I urge the elders among you, as a fellow-elder myself and a witness to the sufferings of Christ, and asone who is to have a share in the glory that is to be revealed:1 Therefore, I beg the elders who are among you, as one who is also an elder and a witness of the Passion of Christ, who also shares in that glory which is to be revealed in the future:
give a shepherd's care to the flock of God that is entrusted to you: watch over it, not simply as a dutybut gladly, as God wants; not for sordid money, but because you are eager to do it.2 pasture the flock of God that is among you, providing for it, not as a requirement, but willingly, in accord with God, and not for the sake of tainted profit, but freely,
Do not lord it over the group which is in your charge, but be an example for the flock.3 not so as to dominate by means of the clerical state, but so as to be formed into a flock from the heart.
When the chief shepherd appears, you wil be given the unfading crown of glory.4 And when the Leader of pastors will have appeared, you shall secure an unfading crown of glory.
In the same way, younger people, be subject to the elders. Humility towards one another must be thegarment you all wear constantly, because God opposes the proud but accords his favour to the humble.5 Similarly, young persons, be subject to the elders. And infuse all humility among one another, for God resists the arrogant, but to the humble he gives grace.
Bow down, then, before the power of God now, so that he may raise you up in due time;6 And so, be humbled under the powerful hand of God, so that he may exalt you in the time of visitation.
unload al your burden on to him, since he is concerned about you.7 Cast all your cares upon him, for he takes care of you.
Keep sober and alert, because your enemy the devil is on the prowl like a roaring lion, looking forsomeone to devour.8 Be sober and vigilant. For your adversary, the devil, is like a roaring lion, traveling around and seeking those whom he might devour.
Stand up to him, strong in faith and in the knowledge that it is the same kind of suffering that thecommunity of your brothers throughout the world is undergoing.9 Resist him by being strong in faith, being aware that the same passions afflict those who are your brothers in the world.
You wil have to suffer only for a little while: the God of all grace who called you to eternal glory inChrist wil restore you, he wil confirm, strengthen and support you.10 But the God of all grace, who has called us to his eternal glory in Christ Jesus, will himself perfect, confirm, and establish us, after a brief time of suffering.
His power lasts for ever and ever. Amen.11 To him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
I write these few words to you through Silvanus, who is a trustworthy brother, to encourage you andattest that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it!12 I have written briefly, through Sylvanus, whom I consider to be a faithful brother to you, begging and testifying that this is the true grace of God, in which you have been established.
Your sister in Babylon, who is with you among the chosen, sends you greetings; so does my son,Mark.13 The Church which is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you, as does my son, Mark.
Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you al who are in Christ.14 Greet one another with a holy kiss. Grace be to all of you who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
