1 Simon Peter, servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith as precious as ourown, given through the saving justice of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ.	1 - Simon Pietro, servo e apostolo di Gesù Cristo, a coloro che nella giustizia del nostro Dio e Salvatore Gesù Cristo hanno ottenuto una fede pari alla nostra:
2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of our Lord.	2 grazia e pace vi siano accresciute mediante la cognizione di Dio e di Gesù Cristo Signor nostro.
3 By his divine power, he has lavished on us all the things we need for life and for true devotion, throughthe knowledge of him who has called us by his own glory and goodness.	3 Poichè la divina potenza di Lui ci ha donato tutto quello che riguarda la vita e la pietà, facendoci conoscere Colui che ci ha chiamati con la propria gloria e virtù,
4 Through these, the greatest and priceless promises have been lavished on us, that through them youshould share the divine nature and escape the corruption rife in the world through disordered passion.	4 donando a noi grandissime e preziose promesse, affinchè per mezzo di queste diventiate partecipi della natura divina; fuggendo la corruzione, che è nel mondo [e che proviene] dalla concupiscenza.
5 With this in view, do your utmost to support your faith with goodness, goodness with understanding,	5 Ora voi, adoperandovi con ogni sforzo, unite alla fede vostra la virtù, alla virtù la scienza,
6 understanding with self-control, self-control with perseverance, perseverance with devotion,	6 alla scienza la temperanza, alla temperanza la pazienza, alla pazienza la pietà,
7 devotion with kindness to the brothers, and kindness to the brothers with love.	7 alla pietà l'amor fraterno e all'amor fraterno la carità.
8 The possession and growth of these qualities wil prevent your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ frombeing ineffectual or unproductive.	8 Poichè se queste [virtù] si trovano in voi e aumentano, esse non vi lasceranno vuoti e sterili nella conoscenza del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo.
9 But without them, a person is blind or short-sighted, forgetting how the sins of the past were washedaway.	9 Invece chi non ha tali [virtù] è cieco e va a tastoni, e si dimentica di essere stato mondato dai suoi antichi peccati.
10 Instead of this, brothers, never allow your choice or cal ing to waver; then there wil be no danger ofyour stumbling,	10 Perciò, fratelli miei, studiatevi sempre più di rendere certa la vostra vocazione ed elezione per mezzo delle buone opere; perchè così facendo, non peccherete giammai.
11 for in this way you wil be given the generous gift of entry to the eternal kingdom of our Lord andSaviour Jesus Christ.	11 Così infatti vi sarà largamente assicurato l'ingresso nel regno eterno del nostro Signore e Salvatore Gesù Cristo.
12 That is why I wil always go on recal ing the same truths to you, even though you already know themand are firmly fixed in these truths.	12 Per la qual cosa io avrò cura di ricordarvi sempre queste cose: benchè le conosciate e siate confermati nella presente verità.
13 I am sure it is my duty, as long as I am in this tent, to keep stirring you up with reminders,	13 Ora io ritengo giusto che, fin che vivo in questo tabernacolo, vi debba risvegliare con le ammonizioni;
14 since I know the time for me to lay aside this tent is coming soon, as our Lord Jesus Christ made clearto me.	14 certo come sono che ben presto deporrò il mio tabernacolo, secondo quello che mi ha dato a conoscere il Signor nostro Gesù Cristo.
15 And I shal take great care that after my own departure you will stil have a means to recal thesethings to mind.	15 Ma io farò in modo che ancor dopo la mia morte voi abbiate a far sovente commemorazione di queste cose.
16 When we told you about the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, we were not slavishlyrepeating cleverly invented myths; no, we had seen his majesty with our own eyes.	16 Poichè non col dar retta ad argute favole, vi abbiamo esposta la virtù e la venuta del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo; ma per essere stati spettatori della grandezza di Lui.
17 He was honoured and glorified by God the Father, when a voice came to him from the transcendentGlory, This is my Son, the Beloved; he enjoys my favour.	17 Egli infatti ebbe da Dio Padre onore e gloria, quando dalla maestosa gloria discese su di Lui quella voce: «Questo è il Figliuol mio diletto, nel qual mi sono compiaciuto: ascoltatelo!».
18 We ourselves heard this voice from heaven, when we were with him on the holy mountain.	18 E questa voce che veniva dal cielo, l'udimmo noi, mentre eravamo con Lui sul monte santo.
19 So we have confirmation of the words of the prophets; and you wil be right to pay attention to it as to a lamp for lighting a way through the dark, until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds.	19 Inoltre abbiamo la parola più ferma profetica, alla quale fate bene a prestare attenzione come ad una lucerna che risplenda in luogo oscuro, fino a che non spunti il giorno e la stella del mattino non sorga nei vostri cuori.
20 At the same time, we must recognise that the interpretation of scriptural prophecy is never a matter forthe individual.	20 E bisogna por mente prima di tutto a questo, che nessuna profezia della Scrittura si fa per privata interpretazione.
21 For no prophecy ever came from human initiative. When people spoke for God it was the Holy Spiritthat moved them.	21 Perchè la profezia non venne pronunciata una volta per umano volere; ma ispirati dallo Spirito Santo hanno parlato i santi uomini di Dio.
