NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith as precious as ourown, given through the saving justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.1 Simon Petrus servus et apo stolus Iesu Christi his, qui coae qualem nobis sortiti sunt fidem in iustitia Dei nostri et salvatoris Iesu Christi:
Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of our Lord.2 gratia vobis et pax multiplicetur in cognitione Dei et Iesu Domini nostri.
By his divine power, he has lavished on us all the things we need for life and for true devotion, throughthe knowledge of him who has called us by his own glory and goodness.3 Quomodo omnia nobis divinae virtutis suae ad vitam et pietatem donatae per cognitionem eius, qui vocavit nos propria gloria et virtute,
Through these, the greatest and priceless promises have been lavished on us, that through them youshould share the divine nature and escape the corruption rife in the world through disordered passion.4 per quae pretiosa et maxima nobis promissa donata sunt, ut per haec efficiamini divinae consortes naturae, fugientes eam, quae in mundo est in concupiscentia, corruptionem;
With this in view, do your utmost to support your faith with goodness, goodness with understanding,5 et propter hoc ipsum curam omnem subinferentes ministrate in fide vestra virtutem, in virtute autem scientiam,
understanding with self-control, self-control with perseverance, perseverance with devotion,6 in scientia autem continentiam, in continentia autem patientiam, in patientia autem pietatem,
devotion with kindness to the brothers, and kindness to the brothers with love.7 in pietate autem amorem fraternitatis, in amore autem fraternitatis caritatem.
The possession and growth of these qualities wil prevent your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ frombeing ineffectual or unproductive.8 Haec enim vobis, cum adsint et abundent, non vacuos nec sine fructu vos constituunt in Domini nostri Iesu Christi cognitionem;
But without them, a person is blind or short-sighted, forgetting how the sins of the past were washedaway.9 cui enim non praesto sunt haec, caecus est et nihil procul cernens, oblivionem accipiens purgationis veterum suorum delictorum.
Instead of this, brothers, never allow your choice or cal ing to waver; then there wil be no danger ofyour stumbling,10 Quapropter, fratres, magis satagite, ut firmam vestram vocationem et electionem faciatis. Haec enim facientes non offendetis aliquando;
for in this way you wil be given the generous gift of entry to the eternal kingdom of our Lord andSaviour Jesus Christ.11 sic enim abundanter ministrabitur vobis introitus in aeternum regnum Domini nostri et salvatoris Iesu Christi.
That is why I wil always go on recal ing the same truths to you, even though you already know themand are firmly fixed in these truths.12 Propter quod incipiam vos semper commonere de his, et quidem scientes et confirmatos in praesenti veritate.
I am sure it is my duty, as long as I am in this tent, to keep stirring you up with reminders,13 Iustum autem arbitror, quamdiu sum in hoc tabernaculo, suscitare vos in commonitione,
since I know the time for me to lay aside this tent is coming soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clearto me.14 certus quod velox est depositio tabernaculi mei, secundum quod et Dominus noster Iesus Christus significavit mihi;
And I shal take great care that after my own departure you will stil have a means to recal thesethings to mind.15 dabo autem operam et frequenter habere vos post obitum meum, ut horum memoriam faciatis.
When we told you about the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not slavishlyrepeating cleverly invented myths; no, we had seen his majesty with our own eyes.16 Non enim captiosas fabulas secuti notam fecimus vobis Domini nostri Iesu Christi virtutem et adventum, sed speculatores facti illius magnitudinis.
He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when a voice came to him from the transcendentGlory, This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.17 Accipiens enim a Deo Patre honorem et gloriam, voce prolata ad eum huiuscemodi a magnifica gloria: “ Filius meus, dilectus meus hic est, in quo ego mihi complacui ”;
We ourselves heard this voice from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.18 et hanc vocem nos audivimus de caelo prolatam, cum essemus cum ipso in monte sancto.
So we have confirmation of the words of the prophets; and you wil be right to pay attention to it as to a lamp for lighting a way through the dark, until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds.19 Et habemus firmiorem propheticum sermonem, cui bene facitis attendentes quasi lucernae lucenti in caliginoso loco, donec dies illucescat, et lucifer oriatur in cordibus vestris,
At the same time, we must recognise that the interpretation of scriptural prophecy is never a matter forthe individual.20 hoc primum intellegentes quod omnis prophetia Scripturae propria interpretatione non fit;
For no prophecy ever came from human initiative. When people spoke for God it was the Holy Spiritthat moved them.21 non enim voluntate humana prolata est prophetia aliquando, sed a Spiritu Sancto ducti locuti sunt a Deo homines.
