1 Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith as precious as ourown, given through the saving justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.	1 Simon Pietro, servo ed apostolo di Gesù Cristo, a quelli che hanno avuta in sorte una fede pari alla nostra colla giustizia del nostro Dio e Salvatore Gesù Cristo.
2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of our Lord.	2 La grazia e la pace vi sian moltiplicate mediante la cognizione di Dio e di Cristo Gesù Signore nostro.
3 By his divine power, he has lavished on us all the things we need for life and for true devotion, throughthe knowledge of him who has called us by his own glory and goodness.	3 Poichè la divina potenza di Cristo ci ha donato tutto ciò che riguarda la vita e la pietà, facendoci conoscere Colui che ci ha chiamati per la sua gloria e virtù,
4 Through these, the greatest and priceless promises have been lavished on us, that through them youshould share the divine nature and escape the corruption rife in the world through disordered passion.	4 per mezzo del quale ci ha date dgrandissime e preziose promesse, per farvi, mediante queste, partecipi della divina natura, fuggendo la corruzione della concutpiscenza che è nel mondo.
5 With this in view, do your utmost to support your faith with goodness, goodness with understanding,	5 Voi fate ogni sforzo per unire alla fede alla virtù, alla virtù la scienza,
6 understanding with self-control, self-control with perseverance, perseverance with devotion,	6 alla scienza la temperanza, alla temperanza la pazienza, alla pazienza la pietà,
7 devotion with kindness to the brothers, and kindness to the brothers with love.	7 alla pietà l'amore fraterno, all'amore fraterno la carità;
8 The possession and growth of these qualities wil prevent your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ frombeing ineffectual or unproductive.	8 perchè se queste cose sono in voi e crescono non vi lasceran vuoti nè senza frutto nel conoscimento del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo.
9 But without them, a person is blind or short-sighted, forgetting how the sins of the past were washedaway.	9 Ma chi non ha tali cose è cieco, e va a tastoni, e si dimentica d'essere stato purificato dai suoi antichi peccati.
10 Instead of this, brothers, never allow your choice or cal ing to waver; then there wil be no danger ofyour stumbling,	10 Per questo, o fratelli, studiatevi semppre più di rendere sicura per mezzo delle opere la vostra vocazioane ed elezione; perchè facendo questo, non peccherete giammai,
11 for in this way you wil be given the generous gift of entry to the eternal kingdom of our Lord andSaviour Jesus Christ.	11 e cosi vi sarà largamente assicurato l'ingresso nell'eterno regno del Signore nostro e Salvatore Gesù Cristo.
12 That is why I wil always go on recal ing the same truths to you, even though you already know themand are firmly fixed in these truths.	12 Ecco perchè non trascurerò mai di ricordarvi queste cose, benché istruiti e confermati nella presente verità,
13 I am sure it is my duty, as long as I am in this tent, to keep stirring you up with reminders,	13 e credo mio dovere, finché sono sotto questa tenda, di tenervi svegli coi miei avvertimenti,
14 since I know the time for me to lay aside this tent is coming soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clearto me.	14 essendo ormai sicuro che ben presto lascerò questa mia tenda, secondo quanto mi ha fatto intendere lo stesso Signor nostro Gesù Cristo,
15 And I shal take great care that after my own departure you will stil have a means to recal thesethings to mind.	15 ma vo' fare in modo che voi, anche dopo la mia morte, vi ricordiate spesso di queste cose.
16 When we told you about the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not slavishlyrepeating cleverly invented myths; no, we had seen his majesty with our own eyes.	16 Or noi, non per essere andati dietro a ingegnose favole vi abbiamo esposta la virtù e la venuta del Signore nostro Gesù Cristo; ma per essere stati spettatori della sua maestà.
17 He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when a voice came to him from the transcendentGlory, This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.	17 Infatti Egli ricevette da Dio Padre onore e gloria, quando dalla gloria maestosa scese a lui quella voce: Questo è il mio Figliolo diletto nel quale mi son compiaciuto, ascoltatelo.
18 We ourselves heard this voice from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.	18 E questa voce, che veniva dal cielo, l'abbiamo sentita noi mentre eravamo con lui sul monte santo.
19 So we have confirmation of the words of the prophets; and you wil be right to pay attention to it as to a lamp for lighting a way through the dark, until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds.	19 E abbiamo una parola ancor più sicura, quella dei profeti, alla quale fate bene a prestare attenzione, come a lucerna che splenda in luogo oscuro, finché non spunti il giorno e non sorga nei vostri cuori la stella del mattino.
20 At the same time, we must recognise that the interpretation of scriptural prophecy is never a matter forthe individual.	20 Però notate, prima di tutto, che nessuna profezia della Scrittura è di privata interpretazione;
21 For no prophecy ever came from human initiative. When people spoke for God it was the Holy Spiritthat moved them.	21 perchè non furono pronunziate per umano volere le profezie, ma ispirati dallo Spirito Santo parlavano i santi uomini di Dio.
