cognizione di lui, il qual ci chiamò per la sua gloria, e virtù,
4 Through these, the greatest and priceless promises have been lavished on us, that through them youshould share the divine nature and escape the corruption rife in the world through disordered passion.	4 Per mezzo del quale feco a noi dono di grandissime, e preziose promesse: affinchè per queste diventaste partecipi della divina natura: fuggendo la corruzione, che è nel mondo per la concupiscenza.
5 With this in view, do your utmost to support your faith with goodness, goodness with understanding,	5 Or voi con ogni sollecitudine adoperandovi, alla vostra fede unite la virtù, alla virtù la scienza,
6 understanding with self-control, self-control with perseverance, perseverance with devotion,	6 Alla scienza poi la temperanza, alla temperanza la pazienza, alla pazienza la pietà,
7 devotion with kindness to the brothers, and kindness to the brothers with love.	7 Alla pietà l'amore fraterno, all'amore fraterno la carità.
8 The possession and growth of these qualities wil prevent your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ frombeing ineffectual or unproductive.	8 Imperocché ove queste cose siano con voi, e vadano augumentandosi, non lascieranno vuoto, e infruttifero in voi il conoscimento del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo.
9 But without them, a person is blind or short-sighted, forgetting how the sins of the past were washedaway.	9 Imperocché chi tali cose non ha, egli è cieco, e va a tastoni, e si dimentica di essere stato mondato da' suoi antichi peccati.
10 Instead of this, brothers, never allow your choice or cal ing to waver; then there wil be no danger ofyour stumbling,	10 Per la qual cosa, o fratelli, vie più studiatevi di certa rendere la vocazione, ed elezione vostra per mezzo delle buone opere: imperocché così facendo, non peccherete giammai.
11 for in this way you wil be given the generous gift of entry to the eternal kingdom of our Lord andSaviour Jesus Christ.	11 Imperocché così saravvi dato ampio l'ingresso nel regno eterno del Signor nostro, e Salvator Gesù Cristo.
12 That is why I wil always go on recal ing the same truths to you, even though you already know themand are firmly fixed in these truths.	12 Per la qual cosa non trascurerò di ammonirvi intorno a tali cose; benché istruiti, e confermati nella presente verità.
13 I am sure it is my duty, as long as I am in this tent, to keep stirring you up with reminders,	13 Ma io credo ben fatto, che sino a tanto ch'io sono in questo tabernacolo, vi risvegli con le ammonizioni:
14 since I know the time for me to lay aside this tent is coming soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clearto me.	14 Essend'io sicuro, che ben presto deporrò il mio tabernacolo, secondo quello, che l'istesso Signor nostro Gesù Cristo ha a me fatto intendere.
15 And I shal take great care that after my own departure you will stil have a means to recal thesethings to mind.	15 Ma farò sì, che ancor dopo la mia morte abbiate voi onde far sovente commemorazione di tali cose.
16 When we told you about the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not slavishlyrepeating cleverly invented myths; no, we had seen his majesty with our own eyes.	16 Imperocché non per aver noi dato retta ad argute favole, vi abbiamo esposta la virtù, e la venuta del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo: ma per essere stati spettatori della grandezza di lui.
17 He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when a voice came to him from the transcendentGlory, This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.	17 Imperocché ricevette egli onore, e gloria da Dio Padre, essendo discesa a lui dalla maestosa gloria quella voce: questo è il mio Figliuolo diletto, in cui mi son compiacciuto, ascoltatelo.
18 We ourselves heard this voice from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.	18 E questa voce procedente dal cielo la udimmo noi, mentre eravamo con lui sul monte santo.
19 So we have confirmation of the words of the prophets; and you wil be right to pay attention to it as to a lamp for lighting a way through the dark, until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds.	19 Ma abbiamo più fermo il parlar de' profeti, a cui ben fate in prestan dovi attenzione come ad una lucerna, la quale in luogo oscuro risplenda, sino a tanto che spunti il giorno, e la stella del mattino nasca ne' vostri cuori:
20 At the same time, we must recognise that the interpretation of scriptural prophecy is never a matter forthe individual.	20 Ponendo mente principalmente a questo, che nissuna profezia della scrittura è di privata interpretazione.
21 For no prophecy ever came from human initiative. When people spoke for God it was the Holy Spiritthat moved them.	21 Imperocché non per umano volere fu portato una volta la profezia: ma ispirati dallo Spirito santo, parlarono i santi uomini di Dio.
